The AKG C214 and the Royer R-10. Side-notes nice vocals and I would prefer the beta 58a over the sm 58. But the 58 is great too just to be clear.

Thanks for this informative video! Can someone please help me to understand the difference between 'true condenser' and back-electret microphones as it pertains to their quality? I am given to understand the KSM137s are 'permanently polarized' (i.e. back-electret) as well as the Lewitt LCT 140 Air, but am curious as to how this impacts overall build quality and the sound. Neumann's website contains some useful information but they add the disclaimer that all of their mics are 'true condenser' which makes me wonder if I should be avoiding back-electret constructions. I welcome others' thoughts! Best, Seán

The SM57 has been used for decades as the podium mic at the White House- the VIP Presidential Microphone Kit. When micing an accordion go for a 58. Accordionists will rake across the 57 grill every time...

@@montazownianr1 They're just mentioning the legacy of the mic I guess, but it's more of a fun fact than anything. I became aware of this when I used it before I switched to using an LCT 440 Pure. The actual configuration the White House uses is the SM57 with the A81WS wind screen.

It would be helpful if you could mention prices as you run through the gear. I know that prices change, but maybe just state the MSRP at time of video creation. If I’m shopping with a $200 budget, knowing which mics make the cut would help me focus on something that I might actually buy.

You'll for sure want a large diaphragm condenser, as for specific recommendations, I don't think I am "experienced" enough to say, but the SM7B from what I've read should work really well for you. Hope that helps and let me know if you get it!

Fathead ribbon mics. They sound amazing as drum overheads, achoustic and electric guitar, they're ribbons so they work on horns, and they work on vocals if you want that old school, trainsient pushing sound. I cannot reccomend them enough.

Caveat. No two rooms sound the same and few rooms actually sound great. The sound of the room in a mix can be hidden depending on what you did during the recording process and also realize that if you start with a lot of reverb you are going to need to add a ton later to have it be intelligible in the mix later if you are looking for a specific reverb sound. Commonly it is the room reverb that is most bothersome and the thing you are trying to bury.

I think the room treatment is underestimated in the video opening. You won’t get a good sound if the room sounds bad even with a great microphone. The treatment doesn’t need to be costy, but it needs some attention! I get that the focus is on the mics though so thumbs up anyway :-)

Bare in mind ribbon mics break easily. its not preferable when an artists destroys a 2000+ dollar by simply dropping it on stage. Although i do like ribbons the most for studio purpose, you really need to be careful of the metal ribbon inside the mic.

Billie Eilish doesn't NEED soundproofing because she sings so close to the mic that you can't hear the room

After listening to her dry voice on the “Ocean Eyes” project that they demoed in Logic, we can tell that there actually is bleed from the headphones AND reflections from the room. Billie didn’t need soundproofing because Finneas is one hell of a producer.

Most misleading statement 1:15 mins into the video “keep in mind billy eilish and her brother won a grammy from recording in her bedroom” not at all how that went down and there was a lot more that went i to why that recording sounded the way it did and won a grammy. The bedroom recording aspect of it could probably only attribute to 1% of why it won that grammy....now proceed
@sweetwater
@sweetwater 4 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. If anything, the location for recording is one of the most important things because, as we’ve seen, it doesn’t have to be a professional studio. It can be a bedroom. And I find that inspiring. In the 20s, recordings were made with people standing around one crude recording source in a room with bad acoustics. But many of those recordings are classics. Why? Because the SOURCE, the performance was there. Billie’s songwriting and her brother’s sonic imagination pulls the majority of the weight for why they are successful. But recorded all at home? You have to recognize that as a valid part of the equation. I also understand more work was done after Billie and Finneas were done with the tracks. But the fact that they recorded a Grammy winning album with stock plugins/instruments and without a professional studio is undeniably remarkable, whether you like her music or not. I made the comment to inspire people to record at home and show them what’s possible. That was all it was meant for. Thanks for checking this out and good luck in building your home studio! "You and I" was recorded at Collier's home: www.grammy.com/grammys/artists/jacob-collier And, of course, recorded in a bedroom: www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/8549785/finneas-explains-recorded-billie-eilish-album-bedroom It's not a myth. It can be done and has been done. Whether they had people campaigning for them or not, whether you care for their music or not, it happened. That's all I wanted to draw attention to. A Grammy is still one of the most highly regarded honors for an artist. Therefore, the possibilities of recording at home are virtually endless. Happy recording!
