14 ways you are hurting your dog without realizing it.
In this guide, we've provided you with a few things that seem right but actually ends up harming your pets either physically or emotionally and you should do well to avoid them at all costs.
Exposing them to strong smells
How do you feel when you're in the same room with someone wearing excessive perfume? I guess irritated or probably nauseated.
Dogs have about a 1000-10,000 of your ability to perceive scents. Now think how much nauseated they will feel when sprayed with a perfume or brought close to a particularly strong smelling substance.
It wouldn’t feel pleasant at all. As such you may want to protect your pet from your perfume and any other strong smelling chemicals as much as possible.
Letting them eat everything
Giving dogs human food is among the top ways most dog owners harm their pet thinking they are actually caring for it.
Your dog’s alimentary canal is quite different from yours just as its nutritional requirements are different. Most times the foods you eat are too spicy, too fatty or too salty for your dog.
Lack of routine and rules
Routines and rules are very important because dogs have an internal clock. They give structure and a sense of ‘what-to-do-next’ to your pet.
Take for instance; if you feed your dog after ringing a bell every day for a few weeks, your dog will start salivating at the sound of the bell even when the food is not yet in sight. This is actually called the Pavlov dog experiment.
Patting their heads
This is one thing dog owners do that irritates their pets more than they can imagine. Think about it; how many times have you really liked it when someone reaches out and patted you on the head suddenly? My guess is you can’t think of such an instance.
Being patted on the head whether lovingly or not is something most of us never really enjoy.
Skipping flea, tick and worming treatment
Preventive your dog from flea, tick, worm, and heartworm is very important. This can be lesser of an issue in the winter time, but you should definitely talk to a vet to keep your dog safe in the warmer months of the year.
Leaving them alone in the car
Never ever leave your dog alone in the car with the windows closed. Researches have shown that the temperature within a closed car can rise often as high as 20 degree in every 10 minutes!
Unlike us, dogs do not sweat and become very uncomfortable in such an environment.
Neglecting their teeth
The teeth are an important part of your dog’s body.
Their teeth are often home to hundreds of bacteria and need to be brushed just like yours do. Seriously, taking care of your dog’s teeth should go beyond the chewing sticks most dog owners are accustomed to giving to their pets.
Taking the little puppy to a dog park
It’s a good thing to take your pet to the park once in a while. This allows it to mingle with its own species and not feel like it is the only one left in the world.
In as such as this is a good for your dog, you shouldn’t forget that dogs can be passive carriers of diseases. This can easily be transferred to your pet. Also, if you're visiting a park with your little puppy, you may want to keep an eye on it as larger dogs often are rough while playing and may end up harming your little pet.
Using physical punishments
It’s good you discipline your pet but physical punishment should never be the way you do. For one, physically punishing your pet constitutes animal abuse.
Secondly, physical punishment doesn’t really work when it comes to disciplining a pet. It only makes your pet afraid of you.
Yelling
Yelling is never a great way to discipline your dog. If you yell at your dog when it does something bad, it may act all timid but will be unrepentant. This is because yelling actually scares it and does not tell your dog what it did wrong. Your dog may assume you are just angry hence the timid behavior to protect itself.
Neglecting breed-specific health issues
Certain dogs breeds require specific care for their skin, ear or fur.
Some other breeds are prone to certain health issues and you should make sure to have an eye out for them. For example, Dobermans, in addition to heart muscle failure, are prone to ventricular arrhythmias. Make sure to talk with your vet to discuss the breed-specific health issues
Not socializing your dog with other dogs and people
Thorough socialization is very important for dog’s health and behavior.
Lack of socializations results in release of adrenaline hormones that increase dog’s blood pressure and heart rate in any unfamiliar situation.
Dogs who don’t socialize can have anxiety about anything that’s unfamiliar.
Too much food
If you often keep your dog’s bowl filled, you may be putting your dog in the risk of obesity. Dogs are expert at acting like they’re starving all the time. Don’t fall for their whining

most of it wasn't true actually it's not rocket science you have to do your homework dogs are important they look to us to care for them and they can be invaluable to us in many ways and every way in my opinion you have to care enough to do the work to figure it out I mean example dog food 6 years ago there was no such thing as dog foodbut they saw a need and decided there was a market for this and they can make a lot of money and they begin with the commercials through just false information have led the vast majority of people to believe the dog food is good for dogs but it is soit's worse than the equivalent of living a life on fast food if not southern fried food everything for your entire life and then mucking it up 10 times over... Dogs aren't vegetarians that's just STUPID & IGNORANT ! 😵 But if they were in the wild that they were not domesticated for generations what would they eat? Not rocket science! And before they started making dog food just less than a hundred years ago our dogs were part of our family even are extended family even going on vacations to work even to war with us and what date was what we fed them as our leftovers on the regularmind you I'm not talking about today's world where you might think that fast food everyday or that southern fried everything would be okay I'm talkin about good hearty home cook meals everything made from scratch everything farmed everything natural no such thing as GMO anything or modified in anyway no damn medication Fed orwhatever I'm talking about yeah they got the scraps from hunting trips maybe squirrels maybe deer but if they still hungry after we gave him the scraps then they went hunting and caught them something and they ate the whole damn thing they didn't say oh I can't eat the bones.. different world SMH drive me crazy just saying

some of them like to have their head pet when they are in the mood for it and trust you and you also do it the right way. If you just walk up to them, reach down from above and put your hand on their head they usually don´t like that as it appears threatening to them so this is not entirely wrong. My dog will let about four people he loves touch his head and enjoy it but he will literally lose his shit if anybody else tries to bend over him or reach for him like that. also sadly, a lot of dog owners seem to have very bad rapport with their dog and have no idea when the dog is feeling uncomfortable. i see people trying to pet their own dog all the time, not even realizing thet the dog hates it.

There are a lot of things different between me and my dogs: They like to roll in smelly stuff; I don't. . . they like to eat cat droppings - I don't. . . they like to sniff butts; I don't. So comparing what I feel about being touched wherever with what my dog feels about it isn't a good comparison either.

A lot of the human food they showed, like fish and beef, is actually really good for dogs... Most dog food is corn and wheat and not healthy for dogs. And those dogs are being petted, NOT patted. Petting feels amazing for dogs and humans. So a lot of this is either BS or common sense-we all know skipping treatments or leaving them in cars is dangerous, this isn't new info

Patting your dogs head is fine as long as they enjoy it! telling them no in a firm manner is fine (that maybe a little shouty) loud nosies like a clap is a good way of disciplining your dog. Shouting at them all the time is not a good method, you wouldn’t shout at a child constantly! Also if a dog doesn’t like you brushing their teeth don’t do it! Doing things they don’t like can cause them stress, instead use plastic toys that squeak with soft spikes on them as are really good for dental hygiene as long as you wash them, and dental sticks they’ve been really helpful! Also don’t wash your dog all the time you’re destroying the natural oils in its skin, and that can make them have bad skin making them smell more! You only really need to wash them with warm water if they are dirty, that’s a massive one they missed out!

It does on a case by case basis. All these comments talking about it being bs are ignorant of the subject. Dogs, in general, DO NOT LIKE the TOP of their heads being scratched or touched. The VET is petting the animal the right way, by placing a hand along the chin (canines LOVES their chin being scratched or held) and a quick petting from the FRONT to BACK. Notice that the canine can still see her hand by glancing up. Dogs are extremely uncomfortable, my canine reacts to this by tilting his head upward to exposed his chin or chest (two areas that all dogs really loves)

If you approach them with a scratch under the chin. it is showing that you are not bigger than them and that you are not a threat. After you have done that you may slowly proceed to the head. So its ok to pet them only if its not in a threatening way

Socialize your dogs while they’re young kids! My rescue dog is 6 years old and her original owner did not socialize her , so now she’s scared of everyone and everything. It took her an entire month to warm up to my mom who she saw almost everyday. Socialize them before they get too old!

During last year I was staying with my family and our two cocker spaniels. Probably the longest I’ve been with my family and I formed a very close bond to one of the dogs, Tia. She slept with me most night and got jealous if I gave too much attention to our other dog Ollie. One night I didn’t want her sleeping with me so I shut her out the room. she sat outside ages, then she went downstairs. Next morning I went to greet both dogs and Tia looked at me then turn around and walked away and ignored me. She was being very sassy and I knew she was angry at me. But I’m my defensive we had an issue of fleas around the same time.

9 and 10 is very true. Specially with rescue dogs. You got make them feel that you love them and let them know it's okay instead of yelling or spanking them when they do something wrong. Then my family always wonders why they don't love them the most. Um because you do this. I would say tell them Sammy. And she would then I continued her routine with me. If I was not in the house she would have never came back from running away. Love you pumpkin.:) Miss you. I miss my walking and lovely buddy.

Patting or petting your dogs head comes down to a matter of trust. If your dog trusts you he or she will welcome and actually crave your touch , especially on their head and ears. Also , every dog I’ve ever interacted with simply love a good firm scratching anywhere on the very top of their back from their neck all the way to where their tail begins. The whole length of their back is an area they can’t ever scratch on their own. Do your dog a huge favor and give he/she a good back scratching when your giving them attention.

You socialize your dog with other dogs that you know are vaccinated and disease free. For example dog walking groups, puppy school or dog day care. Taking them to a dog park can be risky, your dog can contract parasites and diseases . If its a puppy, you are risking it's life. Some dog owners are poor and can't afford vaccinations or worming/flea or tick medications. Some dog owners can't recognize when their dog is sick but still take their dog to the park anyway. Some owners have untrained dominant dogs that are aggressive.

Vanitha My guess is that a dog’s brain interprets what he smells similarly to how our brain interprets what we see. For example, I might see something hideously ugly, but it doesn’t actually hurt me to look at it, and I’m usually kind of interested in it. If a dog’s brain interpreted smells like we do, the ability to smell 1000X better would drive the creature insane. They’d be completely incapable of functioning in this world. However, I never saw any of my dogs appear particularly bothered by a smell. Now cats...they’re bothered by everything. But not dogs.

We babysit a golden retriever and he loves head pats. If you pet his head for a bit he just starts to melt. He leans into you and then just slowly sinks to the floor and if you keep doing it he falls asleep. If you stop at any point before he's asleep though he'll look back at you with a "hey who told you to stop" look on his face.

I give a little yell or mad noise when my dog does something I don’t like. When she says dogs don’t know what you’re saying , that’s just not true. They won’t know if you get mad 10 minutes later, but if they’re in the middle of the act, giving them a stern “No!” Kinda madly, they back off what they’re doing, THEN you praise them for stopping. You don’t just get mad and stay mad, but you should follow up anger with love so that your dog realizes her human isnt just mad, her human just doesn’t like when I do xyz
