i used to think that i was a "retro gamer" at heart but the recent releases in the JRPG space have completely turned me around. Make no mistake, I'm still planning to finish Koudelka soon, but it's overwhelming how spoiled we've become with all the 2023 and 2024 releases in this space.

Absolutely loving this channel. You keep me up to date on a plethora of upcoming RPGs, as well as bringing new games to my attention that I may have never come to discover otherwise. Currently playing Unicorn Overlord and been waiting over 3 years for Eiyuden to release. Not much longer now!

At 32 I’m so grateful to be a JRPG fan during this era…feels like I’m living through another golden age . I somehow missed bloomtown but everything else i already planned to get. Thanks for another informative and well put together video TKN!

The unicorn overlord demo is basically the fully unlocked game with an 8 hour timer, and progress carries over, so there was no reason to wait. I also didn't find out until yesterday and the game is out and I'm playing the full game now, but I wish I would have started with the demo a week ago.

Ys 10 being big and more open would be a welcome change after Ys 9. Looking forward to that one for sure.

Reynatis is also a lesson I wont learn from if its mediocre either haha! Furyu games for whatever reason always draw me in, they do things in ways that just appeal to my JRPG interests whether they fully flesh out what they are intending or not. There is so much to work with here and all of these are on the must buy list especially if they have a physical release which thankfully most do. Thanks for showcasing these TKN!

My copy of Unicorn overlord arrived, but has to wait for Persona 3 and FF7 Rebirth. We’re spoiled for choice this year.

Unicorn Overlord is so good. I hope you like it. Ys X is definitely the one I'm looking forward to the most this year (Ok, I might be slightly more pumped for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, but it's a close race). So many good RPGs on the horizon. It looks like it's going to be a good year for gaming, if nothing else.

I don’t believe the PS5 is in its last stage of life cycle lol

I recently went back to console gaming primarily just for the ability to buy physical discs. I don't like the idea of companies going back and editing out things like Square-Enix did with Remake. While that change isn't anything I actually care about, it sets a precedent. I just don't trust video game companies anymore for many, many reasons. As for JRPGs I'm looking forward to, Dragon's Dogma 2 is probably my most anticipated. Visions of Mana and Metaphor: ReFantazio would be the next in line after that.

Wonderful list! I share many of your picks: I haven't gotten to it yet, but Unicorn Overlord looks amazing. Suikoden I and II are masterpieces (that I've beaten many times each) and you're in for a treat! I hope to revisit them again soon, but haven't gotten to yet. I've been a mana fan for over 30 years, it was probably the JRPG (Secret of Mana) that made me fall in love with RPGs as a kid. Must-buy for me. You just put Bloomtown and Metaphor on my radar. Both look amazing! Trails goes without saying, and finally, Eiyuden is the one I'm most excited for. I backed it immediately, and if it gives me the feeling the original 2 Suikodens did, or anything like those adventures, I'm very ready for it!

Even though we haven't seen anything yet I look forward to the third Death end re;Quest game which was announced for summer 24. The second game was still a bit rough but a clear improvement over the first and while everything else from Compile Hearts is not my cup of tea this series somehow got me. JRPGs with horror influeuences are kinda rare, so I hope this series doesn't die yet.

Most excited for Kuro and Ys. Suikoden is a series I missed out on back in the day and became way too expensive so I’m excited I’ll finally get to play it.

Its such a great year my three top anticipated are YS Nordic, Trails through Daybreak and Metaphor re:Fantazio there my holy trinity of JRPGs this year but thinking about 2024 were spoiled for choice on the genre

On a side note, I'm super excited to finally get to play Tokyo Xanadu ex for the Switch. It'll be out this June. Also I loved Shin Megami Tensei 5 and I really wanted to jump back into it so I'm also getting the SMT5 Vengeance release in June as well.

Referring to the PS5, “I don’t really have the desire to purchase a console that’s in its final years of life cycle…” You’ll have to explain this one cause I really don’t think we’re anywhere close to the PS5’s “final years.” As of today, the system isn’t even 3.5 yrs old. Although the “average” lifespan for most consoles is 5 years, that average has been trending up. If something like the Switch can be stretched to 7 years, the PS4 (which I still seeing new releases) can go for 10+, the PS5-which spent two years in short supply, amidst a game industry that often spends half a decade developing titles-probably has many, many more years of life left before the PS6 is eventually released.

Bloomtown looks so good. Another that I'm quite hype for this year it's "SacriFire". :)

2023 maybe have been the best year for games in recent memory. But 2024 is the year of the RPG! Thanks for reminding me how great it'll be dude.

I'm definitely most hyped for Ys 10 in english too. I already played it imported from japan on Switch but I'll be looking forward to playing it on my beast of a PC in full english being able to fully immerse into the story just as much as the gameplay this time!

Quick tip when writing a script or talking about a series that has a number two entry in it, avoid using the word too because it can easily get confused with two, use words like as well or also instead, because when you said it has elements of persona too I thought you were saying it has elements of person two, so while that may in written form it doesn't when you were just hearing the words

The only disappointing title is YS X which is downgraded from 8 and even 9... 😢 (I played Asian ver last year and 100% completed) From a diehard YS fan😂

I picked up Unicorn Overlord but it has to wait. I'm currently playing Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen. Most of the games you showed here are on my list as well. I'm also excited for Dragons Dogma II and the Legend of Legacy remaster.

Daybreak is my game of the year. Just playing Rebirth and enjoying it. Replaying Suikoden is also something I'm looking forward too. Not so sure about eiyuden but very sure about Deca Police. This year is actually doable - I love it :D

It’s interesting how Korean developers are also working on DokeV, a highly stylized Pokémon game. Noticing a parallel in their design aesthetic when it comes to graphics and fashion on the characters they create. It kinda looks like stellar blade was made in the same engine.

I LOVED Suikoden 2. I have so many fond memories of it as a kid. I'm not full of hope because Konami sucks lately but I'm crossing my fingers.

I’m really excited for July. I get to get into the Calvard Ark of Trails through Daybreak.

For real man this is year is stacked for jrpg it’s insane man. Unicorn overlord is great just from playing the demo I’m now convinced to play it later on. Like summer alone has 3 games waiting to be played for me being trails through daybreak, SMT V, Tsukihime, and Elden ring shadow of the edtree (ik the last two ain’t jrpgs but cmon). Then come fall there’s gonna be Persona 3 DLC, Ys X and metaphor rephantazio. Like theres too much I’ll have to cut down on which I plan on playing and sadly the only one I can think of is SMT V since I already played the switch release. Now watching your video has reminded me of both eiyuden and suikoden remaster. Let me just say this I haven’t played suikoden 2 yet but I’ve played 1 and from what I remembered it was already a fun game to me so I might have to pick it up again. And also with stellar blade I might have to look into it later too cause that actually looks pretty cool.

This game list makes my backlog even more daunting, but I'm excited to dive into each title...😂

I always wanted to get into YS, I’m LOVING the style and the ship combat has me hooked. Would I have to play the first couple considering this game seems to be after YS 2? Or could I get into this one first since it’s an early adventure for the MC?

Really nice video for someone like me who likes RPG (and particularly JRPGs) but is not that knowledgeable ouside of the more mainstream titles and want to get more into the genre. On a side note regarding the PS5, the console came out in late 2020, taking the general 7years life span of consoles and the pandemic into account i wouldn't be surprised if the next generation come out in 2028. But i understand not wanting to buy a console specifically for a couple games though.

My anticipated game this year is Kai no Kiseki, hopefully Falcom will give us updates this month

Whenever something has "A different xyz" I instantly feel it's gonna end up being very samey. That being said, Bloomtown looks very neat.

I only have 4 games on must play list for this year: Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Trails Through Daybreak, and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (I never played the original switch version, heard it ran sluggish on the hardware so I held out for a possible playstation port). I want to try and make some headway on my backlog this year with XC3 and the Ys games taking the focus. That's the only reason Ys X isn't on that must play list, I've only played Ys IX before and I want to see how many of the previous games I can get through

Have you ever played the inazuma eleven games? As a fellow football and jrpg fan, seems like a no brainer. I only bring it up as a new game in the series is potentially coming this year.

Such a grand year for JRPGs... There's also Shin Megami Tensei Vengeance, Dragon's Dogma 2, the Elden Ring Expansion... I hope you get into the Yakuza series through 0! As I've been playing Yakuza 8 (powerful GOTY contender!) there have been many times where I've thought about the great journey it has been from 0 to 8. This series has that great feeling of a BIG interconnected story being told through many games. Though more episodic than something like Trails (esp. with the first few games), the continuity still adds a lot of gravity and emotion to each installment.

This should be very interesting to me as I normally don't keep up much with upcoming game. Got too much to play already. I say that, but I am actually aware of a high number of the games in this list. I am very excited for Visions of Mana. The Trials of Mana remake was a great comeback for the series, and I hope that can keep that rolling. Personally I didn't like Suikoden 1 that much, so I can't say I'm super excited for the remasters or Eiyuuden. But I've always meant to give the series another shot, so I am cautiously optimistic. I've said before I'm so far behind in Trails that I don't get excited for new entries. But I do intend to play through Zero and Azure this year. Cards RPG is one I actually had not heard of. But I am interested - I like deckbuilding when it isn't rogulike. Definitely getting Stellar Blade *if* it comes to PC one day. And oh man, I cannot wait for Ys X. Probably my favorite JRPG series going right now what with the latest Atelier games dropping the ball hard IMO. The rest I don't think I'm all that interested in. Maybe the Furyu game, but they disappoint me every time.

Y's X is my most anticipated game of this year by far.

I am playing Unicorn Overlord right now, and it might just be the best strategy RPG I have ever played. I can't say for sure since I am only 10 hours in, but the fact that I could not put it down and nothing in it feel tedious is amazing lol. The world map you walk over gives depth and a sense of immersion to the game, unlike most strat games where it's just click a node. The combat and gameplay systems are the perfect balance of easy to pick up and fun/hard to master for that good strategy feeling. For the negatives, the story is kind of meh so far, but it might get more interesting. I kind of doubt it though since it's just a war story with just humanoids, so It's nothing special or unique. The other small problem might be there is quite a bit of enemy class variety, but it seems like it's just going to be just human who share the same classes as you. So it doesn't look like there will be any interesting, unique fights or boss fights. But again both these negatives are based off someone who has basically ignored the main story quest and has just run around exploring so far lol. Maybe shit hits the fan and everything get way more interesting as the game progresses. Regardless, the foundation of the game is enough for me to be thinking of it non-stop even while I am not playing it. Which is always the sign of a great game!

I think daybreak is out on July 5th and I will not play reverie until a few weeks before daybreak is out.

I'm not sure how I feel about Ys X, as I personally do not like Adol. I was able to enjoy VIII and IX because of all the other party member options, so having that removed is probably not going to be my cup of tea.

Hey man, you need to play FF7 Rebirth. I hope it comes to PC soon so you can play it but that is the best Final Fantasy game since FF10. It has everything that makes Final Fantasy special and then some. It’s got the highest rating in Metacritic for any game this year and is imo my GOTY as nothing is touching this. Anyways keep making awesome vids man

I really like the idea of remastered versions. Back in the 80s and 90s when the internet was still in it's infancy and people still didn't share informations online, a lot of games success was dependant on good marketing. A lot of gems like Suikoden went unnoticed. Now with the internet people are sharing their favorite games with each other, putting them on the spotlight. So game developers can now create the reveniew they missed out on back then despite having created a great game. And if it sells well, the series might even be continued. It's a win-win situation for both parties. Game developers can get more money out of their games and even make a long running series out of it and players get new exciting games out of an old, beloved series.

DAYBREAK DAYBREAK DAYBREAK!!! A-ahem! Yeah, Trails Through Daybreak is THE JRPG that I'm looking forward to playing this year and most likely will be the GOTY for me even among all the banger JRPG's we're getting this year. I just love the Trails series and something tells me I'll love this one just like the others. Hmm, MAYBE I'll try Stellar Blade. It looks fun but the story being really short and it giving me some Souls like vibes thus super difficult is worrying me. Of course Mario Thousand Year Door is a childhood classic for me so I'll probably cop that one too, if not Day 1 definitely one day after. The next Neptunia title that's coming out soon is another JRPG I'm excited to play. Been with Nep Nep since Day 1 and I've always loved her and her friends wacky adventures and antics so I'm ready for more! ^_^
