In this video I go over a list of prepping items and survival gear that will be sought after during a prolonged grid down/ collapse/ disaster event. The items on this list are primarily for the purpose of trade and barter. These are the top barter items in my opinion although I'm sure there is tons more that could be added to this list, leave items I may have missed in the comment section below!

Te best way to do this is to kill 2 proverbial birds with one stone, learning edible plants, and brushing your teeth properly (yes, really). Put the book with a sticky note or bookmark in it into your bathroom. When you go to brush your teeth, read an entry in the edible plants book. You need to brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes for good dental hygiene, but it's boring to just stand there doing that. So open up the book, read an entry (or two), and within a few months you'll have gone through the whole thing. Then just start over at the beginning, because memorization for most folks takes a few runs through...and, well, you still have to clean your teeth, right? Or if it's on your phone as an ebook, you can do that, though a physical book never has to rely on battery charge levels, just enough light to read it by.

Metal sewing needles were a prime trade item that Lewis and Clark took with them. Small, lightweight and currently cheap they hit the trifecta. Sewing supplies as a whole make sense. The item I don't know of a manual powered sewing machine that has those qualities. The 1632/Ring of Fire series by Eric Flint goes into depth on early sewing machine manufacture. Barter skills is an unsung skill. Being able to give minimums while receiving the maximum is very helpful. I have been going to flea markets and one advantage is seeing how people barter and trade their items. It's a whole different world perspective. My one friend "buys" her teacup collection pieces by volunteering for the one stall owner as an extra set of eyes once-in-awhile. While I am still new to haggling and barter, I can say that being exposed to it by itself is a huge leg up from most people who are stuck to traditional currency.

Good tips. I will have to stock up on some stuff. I do have a suggestion - Regular monofilament fishing line degrades over time. You're much better off with braided fishing line like 100% Spectra or something comparable. The advantages of the braided fishing line is that it can hold a lot more weight per diameter than standard fishing line. I would also recommend storing handfuls of fishing hooks. Yes, you can make them but improvised ones are never as good as the real thing. The real hooks are lightweight, easy to store, cheap and they can last you a long time if you treat them well.
@ymazz2921
@ymazz2921 4 жыл бұрын
@Alina McPherson It sure does cost more, but if my life depends on something I don't get discouraged on the price. Here are some of the reasons why I would buy at least 1 spool of braided. For example some braided lines have a 30 lb. test rating, but their thickness is equivalent to the diameter of 6 lb monofilament. You can carry more capacity of braided that won't snap on you with 3 lb. fish. You could carry 30 lb. mono on you but it's thicker, so the fish might spot it (they might not go for the bait). The braided is thinner, so you can carry more length on you in the same amount of packaging. I say 3 lb. because mono stretches under stress and most lines are tested and rated using dead weight. A fighting fish will exert more energy that a dead one obviously. A couple nicks on mono and you lose your meal and your invaluable hook. Braided lines are much better for trot lines than mono. I've lost many good catfish overnight on mono in the past. The big cats get hooked and they swim back and forth wearing down the line on a rock or debris in the river until it snaps. Braided lines are more resilient to that kind of wear. Plus you can use braided lines for more than just fishing. You can use it to snare small game (4 legged and feathered alike) or bind your arrowhead to an arrowshaft. You could do that with mono, but with stretch and wear it won't last as long. Fluorocarbon line is better than monofilament because it's virtually invisible in the water and it hardly stretches. It is still susceptible to nicks and it does degrade over time. It is more expensive than mono, but it won't break the bank like braided. I hope this comment helps. Good luck and God bless.

All types of cords, ropes, buckets and bottles. Good luck making your own nylon, PET or whatever. Same goes for tarps and raincoats. Batteries! Both rechargable (if you have an energy source) and not rechargable (for devices with low energy drain or trade). Reliable flashlights, watches/clocks, scales,... would be nice. Tools. And maybe some metal to make new ones - if you have the skills. Not just steel, keep bronze in mind.

@@msgottaneedtoknow good advice. I'm guessing in a true shtf you will unable to get baby formula. Most off the shelf store-bought honey is likely pasteurized (all the medicinal properties are heated out) and/or made out of corn syrup. You need to buy unpasteurized/raw honey... that's the stuff that lasts forever. There is a difference in price but one is basically just sugar and the other has medicinal properties and shelf-life. If you buy from a local bee keeper then it also contains anti-allergens for those who suffer from seasonal local pollen allergies.

Good list. I concur with all that is here. What I might add to the "tape, glue, etc" category would be rope, paracord and tie wire (the stuff you use to tie rebar. VERY useful!). The other thought I had is coffee and tea. They don't weigh much and last forever. Who wouldn't like a nice hot cup of coffee after being without for an extended period of time (Might add in some powdered coffee creamer too)? Personally, I think cigarettes would be a great bartering chip. Some marijuana might be good too.

Best part of tobacco and weed. You can grow them. Stockpile some cartons (vacuum seal but it doesn't matter) then get some seeds and tend to (potted?) plants. If SHTF but the law is still around up here in Canada, ex. second recession. Remember, 4 plants to a home for weed. Let's hope it doesn't get to that point but it's good knowledge.
