Thanks for making this review. This was legitimate one of my favorite true reviews. Did a review without a beefed up MacBook making it more realistic to us consumers. Hard to trust reviews when people are pushing the top of the product vs the entry level base model.

I’ve had a 12” G4 PowerBook and now use a 15” mid 2012 MacBook. The screen size is great on the 15” for every day single screen use, 12” was too small. This 14” looks a good balance between size and portability, especially with the higher resolution than the 15”.

Hi! I am a graphic and web designer, and soon I am going to train in UX/UI. I have a MacBook Pro 13” from 2016 that I am looking forward to upgrading because it is too slow, noisy and gets very hot. A few months ago I was able to test the 14” and 16” M1 Pro for a few days, both with 10c/16c/16Gb/1Tb, and the truth is that they worked really well. What I am going to use the most is going to be the Adobe design suite, Figma, specifically Premiere or FCPX for something normal (4K with 1 or 2 layers, some color correction and some transition), some RAW photo development of a 26mpx APS-C in Capture One and video calls with Zoom. Do you think that with these models I have equipment for 3/4 years? It's that on Amazon they are usually discounted, and I have even seen the 14” 8c/14c/16Gb/512Gb for €1,995 currently, but I don't know if it will fall short of power. The idea is not to think too much in the future and use it rather 3/4 years, since I think that Apple's processors by then will have improved a lot. Let's see if you can give me your opinion, based on your experience, to go for the base 14” or jump to the 16” with which I would gain screen and battery, although I will do the big jobs with a 4K monitor. Hey Lee. New to the channel. But your initial review in the 14” Pro was a game changer. No filler just to the point. If 16 gb of RAM is enough for photo editing in Lightroom. What would be a better use case for getting a 32 gb computer.

It definitely is enough for photos. The only reason you’d want a 32GB RAM model is if you are merging a lot of 40 megapixel+ panoramic shots or if you are working on video.

If ever I'm doing photo stacking with say 50 RAW images and I send them as layers to Photoshop to then process, I quickly go over 16GB - easily in the low 20GBs. Even still with the speed of the SSDs on these things it shouldn't be an issue as once Ps loads I can just close down Lr. 32 is a must if you're video editing though.

It has dedicated hardware support for video processing. So it's not true that it will be as fast as it is in video editing.

I upgraded from a 2012 retina 15” to the 16” M1 Pro and I’m loving it. It’s a big upgrade for me. I’m very happy with the screen quality. I use Final Cut Pro for video editing 4K HDR Dolby Vision and I don’t hear any fans.

If you start putting a lot of effects on it will start to lag out. I would recommend higher gpu cores if you are doing more advanced editing with NR and Effects

@@LeeZavitz what do you think about this scenario but if you use proxies? I use proxies in my 4K workflow always because I use lots of MotionVFX plugins. I tried the M1 Mac mini last year and it was subpar for those tools but many weren’t yet optimized. I’m trying to save some cash, so for me it’s down to the $2499 16” with 10/32 cores or the $3499 m1 max woth 10/32 cores. I won’t do a custom order so it’s a $1000 difference for more cores, more ram and more drive space. Just can’t tell if I “need” it 🤔

@Lee Zavitz Do you run your monitor in native 4k resolution? And could you check how de m1 pro performs in 'looks like' 1440 scaling on an 4k monitor? I'm coming from an m1 air which is very sluggish when scaling on an 4k monitor. Especially when editing photos.

I got the 14 inch MacBook pro a few days ago and for the first time I can confidently edit in LR on a scaled 4k screen. Even brushes and spot removal work totally fluid. Needs tons of RAM though. I got 32GB and it still swaps a little bit.

Just a warning. I purchased a 14" Macbook Pro M1 Pro and absolutely loved it. But I returned it 10 days after purchase. The reason? Well it really isn't the machine's fault, but the reason was lack of drivers for peripherals. I have a perfectly good Canon MG6120 printer. It works great, but there are no drivers for the latest Mac OS. You say, well John you could run an earlier version of Mac OS or you could go shell out just a couple of hundred $$ more for a new printer. I already shelled out $$ for a docking station to have all of the ports I need,. But that is the point! Why should I buy the latest and greatest and still have to spend more money for other new equipment or settle for an OS that was not optimized for this beast of a machine.

Will this base model last at least 5-6 years? Want to buy it, but it’s pricey, so I want to make sure it’ll still perform alright in 5 years time. I don’t edit 8k or anything, max I’d do is 4K. I’m curious if your editing test on the 14” would’ve worked if you dropped the timing resolution to 1080? I know it’s 6k red raw but I’m trying to gauge how well this computer would run of using 4K and occasional 8k (from Sony A1) proxies.

If you drop it to 1080p it’s a little better but once you add 3 layers and colour and effects it starts to lag out. It does pretty well though considering what it is vs what you use to need to even run 6k raw video only 2 years ago

Depends on what you’re editing. Try a couple streams of 4K and a handful of motionvfx plugin effects and the M1 grinds to a halt, even using proxies. Anything with various effects and transitions really stressed the M1 in my experience.

I have a very important question for you: I don't know if I should get the m1 max or the m1pro since I mainly edit 10bit 4 k Multicam with the Multicam Funktion in premiere pro. my old MacBook could handle Multicam only with proxies and I don't like the workflow with proxies. So my question is if the base model will be enough for these Multicam edits, as they are quite hard on systems. I don't know what to do :((

I don't own one of these (yet) but from seeing a million reviews I think it is safe to safe that the M1 Pro should be enough. The differences in Video editing, especially 4K were not that big. But you might to upgrade to 32GB of unified memory if that is possible for you. I also edit 10 bit 4k footage (Fujifilm FLOG)) and I'm getting the base 16" with 1TB which is going to be plenty.

i don't know why I'm getting such bad battery life with my base model. it drains like 15% in sleep mode. Only installed microsoft office until now.

I work off external drives because I jump between computers a lot. For me 256gb is enough lol. But for most people 512 or 1TB should be good

@@LeeZavitz keep in mind that ssd speeds dramatically increase as well when you go for more storage (e.g. swap memory performance).1-2TB would be the sweet spot probably

Utilize external drives or cloud storage. I edited wedding photos on a 64GB iPad for 2 years. I would should 30-40GB on what event. All you need is enough local storage to upload the photos and get them in the cloud. Lightroom cloud is also great because I can access and edit all of my photos from my phone, iPad, MacBook, or any computer that has internet access.

It seems a very valuable, you need to hold two MacBooks, one is for fun, like web browsing, chat and something like that, sure Air will be the right choice, and another one for video editing, and it is the Pro model.

In Premiere I’ve noticed I loose about 1 percent per minute. I’ve seen some reviews RAVING about the battery life on this Mac, it really isn’t that impressive. As you said, however, for web browsing it does last a while.

It’s in the settings for your keyboard. I noticed that those buttons were missing on the keyboard. Use to be able to change them right on the keyboard

Yes, it’s still my main laptop. I would recommend it. You can probably find them cheaper than it was new. The m2 MacBook Pro doesn’t give a huge advantage over this

I think all the high speed data transfer between drives and card reader just dummied the battery. It must draw a lot of power and it’s not really an Optimization thing

Is this base model good enough to play Classic WoW or should I get more cpu/gpu/ram? I’m currently on a 2018 Lenovo device with 1050ti graphics card so I assume this must be better?

It's amusing and gratifying, the lengths reviewers must go to bog down the base 14" M1 Pro. By the time they succeed, they're down to relevance for maybe 5% of their viewers. Who, as this reviewer notes, can simply spec up the 14" or just get the 16".

I don’t think this is the best choice compared to the 16 inch Pro model. Go look at the thermal videos. This one gets extremely hot while the 16 inch barely has one side of the fan even on.

They mostly do video rendering test becouse they don't know anything else. What you want from video editors and photographers.

Either you’ve never used a MacBook Pro with a 720p web camera or you need your eyes checked because the new MacBook Pro’s 1080p web camera is much better than the old 720p so stop putting out misleading information because it tarnishes your entire videos credibility.
