No one ever seems to mention battery operated clocks. May seem unimportant but think you will want to know what time of day or night it is and if there is a day of the week display, even better. Have more than one so when batteries die on one, you will have another one and not have to guesstimate the actual real time to reset it.

I agree, I love mine too. I keep one charged in my light in the living room and one in the back of the house in the den. When a plane crashed here by the house the power went off, and the light came right on. I charged all of them when I first got them. My daughter lives across the street and wasn’t prepared so I gave her one.

Hi Jinnie, thanks for your list. I think one thing for those who burn wood is not only the fire extinguisher, but also check to make sure your flue pipes for fireplaces and stoves are clean and have no buildup that can start fires. For the candles (and flashlights), make sure that there are some that can be found quickly should the power go out and anything with open flames should be kept in sturdy holders and where they can't be tipped over by pets and kids. In addition to blankets and sleeping bags, using flannel sheets sometimes is a very nice cozy way to keep your bed warmer too. If you sew, look for remnants at the fabric store for polar fleece, some of them are blanket size and can be a quick and easy way to keep warm too, no sewing needed.

Backup your store bought candles with a few Crisco candles - take a small jar fill with scoops of Crisco - make it even and push a birthday candle into it - voila its ready to go and lasts a long time. you could also take a cheap taper candle and cut it in half to make two larger candles. the wick should be just above the Crisco level. also recommend fire blanket

Isnt the Battery Daddy heavy when filled. Another consideration is consolidating types of batteries. AAA/AA batteries is easier to find or barter for than coin batteries and other shapes. Does lantern oil or lighter fuel disintegrate over time? I dont want to but lots of lighters to find the sealed package fuel is dry. Dont forget your pets and their needs. Reflective, illuminated coats (yes they ALL need coats) and leashes. esp if power is out. I have tripped over my all black dog.

I love my candles and love it when the conversation turns to candles. The first thing to say about candles is the safety concerns. With all of the options available these days, if you are absent-minded, accident prone, or have a house full of rambunctious kids and pets, maybe you shouldn't use candles. Otherwise, when used safely, candles can be a great resource that can store forever with no spoilage, no need for rotation, or any special evironmental considerations other than avoiding high air temps.

Good list. When it comes to a radio for information gathering, I would also suggest a scanner. DON'T waste your money getting a cheapo analog only scanner anymore. This day in age many public safety agencies are already using or planning to switch to DMR or P25 which are digital. An analog scanner won't do you any good. A digital scanner that's P25/DMR/analog capable will do the trick. You can keep ears on public safety, utility companies and also VHF/UHF ham radio activity. During bad storms or significant events, ham operators are always on the air. If you have a shortwave receiver, a good frequencies to listen to in Maine is 3.940MHz LSB with a secondary of 7.262 LSB. We connect the state together usually on 3.940.

The tent needs to be a wind proof, water resistant tent to hold heat. A lot of tents on the market are thin with mesh and won't hold heat. If that's all you have or all you can afford, use emergency blankets and tape to line the inside of the tent to help reflect heat. If you don't have a tent, build a "fort" old school like we did as kids with blankets. It works in a pinch!

Boiling water does not clean it well enough to use for drinking water. How do I know this? I spent a year in the DRC. Our water came straight from the river. There was an in-house filter system and then we were instructed to boil it for 30 minutes. They forgot to turn on the filter at my house. The first week I was there. I boiled that water at a hard boil for 45 minutes, cooled it, and then drank it. Within a day my children and I had ameobic dysentery. Get a life straw or one of the other systems and boil your water, but don’t trust boiled water

OMG, in our retirement community we have two wells. We get mandatory state testing done. I personally will not drink it unless it goes thru additional filtering in my home. I hope you recovered and don’t have long term health issues. Many blessings.

Does lantern oil good bad over time?

We've read that if your cooking oil goes rancid don't throw it out. Use it in your oil lamps so I would think lamp oil would still burn. It may smoke more or not smell the same.

Hi Momma. Same things really. Just cos you live in an apartment doesn't preclude any of the items that Jinne has listed. You will still need light, food, and warmth, so candles, tinned food, and warm clothing and blankets will still address these concerns, won't they?

Get a tent that will fit on your bed, will keep you warm. Close off rooms with blankets. Plastic on windows. Couple tealight candles on stove with a clay pot over it will help keep room warm. Buddy propane heater. Inverter with a car battery 2 plug stuff in,Plus extension cords. Dehydrated foods, can foods, things that just need hot water (or room temperature). Hot hands to keep you warm. Battery or USB charged socks, vests, gloves. Extra blankets. Butane camp stove. Good luck. 😻

Can someone please give me the name of a good oil lamp fuel. I bought some from Wal-Mart that was suppose to be for indoors use and had to use it one night when the power went out. Turned my lamps completely black, I had black soot in my nose and my husband checked the furnace filters the next day as well and they were black. Needless to say, we will NOT be using that oil again inside the house.

It sounds like you had your wick too tall. That soots things up. You light it with the wick up, put the globe on and then lower the wick. Should be no soot then.

Hey Jinnie ever thought about relocating to Florida or California? Get away from the cold. Your kids and hubby would surely be up for it. Anyways another great reminder of what's important to survive the colder months.
