An evolution over the last couple of years, the Promaz Racing Mazda RX-8 recently ran a personal best pass at the Brisbane Jamboree of 7.41 @ 188mph.
Taking a closer look under the skin, the RX-8 is powered by a Promaz 13B Cosmo bridge port race engine that features BilletPro front and rear billet end plates for added strength and durability. A unique feature of these plates is the innovative locking mechanism of the removable cast iron insert.
There are many other custom CNC machined parts on this car including the intake plenum and sump just to name a few.
Creating and controlling the boost is a large Garrett GTX55 turbocharger and Turbosmart wastegate. Methanol fuel is delivered via a mechanical fuel pump and governed via a FuelTech FT500 computer. Simon shifts gears via a Liberty Equaliser clutchless transmission. The RX-8 is a ¾ chassis that still features fully functioning rear doors. We caught up with the team as they were preparing for Jamboree where the car consistently punched out over 1000hp.

and they just released the billet housings that can hold 100psi of boost they where limited to 65 or so with the stock housings hopefully this will get them rotaries in the 5s

The world record for a 13b done by rafaelito data log showed 50psi and backed off at about 1100ft. Unfortunately the billet plates don't seal for shit past 55psi they loose power so once that's sorted a 13b on 100psi would do a 5.9 east.

1300 hp from a 1.3 l engine, that is 1000hp per litrem, and probably 1000nm per litre. This is more than a top fuel dragster

CALVIN THY NSU Motorenwerke was the first car company to use the Rotary engine but with little success. It was unreliable. And many car owners were without a working engine and have to swap to piston based engines.

CALVIN THY sorry correction in 1967 Mazda produced the first Rotary engine car. The Cosmo 110S. In 1964 the NSU spider was NSU creation. But not as successful as Mazda.

Wrong, a Mazda 13B engine has a total, true displacement of 3.9 liters and when compared to other 4-strokes with 720° firing order sequences it is considered by engineers, motorsports sanctioning bodies and government tax regulations as a 2.6 liter.

Beautiful music. This once again reaffirms that a 13B needs to be a part of my life before I shuffle off. Remember in the early 90's when ppl believed anything larger than a mild extend had to be NA? Never saw any BP turbo's until more recent times. Fucken oath theyre expensive to set up right!

well the port work has to suit the application (N/A or turbocharged) eg a classic N/A BP would likely have wayyy too much overlap for a turbo setup, would simply be a waste of fuel at that point, but port it with a turbocharger in mind and you'll have a better setup, that said, street wise you don't need a massive port on a turbo 13b, much like putting a huge turbo on, it just doesn't help drive-ability at lower RPM etc

Real reason is because with RHD the steering column is a restriction when designing an exhaust manifold. More space for a better-flowing ex. manifold with left hand drive cars

And weight distribution. There are Xr6 turbo utes here in Australia that have been converted to LHD for better weight distribution. The front left wheel on a drag car lifts up so LHD helps with stopping that. .

gmax876 it's a clutchless 5 speed there's a clutch only for take off and the rest u don't use the clutch u just smash gears these are my favorite kind of trans and makes this build that much cooler

Rotaries absolutely LOVE going wide out, they were never meant for stop and go traffic! Look up reports of the 787b post-race after they tore the engine apart, the high rpms are where rotaries thrive.

@@SpudEater i have heard, that in the manual for the RX7, it clearly states, that the engine needs to go to redline at least once every time it is started up and warmed up, to clear the apex seals of carbon buildup.

Every engine will (usually) be stripped down after each race meeting. This is no different to any high performance drag/ racing engine, however, at the top level of drag racing, the piston engines normally get new pistons and rings between each pass of the drag strip, due mainly to their easy to access internals and to prevent any failures from destroying the entire engine. You could almost say that the rotary engines are more reliable than piston engines at race longevity, due to the fact they are usually run for an entire race meeting without any major maintenance/repairs occurring between runs. Therefore unless there is a failure with the engine, they are never run until they are "broken". A failure can occur with any engine, be it Formula 1 or a shit-box, from anywhere from 1 second to never.

The 26B engine displaced 2.6 L (2,616 cc) per set of four chambers (counting only one 654 cc (39.9 cu in) chamber for each of the four rotors) - thus the "26" in the series name suggesting 2.6 litres - and developed 700 hp (522 kW) at 9000 rpm.[20][21] The engine design uses peripheral intake ports, continually variable geometry intakes, and an additional (third) spark plug per rotor.[22][23][24]
