My great great great uncle was a baron, the last in his line but a very kind old gentleman I'm told.

Yes, although they hold a hereditary title baronets are not members of the peerage. They are the highest ranking members of the landed gentry, the largest part of the British upper class. Moreover, baronets are usually related to dukes and marquesses etc. For example, some daughters of the Dukes of Devonshire have married baronets.

Very interesting but some strange pronunciation: viscount is not pronounced 'viss-count' ,but an approximation is 'vie-count'.

We consider that a peerage is merited on the basis that Dickie Stickapopple who was a Knight of the realm invented the wonderfully edible Tripe n Onions with a dash of fresh dill,this quitoxic character used to ride a donkey on our long acre, despite having once charged down horseguards parade on an ill trained Shetland at the inauguration of the current monarch,yes indeed,Noblesse oblige,!!hard to believe really !!

Well explained. Soon the entire peerage hing will be a relic of the past, though. In a way, the corporates are our new Lords, lol.

Is the s in Viscount silent? I thought it was pronounced like French Vicount.

Интересно, сейчас Палате лордов принадлежит высшая судебная власть? И присутствуют ли в ней сейчас аристократы, потомки сподвижников Вильгельма Завоевателя, упомянутых в Книге Страшного Суда?
@curiousaustriantours6962
@curiousaustriantours6962 2 жыл бұрын

No, it doesnt really have any power other than new legislation must pass through the house to become law, which can hold up government proposed changes to law or introduce new ones, peers dont all decend from William the Conqueror either, the aristocracy of Europe were a class set in themselves and intermarried for mostly political reasons other than love, to unite territory, Queen Elizabeth 2 of the UK ancestral family were German ironically called Gore Booth ,

Interesting but thankfully irrelevant today. The Aristocracy always was a flawed system. The foundation of its thinking was fundamentally wrong. That being, the son or daughter of a capable person was also capable. When in fact that is not always the case, it rarely is. Offsprings we’re often average ability or less. This resulted in average ability people being in a place of influence simply because of inheritance and not merit. Most people in the UK today are completely indifferent to titles, although I’m told amongst the wealthy it still is something they scramble for.
