We review the Sony 600mm f/4 GM lens (sdp.io/sony600) at $13,000, when used with a Sony a9 and 2x teleconverter. That's a pretty typical price; most people buy a 600 f4 because they want top-end wildlife performance. Sony's 600mm lens keeps up with the Canon and Nikon versions, and it's worth the price of entry... but there are a couple of big problems.

Thank you so much for pointing out the issues with the mirrorless viewfinder and wildlife. My greatest pleasure in wildlife photography is watching the subject through my camera between shots. I'ld rather see my subjects directly, as opposed to an electronic rendering.

Despite 'all' the shortcomings of the A9, I have just bought one. I currently shoot the Nikon D850 and D500 with the Sigma Sport 150-600. From the videos I've seen (lots!, including Mark Smith's fabulous BIF work), the A9 and the new 200-600 zoom (I've preordered) will be the new combination of choice for those of us who can't justify a 400mm F2.8 or 600mm f4.0 prime. Yes, I could wait for the A9ii or for Nikon to make a Z series that can handle BIF, but I'm not getting any younger. At some point, you have to buy what's available out there.

Very nice review, looking at it as a whole not only focusing on the lens. There is the good and the bad. I agree with all the critics too and who knows maybe the rumours getting the A9-II in the autumn is true, at least it makes much sense in the light of gearing up for the Olympics by Sony as seen from the sports-oriented lenses.

Nice review but I doubt that EVF-lag is relevant to more “down to earth” focal lengths than at 1200(!) mm. I mean it’s almost impossible to follow a bird in flight with what is practically a telescope.

I'd love to try the 600 at 1200mm. I've yet to experience lag with the shutter. I"m only shooting the 100-400 GM however. Love my A9. He's right about weather sealing.I had a situation where a great grey owl was sitting nicely. Shutter was at 400. It suddenly flew my way. It was snowing gently. I cranked my shutter up as fast as I could. Managed a wicked shot, but in the process, I cranked some snow in on the shutter button which damaged the motherboard. it wasn't covered. :( Waaaah. So now I have a raincoat for negative weather. But I love everything else about it. The 600 looks great, but I think I might opt for the 400 2.8 because with the 1.4 and 2.0 TCs, it would provide some longer distances at F4 and 5.6 yet providing a 2.8 for situations where light isn't the greatest or when a subject is closer. I shoot wildlife only so not worried about sports. The ultimate would be a 100-400 f4 with the built in 1.4 tc like Canon or the Sony 200-600 f4. BUT until then, maybe the 400 2.8 would do the trick. I could always sell it at a good price later I imagine. I know one thing - I love my 100-400 GM, but there are recent situations with foxes and owls where I'm in heavily treed forests with tons of leaves (great to see after the horrible Canadian winter/spring we've had), but the lighting isn't always the best.

A lot of the time for tracking fast moving birds, I could only do it with both eyes open, one watching the viewfinder and the other in the real-world. Its hard to do at first, but once you get used to it, you get more frames in focus. Haven't tried with EVF though.

Tony , this is awesome info, from you and other photographers Sony can now take the information and go back to improve the A9 in these areas and you know Sony will make it happen in the A9 mk2 ,maybe even a better sensor and 40 megapixels, mirrorless is great and still has a little way to go to be as good as the Nikon or Canon equivalent , Sony has done amazing things considering they only entered the dslr market place in 2005 and will catch up with Nikon/Canon in time.

@@sadenb They haven't done it yet because the body design would have to be fundamentally changed. I expect that Sony will eventually be forced to release a real pro-quality body to get real weather-sealing and better heat dissipation (see Panasonic S1/S1R). But whether they've begun that work yet... who knows? If they're smart, they have. But they may also dither on that for up to a year until the LMA gets its first two dozen L-mount lenses out and Panny becomes an actual threat.

The A9 always struck me as sort of a beta version of a really awesome camera when they launch the A9ii. Some things it does REALLY well, but then there's also these flaws here and there, that makes it seem like they just patchworked around the really awesome parts and got it out there. I suspect they'll have improvements on many if not all of your complaints on the next version.

The Emo Emu Sony has been innovating their mirrorless cameras so fast that it comes as no surprise that most of their first generation series are bit rough around the edges. Look how long it took them to release a7iii - a superb budget full frame that is still without a match a whole year later. I’m sure we are going to see a9Mk2 and a9R this fall with Japan Olympics coming up next year. Sony has long stated that they wanted to conquer Pro Sports shooters by summer 2020 and they are well on their path to achieve it.

Great video. Thank you. So glad you shoot with both eyes open. More people should get use to that. *This way when an object goes by your lens you can still see it to chase it. If you close one eye you have shut down half of your vision. The other eye really isn't half either because it's in the viewfinder. *NOTE:. The eye that's in the viewfinder, you can still see past the lens if the subject goes by your lens the other direction. That lens is way out of my budget, unless it came as an accessory on a vehicle. Again thank you for the info and the test you did.

I shoot sports (soccer) using Canon 7D with 300mm f4 with 1.4x. Got a chance to shoot with an A9 (with 70-200 f2.8) and looking forward to check it out, as it seems like this system just much better. However, I find that constantly switching from looking at the scene live to "look for the action" and then looking into the camera EVF to start to shoot to be tiring. I think it is because the focus for eyes is much different looking at the live scene, then having to look through the EVF and the constant readjustment becomes a burden throughout the game. It is just more transparent using regular mirrored DSLR. I am very near sighted, shooting while with my eye glasses. Your comment on the "lag" of the Sony may make things worse.

A7iiiR has a different AF system to the A9 and A7III. Lag on the A7iii has seriously decreased after the last 3.1 firmware and only seems to be improving. In regards to other lenses of this range, Im getting better results than the 7dmkii with Canon fit sigma glass on the A7iii. No requirement for focus tuning and far increased speed. I has anyone actually tried the A7iii properly for wildlife or sports or is only me getting good results? Not that I care, but Ive had people online slamming the MC-11 Sigma 150-600c and Sport version, saying they are going to show in a video why Sony glass wipes the floor with them but I don't see anything to show for it. Not sure I understand your comments about the a9 AF vs a7riii AF. For BIF, I don't find either one of them does a consistent/adequate job in tracking mode unless the bird is in a clear blue sky or other very simple/contrasting/distant background which doesn't seem to happen that often. With close/complex backgrounds, I find I most often get better results using an M or L Flexible Spot (non-tracking) and depending on myself to keep the spot on the bird. Maybe I am missing something with the tracking setting, but ... I haven't tried 1200mm yet :-)

Wow! Thank you very much for an honest review of the a9. You may want to tell Chelsea to stop picking up those big lenses by the camera grip. I recently had to have the lens mount replaced on both my D850 and 400mm VR because I accidentally picked my kit up wrong while in a hurry. The giveaway was that for some reason the fine tune had changed radically and Nikon had to replace the mount on both body and lens. And did I just see you put that new Sony 600mm into the case with no rear lens cap on? With those kinds of habits it's no wonder you have those bad sensor dust spots. But not to worry, Roger will fix it all up.

Zero lag would be an ideal goal but I suspect it would double or quadruple the price of the storage and all electronics. Leading the action and anticipating the shot was, and still is, a skill every photographer won't have. Like manually focusing at a soccer game, or with moving wildlife. Agree with the EVF Lag on current mirrorless cameras is limiting, irritating and is exacerbated when using super telephotos such as 600mm. I tolerate it with my Z7 and Nikkor 600mm only because I know Nikon will deliver a Pro Mirrorless and a 600mm S which will be a major improvement. I am not in a rush to chase other camera brands incremental improvements.

Interesting video and beautifully sharp looking shots... but a touch of unconscious bias in the FPS graph. Canon and Nikon 10 fps score shown below the 10 line on the graph while the Sony 20 fps score matches the 20 line on the graph! (Don't think perspective of image is an excuse either)
@thisis5123

Yea the bias is always fairly hardcore whenever Sony comes out with something new. Most people wont know better either. Most people wont go out and buy an A9 + 600f4 and a Canon 1DXII +600f4 to compare. But myself and people who I know switched back because the tracking in extreme situations with the A9 was getting distracted by random things. Not to mention they don’t even go over AF settings when mentioning these results. It’s basically a Sony advertisement.

Great review. I am a former Canon 600mm f/4L IS user. What I take away from this review is : 1/Sony copied the ergos on the Canon lens right down to the color! 2/ It's a fantastic lens but using it really sucks! :) Bring on the a9II! Oh, BTW, some really nice bird shots!

VF image is a tenth of a second behind and that caused you to lose thd bird? I don't think so. The tiny AoV at 1200mm is the problem. Nothing else can track a tern against a busy background? You need to dust off your D500.

The lag would probably be the same but it wouldn't be so hard to keep a moving subject in the frame because the angle of view would be 2x more.

Does Sony have a “sports” view like the Fuji XT3? This makes it easier for me to track very fast sports as you can see your subject even before it enters the frame. Hope this is helpful.

You said two things I wonser about. 1) A9 + Sony 600/4 + TC2 is better (in resolution or speed and ability to focus because the actual aperture is f=8 or what?) than Nikon D850 + Nikkor 600/4 (latest version I hope - E FL lens) + TC2. Nevertheless I will argue for a less optical quality on Nikon's TC2 compared to Sony's TC2 and Canons TC2 as well. 2) You said that A9's 24 Mp sensor isn't enough when using the lens + TC2! I will say that you on the contrary get more blur problems when shooting with such high focus lengths as 1200 mm if you use a 45 or 50 Mp sensor compared to a 24 Mp. As a nature photographer you certainly don't need a high resolution sensor what ever high technology there is in the camera as a whole, the sensor or in the camera computer. And that is if you only look at the resolution and the ability to get pin sharp pics. Not to speak about dynamic range, bit rate maybe and color range. Otherwise a superb information from you, thanks. You are brilliant. Maybe a little too fast talking for a foreigner ... ;-)

If you are looking trough EVF the LAG dont make you fall behind, it dont matter to you if things happen 1 sec later cos time is relative and is observed in lag anyway. The eye lag, light travel, reaction time of the person is the key . Ok ok it is science thingy but true.

- 48MP sensor lacking AA filter - ISO invariance - 14bit raw available in all drive modes - lossless raw compression - prerecord buffer of variable duration & frame rate - 50% greater resolution & refresh rate of EVF & monitor - same 20fps or even, with all of these features, 18fps - two XQD card slots employing the greater write speeds - ND filter built in - flash transceiver built in - larger battery for all of this - true weather sealing - sensor shielding during lens changes - three more custom buttons - nearly identical form factor - recessed slider to lock all settings - on/off lever moved away from shutter button & front dial - mode dials whose lock pins can be disabled - Sony's picture profiles including logs and HLG - touchscreen menu - strap anchors that don't jiggle - some focus aid like the EOS R's arrows
@Falcrist
@Falcrist 4 жыл бұрын
@@kalali462 The Sony cameras are already ISO invariant except for the gain step at ISO640. You don't want them to get rid of that step, since it would necessarily reduce low light performance. Reduced ramerate is a bad idea. Faster is better. The battery is fine currently. If they can improve the capacity, that's good, but don't make it larger. 2× XQD slots is a hard no from me. UHS-II SD all the way!

The title of this video should have been ‘My rant about Sony a9’. I get it that no lens exists without a matching camera and Sony a9 is not an ideal companion for certain situations. But I could rant as much about Canon or Nikon cameras as they also have plenty of very serious drawbacks when it comes to super zooms. Yet, I don’t remember Tony transposing his reviews of Canon or Nikon lease onto the respective cameras.

Yeah, anytime a body limits the performance of a lens, we bring it up. We almost always review body + lens as a cohesive system. But this was also the first time that we discovered the problem with EVF lag on the a9; we've reviewed the a9 before and it wasn't a problem because we weren't ever able to shoot with such a narrow angle of view. Would you rather we not mention a potential deal-breaker to buyers of a $13,000 lens?
@user-ym6lc7pk1e
@user-ym6lc7pk1e 4 жыл бұрын
Tony & Chelsea Northrup No, no - it was a very good thing that you brought up limitations of EVF in A9 for this use case. You just did not have to spend half the time ranting about it. A9 is a great camera and 600mm f/4 is a superb modern lens, that just happened to come up a bit ahead of its time. I wonder if Sony should have kept this lens in a stable until revealing A9Mk2, which would have faster processing and reduced EVF and shutter lag.

A couple of questions Tony: 1. You said there was a noticeable viewfinder lag when you shot at 1200mm. Did you have the Viewfinder frame rate set to "high"? 2. Which sd card did you use? 3. Were you shooting compressed or uncompressed raw + jpg?
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 4 жыл бұрын
1. Yeah 2. It's tough to say because we each had two different cards and we both had the problem. We've had it in the past, too. It doesn't seem to be dependent on the card, but they're all UHS-II pro cards. 3. Always compressed raw

@@TonyAndChelsea I've experienced this card indexing issue in all my Sony a series cameras (a7r3, a73, and a9). I've searched online and not found anyone else discussing it so I'm glad to hear you bring it up. It's definitely a problem but I've not lost any images when it happens, only not able to use the card in camera until I reformat, but all the images are present when I download. But oddly it's become worse over time. I have been using all Lexar 128GB XC II cards and have experienced it on all of them. I was actually beginning to wonder if it was a bug or virus because it only started after using them for a year or more. Until January, I hadn't ever had a problem then suddenly that problem was showing up in all three of my Sony cameras. I've been using the Sony cards for about 2 months now and haven't experienced the issue at all yet.
