Glad to hear you said the left/right positioning screwed with your head as it did the same to me. Loved the Mamiya though I used a C3, though it is like a tank to carry around. Great comments.

Thank you David! It's still confusing me when look through the viewfinder when I haven't used in a while, but nevertheless it's an awesome camera!

I have used the Mamiya C-330 for over 20 years photographing weddings and portraits. When I needed to raise the height of the waist level finder I used a stool. A good living was earned in those years. One thing I especially liked was being able to see the flash while taking the photo.

I picked up a prism finder two years ago and that makes things much easier.

This is a very late comment, but given all the detriments you mention regarding this camera, I can only say that the iPhone is your best bet. This, as it says, is a Professional camera. It needs a thinking mind behind it, not a spray and pray type. This is also not the street photography camera, if it is not nimble. The iPhone or Google phone definitely are. But from every example I have seen on Flickr and elsewhere, the lenses are amazing and the photos are luscious. I would like to have one for landscape photography. However, watching this video, most people might think this camera is not worth using. BTW, the first three pictures you shot with it are fantastic. That's what this camera does best, slow and deliberate. Photographing people on the move is not it's forte.

I never bought this camera with street photography in mind. Last Sunday I uploaded a video sharing my experience with the C330 three years after I picked it up.

The viewing hood has a (non optical) sports finder that can be configured. If you prefocus, you can look horizontally through it to approximate the boundaries of the composition. You can also hold the camera up side down and over your head, looking up to compose from a higher perspective, such as over the heads of a crowd at an event. It's not unlike using it as a periscope. How could you stop down the aperture and under expose a whole roll of film. Was the light that consistent that you never needed to adjust it. Were you controlling EV with just the shutter speed? I'm always adjusting my aperture through out the exposure of a roll of film to modify the depth of field options, to sharpen or blur what's in focus, before and behind the subject, to improve composition.

An interesting alternative is a "sleeper": the Minolta Autocord with the well respected Rokkor lens. Weighing 1100g (about 500$), the Autocord is considerably lighter (600g or 1lb 5oz). The Mamiya 330 is not as well built as the Autocord. Focus is with a lever rather than a knob. While not as well built as the Rolleiflex (3,5x and 2.8x), an Autocord is easier to use: the right hand can focus and change shutter speed/aperture, leaving the left hand free.

I focus with the waist level finder on the groundglass, then compose and shoot by framing with the sports finder. Quick and easy.

For eye-level photos with that camera there are a couple of options. First, Mamiya made a prism finder for that camera, so if you can find one that would be the best solution. The other option would be to zone focus and use the sports finder.
@therealsirrobin
@therealsirrobin 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mark! I know about the prism finder but it makes the camera heavier than it already is and focusing becomes a little harder as well. I tend to shoot wide open and then the sports finder is no option for close up portraits. 👍

There are already a lot of videos regarding that topic here on KZfaq, but maybe I'll one too. However, I am definitely planing a video on how to develop Kodak motion picture film which is very simple and people should these films only because of the amazing results I've seen so far.

The waistlevel finder on that camera has a sportfinder mode; just flip down the inside of the front (top) plate. Instant viewfinder! I've shot basketball with that camera.

Hello Brad! I know but it's not very usable for shooting at closer range if I need thr focus to be spot on. Anyway, a prism finder will be added to my collection very soon! ☺️

I've flipped the camera before to get a higher view point but that's a bit awkward and I'm sure on the streets you'll get even more looks. So you look UP into the viewfinder. I did it with the Hasselblad thought but I am sure its similar.
@therealsirrobin
@therealsirrobin 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is very awkward and wouldn't be a solution for me. It's simply a downside of TLRs with one has to live with. :D

Strong challenge with some good results. You did well. How about a Zenit B camera (my first SLR) with some really slow film, maybe 25ASA (ISO) for a future challenge?
@therealsirrobin

Thank you Paul! It depends on what I am going for but I think 25ASA might be a little to slow for what I am usually shooting. But who knows... 😁

When taking eye-level shots, why didn't you use the sports finder the camera has? Yes it requires pre-focusing or using a focus range, but it allows you to even do sports photography with this "small" baby.
@therealsirrobin
@therealsirrobin 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Axel! Yes, that would be an option but when shooting in the range of 1-2m the focus would be all over the place. However as far as I know there is a different viewfinder available that one might solve the problem.
@kstrohmeier
@kstrohmeier 7 жыл бұрын
You could also hold the camera up side down and look up into the view finder. Pre-focusing or zone focusing would help.

I'm wondering if a cine still type film could be an option for the project. However I don't know if you get some of these in 120 Format. In the 135 Range the xpan - cine still combo would be a blast !
