As an owner of a second 4runner and having had them for almost 20 years running, I can say most of these issues are overblown in terms of actual frequency. Half of these issues I have never even heard of being a problem, and that's spending a lot of time on the forums over the years. One issue I did have that was mentioned in this video was that the gas struts on my 2001 went after many many many years... just like all gas struts eventually do, so take that for what its worth.

I put over 100,000 miles on my 2012 and traded it in with no rust evident at all under or on the vehicle and I live in Ontario Canada. My 4Runner never even needed brakes to pass the safety after 100,000 miles. Never cost me a dime other than normal maintenance and no issues with my tailgate either. In fact that has been my experience with my FJ, 4Runner, Tacoma, 2 Tundras and now my Highlander. Absolutely no issues what so ever, not even a blown light bulb. These are the best made vehicles in my opinion.

The bottom line: the Toyota 4Runner is arguably the most dependable vehicle in the world! But this video has some issues; like, if the 4Runner has paint quality issues why do you show a Rav4 and not a 4Runner? The soy based wires is quickly becoming an industry standard being used by companies like Subaru, Kia Hyundai, Nissan, etc. Hatch struts, that's a good one! If I had a dollar for every person I have known who had issues with struts on the hood or trunk of a car/suv I would be a very wealthy man! Transmisstroubles, another good laugh! Everyone knows the drivetrain of the 4Runner is bulletproof!!! Many of your examples seem to be driven by a single complaint. I challenge everyone who sees this video to go out and ask the next 5 people you see driving a 4Runner how they like it, how good has it been? I bought mine in 2020 and it has been flawless through over 38,000 miles! Moreover, before buying I talked to probably a dozen owners, young and old, man and woman and they all loved their 4Runners! One had over 350,000 miles with only routine maintenance. Don't like the 4Runner? That's a question of taste, not reason. Buy a Jeep and find out what a really unreliable vehicle can be like! The 4Runner is known for its reliability and solid service record placing it with the other two most reliable vehicles ever made; the Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota Corolla! Notice a pattern here???

@andrewilliamson6057 I actually have family that owned a Jeep dealership for three generations. My first New vehicle was a Jeep... nothing but trouble! 19,000 miles and the tranny went and I sold it at a huge loss... one and done! My 4Runner now has 54,000 miles and not a single issue! My 2021 Tundra has 64,000 miles and not a single issue! Best of luck, but you don't need luck with a 4Runner.

@JoeBuck-uc3bl honestly, I know someone with 360,000 miles on a 4Runner who parks it on the street.. and I live in Rhode Island! The frame issues are real, but I have yet to meet anyone who has had the problem. My 4Runner is now 4 years old and looks fine underneath. Same with my Tundra that's almost 4 years old. I don't have a garage, either. My 4Runner now has 60,000 miles and not a single issue! My Tundra has 67,000 and the same.

2013 4Runner owner here. At 147k, I have not had any of these electrical or hatch issues. I did have the airbag recall performed, but it was a recall and free, no big deal. The rust issue is definitely a problem in the areas that use road salt, I keep a close eye on my frame and apply rust proofing products in the time that I've owned it. One thing to note is that though there was a class action lawsuit, 4Runner owners received nothing. Certain year Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia owners got new chassis installed by Toyota, but 4runner owners are out of luck. Lots of 4Runners met an untimely death due to chassis corrosion.

Wow, as an owner of a 2008 4Runner, I have never experienced any of these problems. I have owned mine for almost 15 years with no failures of any kind, with normal dealer servicing. @ow-my-achilles1106

I have not really heard of anyone complaining about the reliability of their 4Runner, they are extremely reliable. They will last nearly forever is maintained. I want to comment on one of the reported "issues" . A vehicle cruise control system SHOULD NOT BE USED when it is snowing. Variable traction means that it is likely there will be wheel slip, and the traction control/stability control system will try and brake the slipping wheel. However, this will immediately disengage the cruise control, therefor it is NOT a problem, it is a safety feature of all modern cruise control systems. They also disengage if experiencing a hydroplaning event in heavy rain, if a wheel loses traction, cruise control will shut down. I owned a 4th generation 2003 4Runner Limited V6 4 speed (bought new) until 2013. 10 years of very reliable service and my needs changes so I sold it with 121,000 miles on the odometer. It went on to survive another 8 years with the new owner and his daughter, and was rolled in an accident and totaled, but the two people in it were fine. If you want dirt, then the early 4th gen brake system issues (frozen calipers due to poorly designed brake caliper seals), brake pedal pulsation impossible to fully eliminate, JBL stereo head unit POPS and CRACKS (electrical, unsolved), cracking seat leather regardless of meticulous care. And that's it really, all the "bad" issues, otherwise it was a fantastic vehicle, and most of these 5th gen "issues" are random issues.

I have owned a fifth gen 2011 for over 10 years and I have had 4 of these issues on mine during the years. First one the tail gate shocks. Replaced one tail light because the brake light didn't work, changed the socket and new bulbs didn't fix the issue. I'm experiencing the gas tank indicator failure, I need to add gas while the miles range indicate 60 miles, I ran out of gas twice because of this. Tailgate actuator changed because it stopped working. Also replaced all the window weather strip seals.

I've owned many 4Runners. 2014 SR5 Premium. 2021 TRD Offroad. 2022 TRD Pro. And just bought a 2024 TRD Pro in my dream build. The only issue I've had with 4Runners is when I purchased the 2014. I agree with the "where you live" statement, but the wire insulation made from soybean oil is actually a real issue for may brands, rodents like eating it, regardless of vehicle brand. I chuckle because the engineers who were forced to comply with a "green" initiative probably never thought about their design being eaten by animals.

I drive tested one 2012 SR5 and aside from a steering bad vibration when hitting the brakes, I noticed that the car tends to incline too much forward when hitting the brakes hard. The other thing was that trottle and brake pedals are too close one to another so I felt that my foot was touching the brake pedal when I tried to trottle. Something else; if the car has seats for 7 passengers, the trunk basicaIly leaves room for a tablet; no room. I have been thinking on buying one 4R because they look solid and long lasting but I see issues here that makes me think that they are not that good.

Hogwash. Nothing is perfect and defective parts are a reality, but in the 4Runner's case, these aren't common issues. The rust on frames is an issue if you live in the rust belt, but lots of trucks are susceptible to the same problem which is mitigated by an undercoating...lanoline oil being the best. Cmon man.

I have a 2018 4R and couldn't be happier with it. I love the cars outdatedness, it's why I bought it. So far I haven't experienced any of these known issues. Luckily I live in the south west where no god damn road salt is being used. If you drive on salty roads, I recommend washing the car underneath frequently, if possible with warm water. Doing this will significantly reduce corrosion. I would do that with any vehicle.

I feel like this Fake and False video was made by a Jeep Lover. Because I’ve owned a 1993 4Runner and now I have a 2021 4Runner and all the allegations are false. Never had rust issues or any other alleged problems.

I've had two 5th gen 4runner's one sr5 and now a 2016 4runner trail with kdss, and both 4runner's have had zero problems, i find this video a joke and can't imagine where it gets it's information from. yes, the 4runner might not be the perfect vehicle on the planet, but by far, it will outlast anything else out there and still have a much better resale value. If I ever sold my 5th gen, it would be for another 4runner. Love my 4runner.

Liftgate struts? Just replace it when it starts getting weak. I've never seen a strut on *any* suv fail "suddenly"

A real issue is oil leak on the engine timing cover, which requires the engine to be taken out to fix!!! 4Runner owners just don’t like to talk about this for whatever reason!

Glad I didn’t “buy” into the 4Runner hype. I wasn’t aware that 4Runners had so many issues. Especially the frame rust problem. Overhyped junk.

Idk if I’m happy that I bought my 4Runner now.. I started having 4x4 issues and I read it could be the actuator. Idk how much that’s gonna be…

Rust is a major one, the rest is mostly nitpicking. Rust effectively taken care of by applying a coat of liquid film every fall if you above the rust belt. Sunroofs are useless gimmick anyway. Rough shifting... well, it's a 5 speed 2nd and 3rd are very tall. If you floor it, what do you expect. Everybody forgot how 5 speed shifts. Having said that, I only had 4th get v8 and there was a major problem with manifold cracking. Because they crammed v8 in an otherwise small hood. But there is no v8 for 5th gen. So problem solved I guess? :)

The v8 in 4th gen is same in 1st gen tundra/sequoia/land crusier. I had my exhaust manifold gasket go in my '05 Sequoia. Nothing but exhaust fumes coming into cabin especially at start up.

@@garyf2871 Yes, 4.7. But manifolds are different design due to hood space constraint. They cracked. It's a known issue with V8 4runners.

If they have THAT many known issues-- WHY THE HELL ARE THEY KNOWN AS THE most reliable suv you can get-- anywhere??? They are NUMBER ONE on most every rating chart and test you can find- and NO ONE wants to get rid of one... the used ones- good ones- are HARD to find. EXPLAIN that if there are this many issues.

The vestigial mini tow hitch is too short to really be compliant with any standard. This is necessary for the spare tire clearance. Water pools in the passenger floor and while some believe it is a "sunroof leak" there is no definitive set of causes. The clearcoat on the wheels fails, making the aluminum corrode. The Blizzard White paint was subject to a recall due to peeling, so kudos to Toyota for this at least. The finish on the chrome-like door handles (not just on 4Runners) fails and no, those cheap Amazon covers do not fit. On mine I carefully pried the covers off and turned them upside down to hide the mess.

Check the drain tubes on your sunroof. They feed down through the roof pillars and exit underneath the vehicle. There is a "filter/plug" type of thing at the end of the tube. It plugs up and you will get water in sunroof and under floor mats. Pull up the plastic trim at door threshold. You can get access to the end of tube and remove clog. Problem goes away.

I blew mine out with compressed air (120 psi). It can blow the end fittings off. Better to remove the end fittings first before blowing out with compressed air or cleaning the tube with a long brush on a wire.

I cry foul and BS. I've driven 4runners since 2008, and now on my 3rd, a 2022. Did you notice the "paint issue" section isn't even a 4runner? As for the rest, I never had a single problem being discussed in this video, on any of them. I never received a single recall notice for any of them. This is a bunch of crap, and created by someone who hates them becasue they are so reliable. If you need proof, go to Consumer Reports. You will see the reliability history, and it's always very good to excellent. C'mon, I know because I never had a single issue with any of my 4runners.
