Ted Park send in this tricky little Mul-t-lock interactive core with a note saying this "batch" was significantly more difficult to pick for some reason. It definitely WAS and upon gutting, I found.... well, check out the video...😀

That would be an anti-bump pin, it is a D cut though I think I have seen references to a C cut before. It has been around for years.

They’re called split pins. Designed years ago to make it more difficult to pick. The chambers on the side of the plug are for side pins. Usually reserved for master keying.

so I went to a locksmith today to find some new locks, talked to a guy who worked in the business over 50 years. He insisted that these have NEVER been picked. also had no clue what a serrated pin was or that they existed. And the horror story: master lock was their high security padlock.

Your lock has much more difficult bitting than the one I worked on, I had one with a very deep cut, but mine was on the last pin. I had purchased the SpooXe pick kit, and I was able to use only picks from that kit without modification to open the lock. If you examine the inner pins and the countermilling on the inside of the outer pins, you can see how it would be problematic if you overset the inner pins. Furthermore, if you look at the inner pin on the driver side, there's a groove that fits into the countermilling on the outer pin. I actually hadn't checked the bitting on the key before I sent that one to you, that one had the distinction of being the first lock I grabbed. I didn't know about the two part key pins. I hadn't disassembled my lock, I had assumed it was like the other "hard" Mul-T-Lock locks I had opened and left it at that. Thanks for making such a great video! You took far less time to open that lock type than I did, and the lock you have has much harder bitting. Your video is both entertaining and informative, congratulations on that open!

You have a D5 in the 4th chamber and A1 in the 5th, I thought there was a 2 MACS so the deepest outside pin should be a C. I could be wrong on this. It looks to be an authentic card so unless the factory messed up I don't know what to say. I'm a Mul-t lock dealer but only service one, once or twice a year. That " telescoping key is new to me as well as the C pin in the 3rd chamber. Could be a little different being a padlock cylinder.

Those two circles nearer by side near the bow of the key, are they magnets? If not, what are they for?
@PeregrineBF
@PeregrineBF 5 жыл бұрын
Not magnets. They're the floating element. The one in line with the rest of the dimples interacts with the pin stack like a normal dimple, but it's connected to the other one - the other one gets pressed by a special profile pin inside the lock. That raises them up pushing the corresponding pin stack higher than would otherwise be possible. Basically it's a little lever in the key that gets moved into position by the lock.

@penfold7800

They are the 'interactve' pins in the key itself, I think they act on ball-bearings in the Bible that if they're not freed by the key will bind up the core and prevent it from turning.

Have you tried picking it with a dimple lock set? Because they seem like they would respond better to a set specifically built around being able to rotate better like the sparrows black flag set.
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 5 жыл бұрын
The pick I was using is from the Souber Mul-t-lock pick set, designed specifically FOR this type of lock. The pin-in-pin design is unique and requires specialized tools to open. I DO have a set of Black Flags but they are too large for the keyway and too thick to access just the inner pins. They are designed for traditional dimple locks, not pin-in-pins, sorry.
@tactrix1h
@tactrix1h 5 жыл бұрын
@@bosnianbill it's all good, it just sounded like the problems with maneuverability were exactly the kind that dimple locks typically had where you couldn't really turn at all because the keyway is so narrow and the pick isn't typically rounded. 🙂
