A full behind the scenes video of a 15 minute portrait shoot of a bride and groom at Eaves Hall in Lancashire, all filmed in one take. For this shoot I used two cameras (a Sony A9 and a Nikon D810) and two lenses (Samyang 35mm 1.4 and Nikon 85mm 1.8) and only used natural light. In this video you will see how I pose the bride and groom using natural light and also see the edited photographs and the settings which I used.
On a normal wedding day I would usually have two 15 minute portrait sessions with my bride and grooms, one in the natural light in the middle of the day and one as the sun is setting in the evening - this video is an example of how I would work in the natural light portrait session. I work quickly to try and give my couples a nice variety of wedding photographs but the key is to make the portrait session fun.
A huge thank you to Demi and James for being such awesome models and also to my friend and amazing wedding videographer Jonathan Anelli for filming this video for me. Check out Jon's work here: redseats.co.uk/

I've just come off the phone to a couple whose wedding i'm shooting next year and had this exact conversation with them, about only wanting them for 15-20 minutes. Great to see just how much can be done in that time. I know I need to maximise it more so a video like this really does help. Cheers Neil.

Thank you so much mate, I really appreciate that. That's what I was hoping to get across, that in 15 minutes you can actually take quite a lot of shots and give them a bit or variety too. Thank you again!

@NeilRedfern

Thank you very much Marko! It is tricky to match the two as they each have their own colour profile - my advice would be to have an individual preset for each camera in Lightroom and change the HSL sliders in Lightroom so that they match. It is not easy though but it can be done.

Great vid Neil, something you could use from wedding to wedding with images you could use to fill up the album. What would you do if you wanted to get the couple in front of the venue shot, but the sun was in front of the couple making them squint or panda eyes . Thank you for taking the time to make this.
@NeilRedfern
@NeilRedfern 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Tim! Great question, If that were the case I probably would shoot from a sightly different angle or wait until later in the day to take that shot. But you'll see that I never have the couple looking at me (the camera) so it may not be too much of an issue. I much prefer them interacting with each other

Hi Neil... I'm new to your channel and I love your "how i shot this image" vids. Just a quick question. In this vid as an example are you shooting in aperture priority or manual.. ?? Also as your ambient light is always changing do you routinely for these quick fire shots keep your WB in auto in a real wedding scenario ??? Thanks for all your time in sharing your experience.

Hi Neil...love your style of photography...how are you metering these shots? Are you in Aperture Priority or Manual? Spot metering or evaluative? Are you metering on the shadow side of the face? Thanks for your very informative videos.!!!

Bloody Brilliant Neil what helped me learn most from this is how well you communicate with the couple , also i noticed that you hardly use zoom's based on the amazon gear list, is the 35mm and the 85mm your staple lens for the entire wedding or do you tend to use the 70-200mm at all, debating on either 85mm, 70-200mm or the 135mm. Thanks...... May I make a suggestion for the next video on how you use the various tools like fractals, loupes, and prisms.
@NeilRedfern
@NeilRedfern 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much and great suggestions! Yes I use a 35mm and 85mm for 90% of the day, the only other lenses I use are a 24mm and, very rarely, a 135mm but that's it. I stopped using my 70-200 about 3 years ago now and I feel my work has improved as a result. Thank you very much again!

Amazingly educational and really cool to see your process. Wondering whether you ever use lens hoods rather than just your hand, or rather, why not use lens hoods the entire shoot? Makes your kit less cumbersome as you walk around?
@NeilRedfern
@NeilRedfern 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Todd! Good question, I think I've actually lost my lens hood haha, but yes I could have done if I had one. The reason why I don't like using lens hoods is because sometimes I want the flare, using my hand just allows me to control it, plus I also like to shoot through things that, sometimes, are right up against my lens

Thank you very much! Yes, I did when I was shooting Nikon, now I have a 16-35mm 2.8 on my Sony to cover wider focal lengths

Thank you Ron! Much appreciated. No, I always shoot in manual. Nothing wrong with however you prefer to shoot but personally I've always shot in manual as I find that works best for me

Awesome work.Just one question,last shot (B&W) settings are 1/32000 !!! f1.4 !!! maybe you think 1/3200 f.4.0 becouse house and threes are also sharp or i missing something :-/

Thank you very much! Nope the settings in the video were correct, the Sony A9 allows 32000 shutter speed. The building probably isn't as sharp in reality as it looks on KZfaq. Bt bear in mind the couple weren't that close to me for shot so even 1.4 won't blur the background all that much

Great video mate.did you set your iso or use auto

Thank you very much! In conditions like this I tend to set my ISO to 100 or 200 and then just leave it. I shoot manual everything as I find that better for consistency which makes editing easier

I’m slowly learning from you and hopefully save enough to be able to attend one of your up coming training. I tried your trick here yesterday, did some shots in the sun and exposed to the building highlights and secondly exposed to the sky. I got some good images but my subject was underexposed. Is it better that way and then brighten the subject in photoshop? Or just expose for the subject and work the sky in post?
@NeilRedfern
@NeilRedfern 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! The method I try to stick to is to the make the subject the brightest part of the image and I try to do that as best I can in camera. I then expose for the brightest part of the frame - ideally the subject. You'll notice I don't often include the sky in my images unless I'm using off camera flash and underexposing - that's because the sky will almost always be the brightest part of the frame.
