126. Blacking my narrowboat and welding on new anodes, at Yelvertoft Marina

This vlog picks up immediately where the last one left off, as I head from Hillmorton Wharf to Yelvertoft marina where I had the boat taken out of the water and into their shiny new boat shed for blacking.
I let New Gary jetwash the boat clean but did the blacking myself, a coat each day for three days, after first scraping any loose crud off and applying a rust treatment to the waterline. The blacking used was International Intertuf 16.
After that, New Gary welded on some fresh anodes including flat ones on the centre of the boat sides.

The welder uses his chipping hammer not to test the weld but to remove the slag formed by the flux around the weld.

Is it more common to moor on the port side? On the starboard side? Or equally on both sides?

Gotta say yours was one of the best vlogs on canal boats, much appreciated by many 👍, time you bought a new 60ft cruiser stern me thinks, ive got mine booked into Tooleys Yard at the end of June for blacking, anodes and rudder welding (bolts are worn)

Hi. Should you disconnect your inverter before arc welding anodes? I just had my boat blacked an new anodes fitted, but my inverter has gone faulty.

Actually, new Gary was tapping with the welding hammer to knock off the bits of flux that wrap the welding rod. This prevents oxygen from getting to the welded material which would be very bad for the weld. Been there done that.

In section 1.09, the name of the boat is Finnish, susi, in English it means wolf.

I realize this video is 4 years old and you've sold your boat and moved into a proper residence. But I wanted to tell you that new Gary was tapping the welds with a chipping hammer because he "stick welded" the new anodes on. Stick welding leaves a crust which must be chipped off so that you could apply a proper blacking to the area. F.Y.I.

Maybe a dumb question but why not do the anodes before you re-coat the hull?

Sad looking anodes is a very good thing…it means they are doing their job and while they look it bad condition, the underwater metal is in good condition.
