@Rapunzel ♪ Being loved is nice. I'm 66.8 years old. Everyone eventually dies and we only really ever had ourselves. It is painful to say goodbye to those that shaped us and loved us. As you get older, you will understand and there is nothing we can do about it. You have to be your own best friend in this life and not become addicted to other people. Eventually, they all leave one way or another and sometimes someone takes their place but sometimes not. Usually not. Everything changes. It is best to love yourself. That person will never leave you.

I'm old enough to remember when the drinking age in at least half of the States was still 18. The federal government really pressured the States to raise the drinking age to 21. Interestingly, on military installations it is my understanding that the drinking age is still 18. I generally take the attitude that if you're old enough to vote and you're old enough to fight, you're old enough to have a beer 🍺.

Just before I turned 18, the law was lowered from 21 to 18. That change was a big result of the Vietnam War. If you are old enough to fight and die you are old enough to drink, was the rational. I must admit I agree. Just before my kid sister turned 18, the age was moved back to 21, thanks to Mothers against drunk drivers. States had to go back to 21 to get Federal Highway funds.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving was the force behind getting the drinking age changed to 21 in most states by 1986. States could refuse to change their drinking age but Federal Highway funds would be diverted to highway safety programs progressively year by year until only a bare minimum could be used for road construction and maintenance. Most states acquiesced rather quickly.

11:50 Fun fact: In WWII German spies tried to infiltrate American Army units by wearing American uniforms. Being German they took great care to fully prepare themselves learning all about the area they were pretending to be from, making sure their accent was perfect and learning all those things that Americans are suppose to know, like the words to the Star Spangled Banner, making sure they could sing the entire song on command. And it was this that was their downfall. Being asked to sing the 2nd verse was a trap, because most Americans don't even know the song has more than the first verse. I can guess it scared the hell out of Americans, "Hey buddy, prove your aren't a damn spy. What is the 2nd verse of the National Anthem?" Meanwhile the German spy thinks, "I got this!" and sings out his own doom. Spies are not protected by the Geneva Convention.

My gramma told me a similar story where Americans were sent to infiltrate Germany. They learned everything they could and spoke perfect German. What got them in the end was that they cut their entire steak into pieces before eating it. This is common in the US but not so much in Europe, where they cut off only the piece they are about to eat. I’m not sure if this is a true story or not 🤷🏻‍♂️

The prohibition on "non-nutritive items" dates back to the late 19th Century when the Pure Food Act was passed. When I was a teenager in Michigan there was a big case over an obscure 100 year old law. A man was in a canoe (can't remember if it was a lake or river) and he tipped. He went on a loud profanity laden tirade for several minutes. A state trooper was there and cited him under this old law banning profanity in front of women and children, of which there were many in the park. The man fought the ticket and I think he was convicted and told to pay because it was a real law. It became a cause celeb for awhile because of the first amendment and was eventually overturned.

In Alabama my state putting salt on a railroad track can be punishable by death. This one sounds like one of the most weird laws in Alabama, but there's actually a reason behind it. Several years ago, my wife and I visited Natchez, Mississippi. During our stay, we took a carriage tour of the city, and the carriage driver told us a story about a saloon that was in business during the first half of the 1800's in Natchez, where the saloon owner kept an elephant just out side the saloon as an attraction for customers to see. As the story was told to us, one night a couple of customers fed their alcoholic drinks to the elephant. The elephant got drunk, went on a rampage, and caused a lot of property damage in the city. The carriage driver concluded the story by saying there is still a city ordinance on the books in Natchez that forbids feeding alcoholic beverages to an elephant.

what about recycling, when you can't transport empty bottles which of course no longer are sealed? smash them to pieces so that it is no longer a container? what about emptying a bottle out of the window and then smashing it after seing a police car? but i forgot that in the usa you probably won't transport bottles for recycling anyway :-) on the other hand, empty bottles in the back of a trash collector truck are open containers too, at least in some states ? in germany it's "easy": it's always allowed, open or closed doesn't matter. you may even drink while driving _as long as you don't go over the legal limit._ but of course depending on circumstances it may cause you to spend quite some time for a breath test or even waiting for the results of blood samples. and after an accident you also can't argue that you were a little under the legal limit which applies only to otherwise safe driving.

paragraph 307 of german penalty law specifies penalties for causing an explosion with nuclear energy that endangers body or life of other people or of material goods of high value. section 1 gives "at least 5 years" if explosion and endangerment both were intentional and on purpose, section 2 gives "1-10 years" if the explosion was intentional but the endangerment was only careless, section 3 increases these penalties if (even carelessly) at least one person dies from one of these two crimes (to "lifelong or at least 10 years" for 307.1, and to "not under 5 years" for 307.2), and finally section 4 gives penalties of up to 3 years or monetary fine if both the explosion and the endangerment were only caused carelessly. in all four cases, already the preparation is seen as "having done the crime", but penalties (for cases 1 and 2) can be reduced or even canceled (for case 4) if he gives up the crime and tries to minimize the damage. thus causing it carelessly and trying to prevent damage could even lead to getting no penalty, if nobody dies from it. "fun" fact: from 1990 to 2001 there have been 7 cases in the statistics (one of them an attempt) and one more in 2018, but those cases may also have been only data input errors in the statistics, and official answers to questions about it were contradicting. my own guess: after 1990 the military situation (eg russian soldiers being recalled from germany) was a bit chaotic and weapons and ammunitions were sometimes sold. also nuclear material from several former countries might have disappeared a few times. if any deals (not necessarily in germany, but through germany or by germans) involved any nuclear materials they might have ended up as "deeds (experiments/preparations)" under this paragraph ...

As for the Washington law (13), this is commonly done to get a suspect on a valid charge if they can't prove the actual crime at the time. When I lived in Iowa and sat for Jury Duty, our case was for a drug dealer and one of the charges was "Failing to get a state license for selling illegal drugs". The law says you had to drive to Des Moines and pay a fee to get a state badge for selling drugs. Since no criminals do that, it is an easy way to charge them with something.

The "passenger area" of the vehicle encompasses the area where the driver and passengers could be seated and any area within the reach of a person seated in the vehicle-including the glove compartment. This was to protect the children that may be dining in the establishment. Best part, according to the Food & Wine article I had up, this is not an antiquated law because of the long history of Mormons and Utah. No, the law took effect in 2009. Also in Utah, the state I grew up in, beer over 4% can only be sold in the State Liquor Stores, along with wine and hard liquor, and never on Sunday. Hi Feli! Love your videos! Here is a crazy city ordinance I heard about when I was in high school. In my home town an ordinance was still on the books regarding operating a motor vehicle through an intersection. The ordinance said that a motor vehicle had to stop some specified distance before the intersection, the driver proceed to the intersection on foot and fire a gun into the air several times to warn any approaching horses, then wait a specified amount of time, then go back to the car and proceed cautiously through the intersection of course giving way to any horses or horse drawn carriages. Maybe the ordinance was a little less crazy when it was adopted, but even crazy back then (where are those bullets going and what about the delay in getting back to the motor vehicle?)! I could go on... What about all the "blue laws" that regulated behavior on Sundays of what we would today consider normal (maybe even essential) human activities? Check in particular the "red states" for bizarre laws many of which are still on the books.

On "non-food items," don't forget the Tide Pod Challenge of a few years ago... Kids were knowingly eating laundry detergent. So, yeah, you'd need to explain to people that they can't eat the plastic container inside a Kinder Egg. *Because idiots would take it as a challenge.* Many products have "unnecessary" warning labels (such as "Don't use this hair dryer in the bathtub") because those warnings *are* necessary. On tying up the alligator to an object: that used to be a method for horse thieves - tie up your alligator to the hitching post, and the horses already there would spook and try to escape. In all the confusion, you round up the stray horses and disappear. It's also a problem with people that have pet alligators leaving them outside while they enter a building. The wild animal snaps and harasses everyone that comes by, and generally makes a nuisance of itself.

In Wichita, Kansas, it used to be illegal to spit on the sidewalk. My father had an old brick from a sidewalk in Wichita and it had, in raised letters, "DO NOT SPIT ON SIDEWALK". My recollection was that it came from one of two reasons. First, it is unhygienic and during the flu epidemic of 1918, it was thus illegal to spit on the sidewalk out of fear of spreading the flu. The second reason was that Wichita was a "cow town" (lots of cattle drives ended in Wichita where the cows would be boarded to trains and sent to meat packing plants in Chicago) and there were lots of cowboys that came through town. They tended to chew tobacco and would spit on the sidewalk. This made the townspeople unhappy so they outlawed spitting on the sidewalk. I don't know which reason is true, but thought it was interesting.

Just for you because you're from Munich and probably know someone who has Bärlauch growing in his yard. Ramps - the wild onion in West Virginia is the US version of Bärlauch. They are related and you can make any Bärlauch recipe using ramps and it tastes exactly the same. So it's not really the super foul odor - it's garlic odor. If you get your hands on some in spring, make a nice pesto - it's phenomenal. I can get them in spring from a friend in Oregon where they grow too and every now and then you can get them at a Whole Foods store when in season. They need frost to grow so you won't find them in the southern states.

Some of the laws you never saw prosecuted are real, and were intentionally written in a way that they never would be prosecuted. Some laws like this are written to make a political statement. Look into Kennesaw, Georgia where a law was passed back in the 80's or 90's that makes it illegal NOT to have a firearm in your home if you live within the city limits. To my knowledge, that law has never been prosecuted or even leveraged against anyone, but that wasn't why it was passed. It was a political statement against cities that were outright banning firearms at the time. Some of them are just for fun and publicity for usually smaller towns and counties. A very famous saying in the US is, "There is no such thing as bad publicity." Quaint sounding and obscure laws are sometimes used to just get a small town on the map of public awareness from media accounts about the law(s). The "Bigfoot Laws" are a prime example of this. There is/was a significant amount of tourism related to Bigfoot sightings in those areas that could use all the tourism dollars it can get. What better way does a city council or county commission have to add a little fuel to the hype fire about Bigfoot than making it an endangered species and getting into the newspapers for doing so?

I suppose to refer to 14:53. As so many people mention it, how should it be pronounced? I'm asking because I, as a German, would have said it exactly like this, and to me it sounds pretty close to Google's American English version of pronunciation. (And no, there is no German accent, since "Motorist" would be pronounced on the last syllable, like MotoRIST in German, if we used that word.)
@sayrerowan734
@sayrerowan734 2 жыл бұрын
@@mizapf , that's not how any native English speaker says it. It should be MOW-tor-ist. Like MOE, ROW, or TOW. She goes 'mah-ter-ist. More of an 'a' sound than an 'o'.

@@sayrerowan734 I see, thank you. So the proper pronunciation by IPA would be /ˈmoʊt(ə)ɻɪst/. Someone below said this had a German accent, but I'd say just the opposite is true: While most Germans pronounce "not" with an /o/ (instead of an /a/), Feli actually did an overcorrection of o to a, probably mistaking the long o for a short o. By the way, the German "Motor" is pronounced /ˈmo:tɔɐ/, nothing like /ma-.../. In German dialects, we seem to have some more varieties of pronunciation than expected; maybe that's the reason I did not notice the mispronunciation.

In the UK it is illegal to kill or harass the Loch Ness Monster. While passing this law about 40 years ago the parliament was well aware that the monster probably does not exist, but a manufacturer of whisky had offered a large prize for its capture either alive or dead. To be formally given the protection the monster (which probably does not exist) had to be given a Latin name, Nessiteras Rhombopteryx, in accordance with the Linnaean Society rules.

When I worked at Subway (sandwich shop) there was a problem with another related Subway with regard to a burrito restaurant being opened in the same plaza. Restaurants often sign agreements with plaza owners to prevent direct competition of the same type of food sales in the plaza. Subway was in a legal battle with the property owner debating whether or not a burrito constitutes a sandwich. Unfortunately, I left the job before the case was settled.

I just recently got pulled over in Virginia for going 55 in a 35. While the law itself isn't crazy, how serious of a crim it is shocked me. In Virginia going 20mph over the limit is considered reckless driving and is a class 1 misdemeanor (one step below a felony) and is a jailable offense. It is treated as a worse crime than drunk driving. I'm a native Virginian and had no idea that speeding could cause you to have an actual criminal record that will forever show up on background checks when getting jobs.
