Carrying a heavier load than normal for me on this 1436 jon boat. This is also the second time I'm taking out the Backwater Swomp Lite Glider Kit 12-16 HP.
I was wanting to try the props that Jake at Backwater sent over but with the load that was on the boat, both 9" props were too big.
The main difference was the big cooler adding 110 to 120 pounds. The cooler weighs 32 lbs and it was half full of ice and water (80 lbs)
I will do an empty boat test and go play in the grass another day to see what this kit can do. For now, it handles pretty well. I still get a lot of vibration in the handle, but it keeps its speed with the added load of 110 pounds while running the 8x4 prop. The 9x5 prop was too much and I didn't get to test the 9x4.
BOAT SETUP:
1436 lt Alumacraft Jon Boat (would not recommend - go get a tracker or something else other than an Alumacraft) {135lbs}
Custom front deck and floor {~75lbs}
Battery, trolling motor, fishing supplies, cooler, anchor, etc... = {~100lbs}
My weight = 150lbs
75qt Vibe Element Cooler - {32lbs}
Contents of cooler (half full of ice/water) - {80lbs}
ENGINE SETUP:
13hp Predator Engine by Harbor Freight (serial/model number 60349 [hemi-version]) {76lbs}
Backwater Swomp Lite Glider Kit 12-16 hp {55lbs}
Total weight = 700 pounds

I know a lot of guys want to do tests with the boat as empty and lite as possible. But honestly these fully loaded test videos are much more valuable. The empty videos are useless, unless and guy is boat racing. Who isn't going to have a boat full of gear, ice and beverages. Thanks for the video.

That swamp runner is hard to beat , they preform very well on the smaller motors. I would think they would do just as good on larger motor as well. My 2 .

Thats what I'm starting to figure out. I think this backwater kit would be better on a vtwin engine, but for a single cylinder engine, the swamp runner is the go to. I'd like to test a swamp runner on a vtwin also, but I need a bigger boat for that haha and thank you for your support and being subscribed to the channel for so long, I really appreciate that Bo!

The issue I see with the vibration is that the shift that you had to cut to install the Backwater kit might be the issue. Second is that the shift is shorter then that of the Swamp runner.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
I thought that too, but after talking to a few people, they all said that cutting the output shaft length on the engine wouldn't do that because the center of gravity never changed and therefor would not disrupt the balance of the engine. For the second point, that could be a factor. I was also thinking that the swamp runner shaft has bushing along the inside of the shaft to help support the inner shaft. I do not believe the backwater has any support inside the shaft except for at the ends. This leaves the entire shaft length to do what it wants and could cause vibration

I’m going to pick up a Lowe 1436l next week and I see tons of people using mud motors up here in north Florida and I’ve always heard for my area they were good. I have no experience whatsoever with mud motors but I’m thinking about putting one on this boat anything specific I should know?

A 1436 is best paired with a 13hp engine. A 6.5hp or 8 hp would work if you're on a real tight budget. A 22 or 23 hp engine would be too heavy and too much power for the transom on it, so stick with a 13hp engine or smaller. With the 13hp engine being a single cylinder engine, I would not recommend this backwater kit. It vibrates too much. So I would recommend a Swamp Runner kit. The Medium Kit fits the 13hp engine. If you plan to go faster than 20mph, the 100" shaft would be best, but if you don't like the idea of a longer tail, the 85" would also work perfectly. There are surface drive engines, but those really only come into play once you get into bigger boats and engines. I don't see many surface drives with a 13hp engine.

@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't want the cables in the way. With testing multiple kits on this engine, I didn't want to keep attaching and reattaching the cables/battery. I would also have to have another battery, even though it could be a small lawn mower battery, I still didn't want the extra clutter in the boat for right now. I don't mind hand cranking it for now

Yeah its unfortunate. I still want to put some more hours on it and see if it will smooth out. I'm starting to think that these kits would be good on a vtwin engine so their is less chance of vibration, but for a single cylinder engine, I don't think I would recommend it.

@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on your hp rating for your boat. Most people I hear put a 22hp on it but some also put the 13hp on it. No matter the size (a single cylinder or v-twin), if you get a Thai longtail, you will need a 100" shaft. I don't recommend the backwater unless you are getting a v-twin engine and want to spend the extra money, it will just be slower. If you're going to be running a lighter load most of the time, then a 13hp would probably do you well, but if you consistently have a heavy load the 22hp would probably be better. Just depends on what the boat is rated for.

These are surface drive I can tell already by looking behind you that you're not even throwing a rooster tail which means your pillar propeller is totally under the water there should be a rooster tail behind that thing if it's running surface drive so if you get the right color propeller combination you'd be a lot faster
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
The backwater kit does not run a surface piercing propeller. The entire prop runs under the surface of the water. They can not run a surface piercing propeller due to the short shaft length which requires a ride plate or "cavitation plate" to keep the prop from being unmanageable or hard to handle. With the ride plate being submerged or riding right at the water level, the prop is located under that plate and therefore is completely submerged

@@carson2042 After the experiences I have had, if I were to purchase a longtail it will be a swamp runner. I have had too many negative experiences with the other thai longtail companies along with having other people that have shared their negative experiences also. I would choose a swamp runner over a backwater due to the affordability and performance. Jake at Backwater was great to deal with but for the cost of the backwater, it just didn't perform to the standard I was hoping for. The only time I would recommend a backwater to someone is when their bottom width is greater than 48" because a thai longtail doesn't like boats wider than that. So I would recommend a swamp runner. That is the only brand I would feel comfortable enough recommending to somebody.

@@ericthered9655 That is correct, but I would like to keep it a stock engine so when people watch these videos, I can say that the engine is bone stock and not modified so that they have a realistic expectation of what speed they should be getting with these different longtail kits and predator engines.
@ericthered9655
@ericthered9655 2 жыл бұрын
@@JTgatoring I understand. It would still be stock. The only difference is it wouldn't restrict engine RPMs. It's your call. I'd like to see what it would do without the governor. I'm sure that's how pretty much everyone would run it.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 2 жыл бұрын
@@ericthered9655 There are a good amount of people who do not feel comfortable modifying their engines. There are also those who want the engine as reliable as possible and don't want to touch it that way. The issue you run into with a longtail and a good reason to leave the governor attached is because you can go from full load prop in the water to no load in less than a second when you get a prop blow out. That is when the governor steps in and saves the engine. I think it is safer to keep the governor attached. I would rather provide information that everyone would be able to replicate rather than give numbers people most likely won't achieve. I have a light boat, I'm a light guy, and I could really get this engine pushing some RPMs, but most people aren't 150lbs, riding solo with a 135lb hull. It would be fun to do and push the limit, but that also takes more time and money that I do not currently have.

I recommend the swamp runner because it is has the best chance of working for the person buying it. The mud skipper kit didn't ride good at all for me and the boat I used and I had the same experience with the beaver dam kit. My luck with both the mud skipper and beaver dam kit was bad so therefor I do not recommend them to others... there is a whole series on it explaining why. So if a kit doesn't work for me, why I would I recommend it to others? Same goes for the backwater kit. The backwater kit had so much vibration in the handle that my hand would go numb. Why on earth would I recommend that kit to someone else after having that kind of experience with it? I'm fully transparent jin lim

This is too much. I don’t know how anyone can compare a Backwater to a Thai kit and say the Thai kit is a better product. I’ve ran Backwater products since 2013 and I’ve encountered a handful of people in that time who said Thai kit was just as capable as a Backwater. Those people are FOS. Now a Thai kit may very well be faster, but you’re running in water deep enough for an outboard anyways. Run the outboard if you want speed. Your Thai kit is going to go to pieces when actually subjected to an environment meant for a mud motor. Too many people have had positive experiences with Backwater. I truly question the intelligence of anyone who makes the claim that any of the Thai kits are overall superior to the Backwater it.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I do speed tests in open water because its where most people start from. Not everyone starts in the rough. Most have at least a mile run before starting to work their way into their spot. Testing it in the same spot, in open water, gives all the mud motors the same environment with as little variants as possible. It keeps the tests fair. Speed plays a big part when people are looking for mud motors. If I'm getting 15mph with the backwater and my hunting buddy is going 20+ with his swamp runner, it's like being tied to a dock. The swamp runner isn't "going to pieces" when I need to use it as a mud motor. If you've experienced that, then inform me of it, but you're trashing one product and being very biased of another. The parts of a backwater kit are quality parts, but costing double or triple the price of a swamp runner, I would expect the backwater to perform better, if not two or three times better, but yet it vibrates more than the thai kits and is also slower.
