Great video. I'm planning on doing 2 zones with a total of approx. 30m in length, my supplier sent me a few options for LEDs . WS2811 / 5v WS2815 /12v WS2811 / 24v Can't wait to see more of your tests, narrow down my choices.

Just FYI, with the WS2811 you're only getting every 6 addressable at 24V, so a run of 600LEDs will only have 100 addressable zones.

Awesome! It will be fun to see what you end up going with! As G B mentioned the ws2811 as far as i'm aware are not individually addressable unless thee is something out there that I'm not aware of.

I’m following this tutorial pretty closely along with the how to solder video , and installing wled video but my esp32 board pin layout looks a little different. I don’t see a pin named d4 and the ground pin is in a different spot. Is there a different pin to use ? Is it just the output gpio4? Thanks !

I finally got this working thank you so much for a great video! I had so much pain as ESP32 boards come in different varieties, but i worked out that simply changing the GPIO pin within WLED done the trick! Just an additional question but when you are displaying what appears to be two sets of LED strips, are these connected to the same controller and in series? Now i have this first stage working with 2 LED strips in parallel, my next stage is to extend to 30m around garden for new year light show! Trying to work out if i'm best having separate controllers or just connect the full 30m with any additional voltage...Not sure if anyone can advise on how i progress from here?

Chris, thanks for the great videos. It has really helped me understand the differences between all the available LED light options. I'm going to have a go at putting together a project for a night club using 130 meters of WS2815 on four separate circuits. I'm curious if you've done any side by side comparisons of the available controller units from BTF Lighting. I really like the results you're getting with WLED with the ESP32 project boards, but by the time I make these commercially usable and put them in project boxes, it's going to be more trouble than buying the off the shelf controller complete with their remote controls.

Thanks so much for watching and wow what an epic project you are taking on! I really wish I had more experience with larger installs and other controllers. My guess is for something that big you would want to go with something else. Here is some information on what WLED recomends from an led perspective: kno.wled.ge/features/multi-strip/#:~:text=For%20good%20performance%2C%20you%20can,a%20total%20of%204000%20LEDs. Hopefully at some point down the road I will be more knowledgeable and can help out better with questions like this. But I would love to know what you end up going with if you have time to share down the road!

@ChrisMaherDIY - What LED settings are set in WLED for the WS2815? I see some kind of limiter and its defaulted to 5v 55ma or something? What is the proper setup for these? How do you calculate the right power supply given lets say 3.5 strips used of these (1051 LED's in my case)?

On the esp32 are you just plugging the +5v into the 5v pin and the gnd to the gnd pin. The same as you would when you would power it via the USB port and the +5v pin and gnd pin would be then connected to the LED strip? I only ask as I tried a 12v power supply using your directions, and it worked for a bit but then the esp32 overheated and the wifi module no longer works. So made me wonder if the pins on the esp32 are connected differently in this configuration.

Hi Chris I’ve followed this video to the letter yet yet I do not get the same results. When I plug LED strip in to power supply the full reel illuminates. When I introduce ESP32 with WLED the strip behaves erratically. I’ve tried using the voltage adapter to power the ESP and also separate supply, both yield the same result. I’ve seen reference in the web to Logic Level Shifters but never heard/saw you use one in your projects. Could this be the answer?

Good afternoon, congratulations for your videos, they are fabulous. I have a doubt and if you can clarify I would be grateful. I need to put WRGB leds in a case letter (channel letters). I was thinking of using the ESP32. Once configured and programmed, the ESP32 can work Offline to make a certain sequence of colors and effects, it turns on (ON with a switch ) and the ESP32 starts working and carrying out the predefined routine itself. Or is there another better controller for this situation. Thanks

Quick question. Did you use power injection on the other end? Or is the full 10m run just one power source with unnoticable diminish to brightness? I was considering getting a nice big 12 v 15A 180W PSU for my project using 15m of ws2811 but now I am having second thoughts.... Additionally, I am curious to know of it is possible to connect the data wire (green)to 2 led strips and have the same data sent through them I was thinking 5m and 10m( with power injection ) since the big power supply has 3 pairs of +v -v I can use. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
@ChrisMaherDIY

Thanks so much for watching and great questions! I did not use power injection on this setup. Just had the power going in at the beging of the first led strip and that's all. If I remember correctly, at 100% brightness and white, I did notice a drop off in color but on every animation or just regular color, it looked great. I also think If I had the brightness set to about 70% and white, I did not notice any drop off in color at that point. And yes you can certainly run the data wire to 2 strips and have them do the same thing. This is called running them in parallels. You can simply split the data line coming from the controller (I love using wago connectors to split the data) and then run the data to whatever strips you have and it should work great!

Thanks for watching and great question! So my understanding is that these along with most addressable lights need the data to be connected before they do anything. Led strips that are the basic ones that dont really have data going into it will fire up with power and nothing else but these (at least in my experience) need the data connected as well. Without the data, the lights don't know what to do when plugged in and just stay off. I hope that makes sense!

@@ChrisMaherDIY I don't see how they could make 24V strips with individually addressable LEDs. The LEDs are 3V each, so for 24V, six are wired in series, leaving 3V dropped across the resistor, or linear current regulator. Great video, Chris! I have a question regarding your 12V/5A = 60W power supply recommendation. According to the specifications, a 5M WS2815 LED Strip will take 90W to power (probably at full white with no degradation). If we consider 20% higher (90W *1.2), it will be 108W. Does this theoretically mean we should be using a minimum of a 120W power supply? That is twice as much as what you're recommending. Am I understanding this correctly?
@mattwilson9293

I just installed exactly 5m of this WS2815 strip (144 LED/m) around my walk in shower. Yes, it's a rather big shower. Using WLED to limit power to 2.5amps, this is more than adequate for powering 5 meters. Remember, this is with me using 144led/m strips. Any higher than 4 amps and it becomes offensively bright on all colors, especially white. You dont NEED a 12v10a power supply, but it won't necessarily hurt anything as long as you don't let it try to pump 10amps all the time.

I have read that the 3.3V data signal would not be enough for the WS2815 strip to take it in, and that i need another shift level convertor to bring the data to 5V again. Thanks again buddy! In case you didn't see my reply on your comment on the other video: Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Sounds like an epic project! I have yet to do an install that large so I'm not 100% sure what would be best but here is what I would probably start out with and see how it looks. Depending on the setup of the room I would probably do 2 power supplies (hopefully keep the length of injection wires down a little bit) If you are wanting to have them running on white and full brightness, you would probably need a power injection every 5 meters. If you don't necessarily need them at full brightness and full white, you could probably do just fine with an injection every 10 meters. If you use sk6812 leds, they have a separate white channel and I think on those you could do a power injection at every 10m and be good You could probably get away with using just 1 esp32 device but here are some more of the recommended lengths from the WLED info page: kno.wled.ge/features/multi-strip/ So much of what I do is not technical and just more trial and error. I generally will just test everything out on the floor with little to no power injection, see how it looks and then go from there until I'm happy with how it looks!

That's a good question that nobody knows. I want to daisy chain 15 meters and I'm wondering the same thing. What length do you want? And have you managed to find anymore information?

Thanks so much for watching! Man that is one thing I still need to venture into. I know WLED is compatible with Alexa but I have yet to try getting things set up to test out and make a video. It is for sure on my to do list for projects down the road!

Thanks Chris! Has anyone used the 24v BTF512AC strip from BTF Lighting? I'm trying to get it to work with WLED but can't see to find any information. They are 5 pin.

Thanks so much for watching! That's a great question! I have yet to try those so I would only be guessing. I'll put that on my list of projects/videos to make and hopefully I can get around to it sooner rather than later. Let me know if you do figure it out as I would be curious myself!

Hey Chris, what does this 12V LED strip makes better than the 50% cheaper WS2812 one? In my eyes there is no positive arguments, if you don't use it at 100% Power. Correct me please if I am wrong or missing points.

Thanks and great question! I think you are 100% correct. If you either don't mind doing more power injection points or you don't need a strip to run at max brightness, I would still for sure go with the ws2812 because as you mentioned they are much cheaper!

Great video man I'm building a campervan and the whole roof will have this setup. Question I have is I'm probably going to be running around six 16' led strips and I see that they make 200-300 watt drivers. You're running 60 watts for 2 strips so would you say it's 60 watts per 32 feet? Or 600 less? Also my entire system is running off 12v so I can power these strips directly from a battery bank. Is there a driver that doesn't need to convert 2 AC so I can avoid the plug? Thanks for the input dude. It's helping my idea bc closer to reality

Thanks so much for watching and that sounds like an epic project! So I wish i was more knowledgeable on the specific details of the power aspect of things. (I could but I just have not taken the time to really dive into this) I really generally just order a few different power supplies, hook things up on the floor, see how it looks and then go from there in regards to bigger supply, smaller supply or power injections. I have also never done as big of a project that your taking on so I don't have firsthand experience on what to use but trial and error is the best way to go! I'm also not aware of a driver that does not need to convert 2 ac but I can for sure see what that would be helpful! It very well may exist but i've just never looked into that either. I am at some point wanting to get more into leds and cars so hopefully I can be of more help on these types of questions down the road! Maybe someone else whos reading the comments might know for sure and can chime in on some of these great questions!

Hi. wonderful tutorial, it pushed me try. Just becouse i had a lot of 2815 that i use for shows on stages, and i was searching a good solution to avoid distance limitation with cables. Unfortunatly my first test returned a full white strip, blinking a bit, with tiny rgb noise. Backup and Gnd wired toghether as you... i try to ask, beacause looks so simple but i'm not seeing the proper light at the end... any suggestion? i'm powering the esp32 with a phone charger through usb, and the ledstrip through a DC power supply. maybe is that? i bought a pack of 12Vto5V, that will arrive in few days thanks a lot!

Thanks for reaching out! One thing to double check is that the gnd from the power supply, led strip and eap device is all common. Also double check in led preferences that the dpio pin is set to the pin that you used for data on the board. Let me know if any of that helps!

Plz tell me what I'm missing here regarding your 12v 5a power supply. You used 2 full 5m strips which appeared to be 60 leds/m. LEDs are 0.3w each so 60 LEDs x 10m = 180W / 12V = 15amps General rule of thumb is to add 20% to the power supply so how are you running those lights (which should be using an 18amp power supply) on a 5a?

Thanks so much for watching! That's a great question! I don't have the technical knowledge of a lot of people out there yet but my understanding is that led strips recommend power based on max performance. I really have never had the need to run things at full brightness/full white and when running things at lets say 50%, its still very bright and hard to look at. Also, running animations and any other color than white will use far less than the max of what the lights are capable of. I could be way off on my assumptions but I have always been more of a lets plug things in and see what happens type of guy when it comes to playing around with LEDs.

If I understand everything right - for WS2815 model is not real to connect controller with remote control, only WIFI or Bluetooth?
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! You can connect the WS2815 strips to a wide variety of controllers. But my understanding is you do need a controller because if you just provide power to these lights, there is nothing then telling the lights what to do.

Did you use any additiona power injection on the two 5 meter or you powered booth from one side?

On this video I just was powering the entire 2 strips with no power injection. There was a little noticeable voltage drop when I had everything at full brightness but nothing was noticeable during all the animation. Thanks for watching!
