15 habits for a low buy year to make it easier to stick to your budget every month! If you want to learn how to stop spending money because of things like retail therapy, impulse buying, lifestyle creep, and influencer marketing you’re going to find a TON of value in this minimalist guide video!
I used to spend hundreds of dollars a month on clothes chasing a life I thought I wanted. All until I became obsessed with personal development and minimalism at the end of 2019. Curious about how to do a low buy year I turned to our trusted friend google and really only found articles and videos on low buy rules. This honestly turned me off a bit to the idea of doing this challenge feeling like it was focused more on a bandaid fix for a challenge versus habits for saving money that can grow into having a healthy relationship with my finances and with spending my money. That's when I started focusing on changing my mindset, working through limiting beliefs, and building my own habits that now work in my favor even outside of a low buy year. Today I'm sharing exactly what has helped me save hundreds of dollars every month for the last year and I believe these habits for a low buy year will help you take control of your finances as well.

Same I have been working on this. I started my no buy year on my birthday this year because I have way to much and my compulsive shopping is out of control so I finally cut myself off. I won’t even allow myself to go to grocery store yet because I know I will buy what I don’t need so I I have a saved grocery list and I just have it delivered so I don’t browse or shop. I also cut all apps for shipping off my phone including safari because I don’t want to see them. That way I can gain control. I have been only using cash for necessities and I leave cash and cards at home when I leave so I’m not tempted. I have had to take drastic measures because I know how bad I am. I am trying to use everything I already have and not think about it. I revert to these videos when I’m feeling tempted and I have been doing so much better.

Some great tips. I hate the idea of a “successful“ shopping trip. As if success has anything to do with whether you spent money or not. Honestly, I think being able to walk around and not buy anything is just as successful as buying everything. It says to me that I know who I am, and I don’t need to walk out with a full cart to validate that.

Same and Its crazy to look back and think that I used to actually be upset whenever I would leave a store empty handed... I completely agree, it is just as successful to leave a “shopping” trip without buying anything!! Love your thoughts on this matter. I’m doing a no buy year and I’m finding your videos so helpful 🙂 Last month I saved £1000, the most I’ve ever had in savings. Limiting going grocery shopping to once a week has helped a lot and I’ve replaced the time I used to spend online shopping with hobbies like crochet and baking 😊
@ReneaDominique

That’s amazing that you were able to save that much last month!!! Keep it going! 👏🏼 yes it can be easy to run to the store more than once a week and then end up buying way more snacks than anticipated, 😂 limiting yourself to only going grocery shopping once a week is a great habit to have! LOVE that you’re intentional with your time and focus on creating through hobbies instead of spending your time consuming 👏🏼🤩🤍

I am doing a no-buy 2021. I don't enjoy shopping, especially for clothing, so I am not tempted to spend on clothing, accessories, makeup or hair. My areas tend to be things like books. In 2021 I am not spending on anything but necessities. In January I only spent on something other than needs twice for a total of $12.30. So far in February I have not spent on anything but bills & needs. I have been living a minimalist life for some time. I own 40 clothing pieces and don't "do" home decor. I don't have "extras" or "backups" (except books & plants😄). I eat whole foods, nothing packaged or processed. I find the change in mindset that I have experienced means I am less interested in things and have no interest in "keeping up" with others or with fashion, etc.

I've been doing my low-buy for 4.5 months: I don't buy anything fashion or beauty related, unless I'm gifted a voucher or it's an essential replacement. I also made a 'contract' to myself with conditions/rules, signed it, so it's official. I know that may sound silly but it makes me feel awful just thinking about breaking that contract with myself. It's made a HUGE difference to my life. Sometimes I'll have a weak moment and have a look at Zara online, but that extreme temptation to buy I used to feel is gone. I've also saved so much money despite taking a pay cut at work. It can't hurt to try 😊

Really great video and looking forward to more of your content! Just to add something to your point about stores - I think what has helped me shy away from going into stores like Target, IKEA etc. (the ones that give you that shopping 'experience') is the knowledge that these companies have teams of people dedicated to employing tactics with the specific aim of getting you to buy more than you actually need. Learning about some of those tactics has definitely been eye-opening. It's off-putting that many companies try their best to control consumer spending without caring about the consequences for individual consumers.

It helps me to think about how long I will need to use sth. up, especially with cosmetics or food my partner doesn't share. Am I willing to manage that amount of inventory in my head and space for this time? Especially condiments and cosmetics we want to try are quickly bought but add up because they are rarely the only items in these categories we have and are mostly used in small amounts. And especially with food, we easily overestimate how fast we will use sth. up and how much we will realistically eat.

Hi Renea! Thanks for another incredibly thoughtfully made video :) I was wondering if you have any tips for maintaining a low-buy mindset while moving out on your own? I feel like I'm going to end up buying a lot of new things in those first couple months.
@ReneaDominique
@ReneaDominique 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely! First off congrats on moving out on your own!! 👏🏼🥳 the first thing I recommend is taking as many hand-me-downs as you can the first year or two while you’re saving up to buy the furniture and pieces you truly want. Ask your friends or family if they have any extra home necessities that you can either borrow for now or keep 🥰 Prioritize what you actually need first. For things you need but can’t get hand-me-downs for like: pots and pans, knives, kitchen things, mattress, towels. Focus on buying those first before you get other furniture or appliances. I would suggest making a list somewhere to keep track (: Create a budget for how much you can allocate each month to go towards buying things for your move. Definitely never settle for furniture that isn’t exactly what you want, this was one of my biggest regrets with moving out on my own for the first time. Be ok with sitting on the floor the first month if you need to while you look for a couch or while you save up the money. Or if you’re not interested in buying your dream furniture at first and you want to save as much money as possible try finding secondhand furniture on the Facebook marketplace (: you can honestly find some golden nuggets there for a great price! Again, congrats!!! That’s so exciting 👏🏼

I tried telling the lady at the till I didn’t want to pay for this stuff. She shrugged, smiled and said “no worries!” as she continued to place in a shopping bag ALL THE. STUFF. I. DIDNT. WANT. 😱😰

Videos like these make me really wonder how much of a shopping addiction North Americans have. I came here because I just bought a vest. The other day, I went out and was a little chilly. Autumn is coming here and soon I won't be able to wear my favourite button down shirts without a Moto jacket, but that would completely consume the shirt. So I thought, if I get a cute vest, I can still style these shirts. So I went on to my fave second hand site and researched all the styles of vest. I picked one and wrote to the girl, we negotiated a price. It costs around one full day of my labour. It took about a week and a half to find, research and confirm. I am wondering if I did the right thing though, surely I could have made it through autumn without a vest. Anyway, this video put my purchase into perspective. Not an impulse buy by North American standards I guess.

Hahaha this triggers me 😂 I feel this on such a deep level. It’s going to take a lot of self discipline if you’re trying a low buy year! What really helps is to think about how much you’re saving and your “why.” is it to pay off debt? Is it because you feel like you’re always living paycheck to paycheck because of your spending habits? Getting clear on why you’re trying to develop healthier habits with spending is going to be really important. That’s what really kicked my butt into finally quitting my shopping habit and starting a low buy year last year 😂 I still struggle every now and then but my “why” keeps me in check!
@ReneaDominique
@ReneaDominique 3 жыл бұрын
But also buying that item shouldn’t feel shameful! As long as it’s intentional and you’re sticking to a reasonable budget it’s ok. I think being hard on yourself for buying things can quickly turn into a toxic relationship with your money. There’s so much grey area here but do what feels right for you 🤍

@@ReneaDominique I totally agree with you and I ended up setting a small budget without stressing myself much , keeping wondering is it essential or not , as money at the end supposedly to bring us happiness not that much stress but I’ve never broken this budget going buying everything as I used to be , I’m hoping in the future to be even some months not to buy anything not essential. Treating yourself once in a while is ok, too. Just be conscious about it, as you seem to be. I made a "wishlist" where I put items I really want or limited editions/flavours/scents of products I want to try and I set myself a limit of one of these items per quarter (if still available) as a treat. If it wasn't available anymore by then, I didn't choose another item from the list, though. Maybe set a price limit, too. And this kind of list can also double as a wishlist for birthdays or Christmas for things you wouldn't treat yourself to. Or treat yourself to an alternative, like an experience or education instead.
