Thank you, I like to make sure that we have the resources coming that we need and might need. I like for the guys to be able to work and do their job, but there is also a line that can be crossed when they are taking a beating and we are not working on beef of those we serve, so, I call for help early. It can always be turned around. As this video shows, the gap when you're tapped out can seem like forever until the next wave arrives.

Our police are a big help to us at fires, occasionally the car is the traffic control and occasionally we are the traffic being controlled. We work through it and bust their chops and most of the time they are good about it. They also do a great job of getting these homes evacuated and areas cleared and information gathered. It's a team effort! Plus they know they really wanted to be firemen anyway. ;)

Our police are a huge help to us every day. Occasionally they get a car in the way. But occasionally we mess up their work as well. so together we work through it and try to do better next time.

And he busts out one back passenger window then the other to string a hose thru. Firemen should just leave hose hooked up there if they leave before he gets back !

Thank you. One of my most important responsibilities is the well being of the crews, and you have to do what needs to be done sometimes to ensure that's happening. We don't have the luxury of a ff on the turntable so we do what needs to be done.

I remember that "Our Lady of Angels" school fire in Chicago. That fire was in December of 1958, and I was a kid of eleven years old. I was in the 5th grade. What hit me was that 93 children and 3 nuns (school teachers) were killed in that tragic fire. At that point in my life I was getting a better understanding of the world being a bigger place than my home in my neighborhood and my Grade School that I walked to every day. I remember talking to my dad about the Chicago fire (he was a career City of Harrisburg firefighter). I can't remember the exact words, but the time he gave me to try to explain what fire can do, and how to avoid smoke (staying low, etc.) and acting fast to escape the smoke, heat and fire. I just couldn't grasp how a school building could burn, and why the kids didn't run away. That's when I learned about the dangers of smoke, and being trapped, which was the "killer" in that Chicago fire. I do remember dad saying most of those children died from the smoke, before the flames of the fire got to them. I began to grow up in a hurry in the late 1950s and those whacky days in 1960s. By the end of the 1960s I began my college days, got drafted into the Army, became a specialist on Aircraft Parts for a Huey unit in South Vietnam. I had several very close calls with death, but I made it home in one piece. I came home, got a good job, got married, bought a home, and we had 2 wonderful kids. And in the late 1970s I was on hand to see my dad retire from his City Fire Department in Harrisburg. He was a happy man to have lived thru 24 years of the stress of dealing with the ugly results when people became victims of tragic fires.

My Chicago elementary school, Arnold, burned down a few months later in January 1959. I was in 8th grade. Lucky it was a Sunday night conflagaration and no people were in the building.

Thank you! I like our team work as well. Our police and EMS are always willing to get in the mix. We don't play games when the chips are down. Its a great group of dedicated people serving HBG! Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get the job done when it needs to be done. Our crews were committed and the guys needed the ladder to be moved as an egress point that was safer to get to. I have no problem making sure those guys are as safe as is possible. You know, when it needs done it needs done, doesn't matter who has to do it.

There was no formalized par over the radio on this incident. That said there were many face to face interactions with the members and officers in charge of sectors as the incident played out. I'm not saying there shouldn't have been, but we had an accountability working and after the video ends got some reinforcements at the command level that began managing other parts of the incident. The way we work isn't for everyone for sure, but just because there was no par over the radio does not mean that there was not accountability being addressed. Thank you for the feedback.

It's not always a perfect situation. But that said the most important safety issue at that moment was to get the main moved so there was egress for the men on the roof as they moved with the fire. Our aerial chauffeurs get dressed and go to work. I know other places may do it differently and that's fine for them. With our staffing and what we often have to accomplish with that staffing it's a trade off we accept. Who wouldn't love more staffing. But while we wait and or fight for that, the job still has to get done, the citizens will not accept, "if only" as an excuse.

It’s sad to see folks lives get turned upside down in an instant with a fire. Hope your able to stay warm up there right now Phil, you guys have been having a tough time the past few weeks it sounds like, but hopefully it’s gonna break soon and better weather is around the corner. Looks like Scott’s even got a good bit of ice and snow in Tennessee which is uncommon to have that much in his area at one time. It’s been bad for a whole bunch of us this month for sure! @@rob.o.b Initial 2 engines, 2 trucks. 1st alarm fill out 1 engine, 1 heavy rescue, 1 air unit. 2nd alarm 2 engines, 2 trucks,1 rescue, then we had two recall engines as well. Roughly 41 personnel in total.

This fire was truly a structure fire. The fire would have eventually entered the living spaces but upon our arrival it had a good hold of the voids and as you said was moving quickly through them. They crews worked hard, got after it quickly and got ahead of it.

Keep in mind these houses are over a hundred years old and are at the heart of a city that has been economically strapped since the 70's. And that they are inhabited by people and families who are just trying to make it to tomorrow. The blame for the long neglect of these homes is directly related to the level of ignorance and level of greed that many of the absentee slumlords have. They are the people living in beautiful neighborhoods in cities and states far away from Harrisburg taking advantage of people who do not have the means to immediately improve their situations. What we see happen day in and day out at the hands many of these landlords is disgusting.

Being smart as you can and being cautiously aggressive, coupled with good communications and coordination will set the stage, then it's hard back breaking work that wins the day.

Every four houses there is a ridge that runs up the roof, you should be able to see it when you look down the row to the left. That ridge is the firewall sticking out through the roof. Not all firewalls do that and not all firewalls are made equal. Some are mostly there and are not tight allowing fire spread, some are in poor shape and in these old houses some of the mortar is breaking down and of course some of them have been breached for various reasons like running utilities ect. You can never just say oh there's a fire wall we're good. But if you get people in there and you 'support' the fire wall you can make a stand and stop the fire there. If the fire wall was good, like we had on the Dauphin St. fire, it does a good job all on its own. But we still had a crew with a hoseline in there monitoring the conditions.

@@MisterTwister55 there also always seems to be a playback speed issue, so good at the beginning doesn't mean good in two min. So I have to slice sections out to realign the sound if that makes sense.

​@@brianbastinelli Yup and if I remember correctly, there's a way in Premiere to tell sync it at two points and the program will fill in between. I have a video using this radio at a pistol range and I had to go back and sync it up to my voice. Not as easy as clapping in front of a camera and syncing. It sounds like you're recording from the station with a radio set for priority scan? I hear the beeps. If you ever need audio, let me know. I have a computer that records every non encrypted talkgroup 24/7.

Good question. The Knee wall is not really specific to row houses but is specific to houses with peaked roofs. The peaked roof created a triangle shaped top floor. The knee wall serves to purposes, one is roof support as it goes from the bottom of the roof to the floor. It is also used to 'square' off a room making it a more inhabitable space. Generally the space behind a knee wall is unfinished and open to other voids in the construction allowing for rapid fire spread. Some people have put floors I that area and doors in the walls and made them into storage areas.

It can certainly be tough conditions. We work hard to be able to work effective in this environment.
