AC Odyssey's map is such an accurate representation of what Greece would have looked like back then that there is a UK university that uses exploration mode as part of their ancient history course.

How is Forza Horizon 5 here, but The Crew isn't? The Crew had a map that spanned the entire USA, with major cities like NYC, LA, Miami, Chicago, Vegas, Detroit, San Francisco, St Louis, Seattle, Washington, Dallas, New Orleans, all with their landmarks....it also had smaller places, and basically biggest road network I've ever seen in a game. And you can also explore cross country. I played The Crew for years and still haven't explored every bit of road. I played Forza for a few hours and knew the map pretty well.

I've done all 3 BioShock, what a great series. My wife and I did 3 borderlands too. Right now I'm playing Valheim, it's very frustrating and fun.

This! Always amazes me that ED rarely gets a mention in lists like this - 65,000 light years from one side to the other - billions of planets to explore (admittedly not much to find beyond interesting rock formations!) - you can't get much bigger than a 1:1 scale replica of our galaxy!

Probably because while its huge, it's 100% empty and void of anything, and is barely a game. Anyone can make a procedural generated system, then let it run until its the size of the galaxy. That's not impressive anymore. Actually having content is important. This is why the "game" that literally generates entire galaxies, and thousands of them for you to explore, is never listed... because there's nothing there, and its barren and empty.

RDR2 map isn’t that big.Its just very dense and cleverly designed in a way that makes it feel a lot larger.

I will agree, Elden Ring definately has its difficult moments. Especially the final 3rd of the game. However, it also gave me that skyrim feel. Just exploring the world, wondering what I will find. Skyrim, (Oblivian) Tears of the Kingdom, and Elden Ring just have that sense of wonder to them. (Also Elden Ring has a couple mechanics to the game that make it slightly more forgiving than previous Fromsoft games) Anyway, Elden Ring is a game in which its best qualities, it's difficulty and exploration, (You can literally miss a lot of things in the game) are also the reason people may not enjoy the game.

well I too am not a fan of very hard games and want something more like to enjoy an open world with a fair combat and exploration but I gave elden ring a chance and played it with mods so it would be easier and man it was worth every damn minute, now i got over 300 hours in and I'm patiently waiting for the DLC. You should give it a chance with just a difficulty mod

What I love about soulsgame in the general is the joy of getting lost and explore the surprises by yourself. Was late playing ds 1 so although most bosses are mid compared to today's standard, exploration is still so fun. Any other game like this you guys can reccomend? Something that has no objectives in map and very little cutscenes where you just play your own story.

Steep is also a pretty big place. The Alps map alone is huge, if you combined the three maps it would probably be bigger than some of the games mentioned here.

Star Wars: Galaxies was like that, especially Space itself. Once you were out there in the Dark, if you didnt have the Map and HUD, you could very easily get lost out there. Moons, asteroids and asteroid belts, Space Stations, There was so much out there, and also so much just blank nothingness too. It took a good 30 minutes realtime to find the edge and get turned around and go the far opposite side of the map and get turned around again. It may not be as big as modern games, but just that expanse of nothingness makes it very easy to get lost. Not to mention out there was PvP gankers and also PvE ships just waiting for you to fly by to target and blow your ship into dust. Repairs could be pretty hefty if you have a bad night of getting ganked.

Only game I was truly lost in was Minecraft. Literally lost my home and had to start a new home far far away. I eventually made it back and ended up making a fast travel through the nether because I didn’t want to leave my new tools behind

Elite dangerous - Tops all those maps , you can loose more than 6 months of your life just going from one side of the map to the other. and another 6 getting back. Fuel - old car game one of the best games with a very large map which will keep you going for weeks if not months.

Many open world games are just empty. Ac odyssey is probably biggest "rpg" map to play with a lot of content to do, like a lot (played over year and still i can play forever). And i played tom Clancy Breakpoint - probably biggest open world 3rd person shooting game with such a huge map, lots of content to do, and lots of outpost to conquer. Those 2 may be my favorite. I hate when map is just empty af or they give u few different monsters to kill and that's it.

World of Warcraft is pretty big. Kalimdor alone is 41 Sq. miles and Eastern Kingdoms is 57. And that's only the main vanilla maps. Lorewise it is 1000 miles across.

Final Fantasy XV was just too depressing for me to fully enjoy. The final part was so depressing that I just wanted to turn of my console and walk away. The ending left me feeling empty to the point where any thoughts of a second playthrough left my mind. After XV, I wait to see if the game is going to be another depressing pitty party before I even think about buying it. I hate that because I used to play every Final Fantasy title when they came out. It's not like I want a "and they lived happily ever after" ending. I just don't want to sit through 15 minutes of beloved characters grieving in order to force some kind of depth for us to get attached to. Dragon Quest XI had the perfect amount of tragedy without it becoming overwhelming.
