Hey, Jeremy…Jeremy here. Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation on the AT2020 mod. I had one from a FB marketplace trade and finished the Mic-Parts mod last night. Phew, was that a lot of work; but it paid off in the end. Sounds incredible! I’m also considering the Soyuz 017FET or the 023 Bomblet as a vox mic for my studio now. Keep making those videos, man! You’re influencing decisions!

Helpful video! Nice to see that you don't have to have any particular mics just because everybody else has them. I'm really struggling to decide what my next purchase should be. I currently own a 57 and a pair of SDCs which have worked great for electric and acoustic guitar. Now that I'm looking for a microphone that works for vocals and voice overs as well as some more cool guitar sounds, I'm really torn between an old MD421 (250€), a SM7b (370€), an affordable ribbon mic (250€), the Sennheiser MK4 (370€) or a Beyerdynamic M201TG (180€). In a not so great sounding room the SM7b seems like the best solution for vocals but something with the detailed sound of a LDC would be cool too. I wish there was a do-it-all solution... If it wasn't for the money...

i really liked the point you made when talking about your tom mics, when micing drums nowadays i always listen to the bleed and how it sounds, and indeed 421's can sound so good but bad at the same time when your bleed is really heavy. interesting to find somebody else that listens to that, i dont know alot of engineers that consider the character of the bleed when picking out mics. cool video!
@RecordingStudioLoser

Thanks! Yeah I feel like drums are unique in that your micing a ton of things to work together. So I try not to separate them in my head. So bleed has always been a focus. I haven’t always been good at it. Haha always learning.

JJ Blair has been bringing the MD421s awful bleed up before. I can't really understand how the 421 has become the industry standard for toms. C414s sound so much better for that purpose.

I just edit between tom fills.. that said, I got rid of 5 of my 7 421s and replaced them with old used EV N/D486s.. Picked up 6 of them used for under $50 a piece CDN.. Totally built for tom placement Top/Bottom.. and they give you that classic Tom sound
@thijnmoons1778
@thijnmoons1778 2 жыл бұрын
@@drdelewded i also do that sometimes, but there are also moments when (good) bleed can give lot's of character to a drumkit, and then mics with awful bleed just won't cut it. good tip on the EV mics, definitely will look for those!

@@thijnmoons1778 Depends on what im doing.. But if I have my way, ive got so many mics on a kit I try to avoid bleed from close mics as much as possible.. But Ill put 20+ mics on a 5 piece.

RE20 sounds so good on bass cabs, especially 15’s but then again I far prefer to mic bass cabs over DI which at best I blend subtly but I know most people are all about bass DI.

I have both, and they're both nice, versatile mics. Don't worry. What he mentioned about "one mic on a drumkit" is useful too. I love the RE 20 as a front of kit mic in conjunction with a kick mic right on the hole. Gives a great general picture of the kit and can add something really nice to the bass.

I’ve read a few people who run recording studios who say they buy hero mikes not so much because they like the sound of them, more that they are better at depreciation as an asset (from a business perspective) and that many people will only come to a studio if they know there’s a u87 or 47 or whatever because it’s like a stamp of quality etc. I thought it was interesting - particularly the asset bit of it as it was part of a broader point about always buying the best level of equipment you can find (I.e. buy American fenders, not Mexican etc).

I must agree with you - I don’t find the U87 all that impressive. The first studio I worked at had NINE of them (we did a lot of big band swing music). Compared to other mics we had, the U87 was disappointing. And this was back when the U87 was out of production.

RE: Gefell UMT70 repair. I went down the rabbit hole to figure out a repair for a UM70s that a buddy of mine let me borrow for a session. In haste I pulled a cable trying to make a run change and his mic hit the floor (no sandbag). Our long search basically led us to having to send the mic to the factory in Germany. It was expensive and it took a long time for the process to be completed. But as far as I know that’s the only real way to get it fixed back to spec. All of the research I did suggested that Gefell is very shy about outsourcing any of their proprietary products and that specific mic requires proprietary tools to be disassembled safely/properly. I think it cost about $800 in 2019 including shipping and insurance. Half the price of a new one (they still make the UM70t afaik) but still a chunk of change. All to say get it fixed when you can! A fantastic mic. Just take a lot of care when using cuz getting them repaired is a pain. Cheers
