Since the USS Langley’s commissioning in 1922, America's aircraft carriers and embarked air wings have projected power, sustained sea control, bolstered deterrence, and maintained the U.S.'s enduring commitments worldwide.
On this episode, former USS Abraham Lincoln commanding officer Captain Walter "Sarge" Slaughter and episode 83 guest Dave "Mini Me" Kurtz, both U.S. Navy, discuss the relevance of America's carriers since their debut a century ago, through World War 2 to today, and even what the future holds for these capital ships.
Bumper music by Jaime Lopez / announcements by Clint Bell.

Thanks for the episode, its always lovely to hear from onboard persons, like you always bring in. I have fairly read well on the US's ww2 production and pacific theatre. Love the stories of these floating military cities. Could you also produce an episode that talks about food on these carriers, i am pretty sure the American forces eat the best.

A great episode. When I participated in a DV Embark on USS Abraham Lincoln, I got to meet CAPT Slaughter, who was the CO.

@@FighterPilotPodcast Norman Friedman is a long time author ("US carrier aviation: an illustrated design history" et al), historian, policy advisor, guest lecturer, and sea power advocate. You can see some of his stuff here on youtube. Just look up "8 bells, air defense from bi-planes to the cold war."

I've been wondering why (or if) they will ever move away from the angled deck, in favor of (for example) a parallel landing area off to the left side... seems like that would make landings easier, if the pilot could fly the same course as the boat, into the wind, while still maintaining the ability to bolter and go around? Maybe logistics and/or elevator placement? Would be interesting to see.

Quick comment on countries that operate multiple versions of the F-35. Japan is currently operating F-35A and has F-35B on order to fly from their Izumo-class ships. South Korea will potentially be doing the same with their new CVX program in the 2030s.

I understand that a Nimitz class carrier's reactors run for 23 years before needing to be refuelled, with a 4 year mid-life update, giving a 50 year life (23+4+23). I think I heard somewhere that the Ford class reactors run for about 30 years, giving a possible 64 year service life - is that correct?

Hey , could you interview some Pakistani Pilots ? Someone say Kaiser Tufail as he flow the Chinese versions of MIG 17,19 and 21 , the Mirage 3 , 5 and F1 as well as the F-16. I would love to hear a podcast on the Mirage 3/5 from him. Keep up the amazing work.

@@FighterPilotPodcast because it's your latest video and assumed you would be monitoring the comments most frequently on this one. Would you be able to look into Pakistani pilots on mirage or Chinese MIG variants?
