Roman Szmal Aquarius professional watercolor paints NEW COLORS released late 2021 to early 2022. Review favorites, rare pigments + tribute to my cat Cookie show more for links
Roman Szmal watercolor - www.jacksonsar...
PAPER = I mainly use Arches Cold Press you can find it on Jackson's UK - www.jacksonsar...
or Blick USA - shrsl.com/2twqj
More affordable alternative = BaoHong academy cotton - www.jacksonsar...
Porcelain mini mixing tray with many wells for easy color mixing:
Amazon palette - amzn.to/32QbuAi
or Jacksons palette - www.jacksonsar...
Neptune paint brushes are a soft synthetic vegan imitation squirrel which hold an amazing amount of water!
Brushes at Blick - shrsl.com/2tyw0
Jackson's - www.jacksonsar...
Amazon - amzn.to/3mwldCY
Waterproof ink pens Tombow Mono fineliner amzn.to/3vB35gz
White highlights = I use white gouache and a 3/0 princeton heritage round detail brush. I no longer recommend gel pens (blobs, skips, fixed line width). Any pro grade PW6 Titanium White gouache can be mixed with watercolor to tint your highlights. M Graham has a lovely white gouache that does not crack in the dry pan as badly as other brands, but Schmincke Horadam's pro gouache is a close second with superb quality.
Schmincke Titanium White gouache on Jacksons (UK/worldwide) here: www.jacksonsar...
or M Graham white gouache on Amazon US: amzn.to/3rIw8wi
or at Blick: shrsl.com/3ds5w
I use affiliate links. As an Amazon, Blick or Jackson's associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Thank you :)
I generally buy most of my art supplies through Jacksons. They ship worldwide (larger orders get more affordable and the DHL option usually ships to USA within a week).
I highly recommend checking their huge selection of most major watercolor brands, papers, palettes and other media at - www.jacksonsar...

A list of art supplies that I use in my videos can be found in the description section. If you've been waiting for Roman Szmal watercolors to come back in stock since the January release sold out, they are available again at Jacksons (affiliate link): www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/roman-szmal-aquarius-watercolour-paint?___store=jacksonsart_us&acc=c0f168ce8900fa56e57789e2a2f2c9d0 I expect many brands to experience extended out-of-stock issues due to shipping back ups world wide. This was already bad due to supply chain issues and pandemic woes, but are now so much worse due to the conflict in Russia and Ukraine. The oil/gas shortages and increases in fuel costs will have an impact on many things, including the cost of art supplies. Since Roman Szmal ships from Poland, and the area has massive back ups from FedEx and UPS discontinuing service to neighboring countries, as well as many people from Ukraine fleeing their homes to go to Poland - there may be increased delays in/from this area over the coming months. I don't want to cause panic shopping, but definitely want fellow artists to be prepared - or very patient - about other upcoming challenges regarding watercolor. There will be long or permanent delays for goods coming from Ukraine and Russia. If you are primarily using White Nights or Rosa Gallery watercolors, this may be a good time to make sure you have what you need in case they are unavailable for some prolonged period of time. There is nothing directly shipping from either country at this point. Ukraine is under attack in many areas. All major shipping companies and even payment systems like visa/mastercard have shut down operation in Russia. The supplies currently in stock at art stores outside of those countries may be the last available worldwide for some time. Because the most affordable Cobalt and Cadmiums come from this part of the world, and the prices of both were already on the rise, I am definitely concerned about the affordability of paint moving forward. I hope that Roman Szmal will be able to keep his prices low, as this is one of the absolute best quality and affordable options available to us now.

Yes this is why I have been watching Jackson's like a hawk for their restock on March 7th. I have a feeling prices are going to rise a metric blank ton due to the gas prices to transport products from factory/shop to store, not to mention the the white knights and rosa gallery paints coming out of Russia. Those are going to be a buy on eBay item from indirect sellers who have stock until this war ends. I'm stocked up on those, but I wanted the new colors from Roman Szmal and figured this would be it. So I bit the bullet and bought them. Jackson's is fully stocked in the full line right now minus a few, so go get 'em while they last.

As someone who recently lost a fur-baby of their own, allow me to say that this is an absolutely beautiful tribute. Gorgeous painting, and wonderful video footage. I'm impressed with the Quin Scarlet, what an intriguing color! Definitely will have to think about that one, the tomato-tone of it is neat. Thank you for sharing all of this!

I have had the chanse to try already Quinophtalone Yellow thanks to Roman Szmal himself, and I have fallen in love with that color like anything else before. It is so glowy, it almost blinds you when you apply it on the paper, and this characteristic shows up strongly even after glazing other colors above. Never without this color again. Thank you for sharing all of them. I am also really excited to see that he's bringing us lots of new pigments to try out, the look definitely interesting.

Yes Quin Yellow PY138 definitely looks almost fluorescent, it is incredible how strong and bright it is! I don't think it will suit all art styles considering how intense and eager to flow it is, but it is certainly unique and I know some artists will absolutely love it. I am so happy that Roman has been building such a robust collection of pigments to offer us. It's so nice to have all these options available :D

Wow! Those color mixes are stunning. And the Blue Ridge Sienna's response to salt is gorgeous. It looks as tho you could paint a sun-filled background, and then use salt to create a "spontaneous forest" landscape, to fill in later with trees. White Nights quin rose is one of my absolute essentials for florals, because I can't deal with opera colors. The Quin Purple of Roman Szmal seems like a much lovelier purple than I'm used to seeing in some of the intense quin violets and purples out there. Thanks for the tour of the new colors!
@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 2 жыл бұрын
I definitely like PV55 better than the similar PV19 purple-leaning version colors I've used, bonus it happens to perform really well in lightfast tests! That is a fascinating idea about the salt forest art!!! I too am particularly fond of Quin Rose PR122, a lovely affordable magenta option. White Nights has a PV55 too, Quin Violet, but it looks darker like the blue shade variant compared to the brighter pinkish undertone in Roman's. Because of world events I think we may have a hard time restocking White Nights or Rosa Gallery paints, so it's really lucky for artists we have such lovely affordable options from Roman Szmal.

Thank you so much, I wanted to honor Cookie in a way that would make me smile and celebrate having known her. Yes, I saw that these Roman Szmal colors sold out so fast in mid January! It took nearly 2 months for them to come back into stock, I think a lot of people have been waiting for this. That quin yellow py138 is super crazy strong, if that's what you're after (and you don't mind some unruly qor-like action) you'll probably be impressed! This Quin Scarlet though, stole my heart and it's not often I add a totally new color to my main palette :D

My favorites in this video were the Cobalt Green Deep, the Quin. Purple and then I found myself oddly fascinated with the two more opaque ones - the Iron Chrome Brown and the Manganese Brown. The background in your painting is beautiful and I love the white touches you almost always put on at the end. I'm so sorry you lost Cookie; thank you for sharing her with us. It made me cry. 😥 Hugs, Kimberly.

The browns are definitely unique, it is so rare to find smooth opaque browns outside of gouache. Quin Purple is such a stunning color and overall this whole batch was a pleasure to swatch out. Thanks Miranda, I appreciate the sentiment and sorry about the tears! I wanted to put something together that would feel like a celebration of having known her, and deal with the loss better by creating something that might make me smile while remembering Cookie's habits. Also some of their earth tones are absolutely magnificent (cyprus burnt umber deep especially) . Thank you for chiming in, I will definitely have to try the Ginger Red as a skin tone! Cobalt Green Deep makes some interesting mixtures, great if you like color separating mixtures. Hand over mouth: woah, I've got some RoSzmal pans coming in... they're going in the FREEZER 😂 thanks for the warning. I don't have that yellow, though. And I really liked that yellow. When that blue and scarlet tried to say "let's mix" the yellow be like "nah"! And it's not a cad?! Color me impressed. (My pure yellows are pretty. They can't hold their own though without some planning.) And it's not opaque! It looks like painting with a rude, bleedy highlighter 😂 ❤️ Love it. Btw I think you sent too much business to Prodigal Son 😭 I went to make another Etsy order and he's selling only powders now because he can't keep up with the orders!. *You DID warn him!* 😂 I don't think he knew how much people respected you. (Note: it's not just the Smalt 200: it's ALL the watercolours he quit making until further notice! He needs to hire some people; I think you made the boy rich and maybe you should get a cut! Congratulations! To him, too! )

Rofl your entire comment is comedy gold, thanks for the chuckles :D You are SO right that yellow 100% screams rude bleedy highlighter, but I can see that being useful when an artist wants some intense yellow (even though it might make you wish you had sunglasses on). I'm so glad people loved the Prodigal Son's PB33 video so much, but it was a bummer he needed to take a break to restock pretty soon after that. I'm waiting on him to get back up and running to show off more of his colors - which hopefully won't shut him right back down lol. I think he plans to be restocked by April. I appreciate your kind words and hope you enjoy your Roman Szmal haul once it gets out of the freezer :)

@@KimberlyCrick Oh that's such good NEWS about Prodigal Son back in the game by April maybe. I felt guilty blowing through some DIY super-granulatings with the Smalt, and I wasted a LOAD of good papers (but with a big fat smile on my face and I'm considering framing some of the sheets!) I was talking with another painter about the W&N PB74 and started to go on about Prodigal Son on Etsy... 😖 went to link it and saw the "no watercolours available" and had a bit of a panic attack. I may have suggested that the W&N is "just fine" 😂 I don't want to be a stingy paint hoarder, so I feel guilty because it's Lent and I should be sharing, but I think I'm going to make sure PSon really knows what a "good supply" is before sharing "the trade secrets". I'm already planning to get a 'healthier' supply of the Smalt, and then I think, this must be what it feels like to be a crack hoe 😭 (No offense to tweakers or crackheads intended.) I can finally sorta see where the "PO49 *_enthusiasts_* " are coming from now.

I want to get all my DaVinci earth colors out to compare, since their earths have got to be the most economical purchase for those living in the USA. I really hope they don't have to raise prices soon - their 37ml for $12 deals are impressive (once dry about $3 a full pan).

@@KimberlyCrick Wow, thanks for mentioning the prices.. I had glanced at the big tubes and thought they were all in the $20 range (which is still a steal), sure enough the earth tones are under $12. DaVinci pans beautifully too, one of the best, smooth and very little shrinkage. I think a general earth tone spotlight is a great idea, bring in whatever brands you have...again there are so many different "flavors", some with exotic names.. it would be great to see if there is really a difference, and if so, what.

Omg I was so excited to see you posted a video of the new Roman Szmal colors, which no one is talking about since Schmincke released their new granulating sets at the same time...which is a bummer bc I love Roman Szmal and they deserve the hype..I ordered 7 of the new colors but after your video I think might order the Quin purple as well. I decided against ordering the Py138 since I already have the DS and Mission Gold version. I also decided not to order the new earth colors (apart from the PBr29 and PY164 ) since I already have so many earth colors from Roman Szmal and multiple other brands. Im most excited about the Cobalt Green Deep and the new orange and red colors (Ive super been into oranges and warm leaning reds this last or so). Anyway great video as always and thanks for sharing. Much love💜

Im sorry to hear youve lost a sweet loving baby. I lost mine 3 years ago and I still have nightmares and dreams of her. Im sorry about the pain you are feeling. My mom told me, when I lost my sweet little kitty and was devastated, that my kitty was probably an angel in disguise-come to help and watch over me in a time I needed that kind of love. And once I grew and no longer needed her- she returned to her place within the stars- where she could watch me happlily until we meet again. My heart goes out to you. Much much ❤

Yes, the Roman Szmal release seemed to be a little buried under the popularity of Schmincke's new colors. Then these went out of stock for almost 2 months so I think a lot of people missed them and may still be waiting. I enjoyed this release, and while all of the colors were beautiful, these new orange and reds really stole the show. I wish we never had to say goodbye to our loved ones, but I try my best to appreciate the time we had. I have a feeling it will be very hard for a long time, and I'll probably always be on the edge of tears when something reminds me of her. Though I try to dwell on the most joyful parts of my time with her as I look back on this little collection of memories. I appreciate your sweet comments, thank you :)

Hi Kimberly! You mentioned that Quinacridone Scarlet is a crystallisation of a quinacridone and a pyrrole. If I am not mistaken, this is the same description as W&N’s Permanent Carmine, which is a quinacridone pyrrolidone. But I believe that Permanent Carmine is more of cool red rather than the mid or warm red of the Quinacridone Scarlet.
@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah they are not the exact same formula, however it appears Old Holland's Blood Red acrylic does use this same type of Quin DPP mixture - probably from the same chemical manufacturer. You're right WN Perm Carmine is much more of a cool red. There are different chemical ratios and heat processes used to alter color, so it may end up being different enough to be a separate pigment code. Winsor and Newton used to classify PCarmine as a PV19, but I believe their pigment manufacturer will be applying for a new pigment code number in the future to better label their variation on this formula (same with the pending transparent orange which was temporarily labeled PO107). In a similar vein, since PV19 can come in a purple leaning or pink rose leaning variation, there's a chance they might get classified similarly by ASTM once the chemical structure has been evaluated. For artist purposes though, Carmine is definitely not a good replacement for Quin Scarlet.

@@KimberlyCrick Hi Kimberly! Thanks for all this information, it really is fascinating! If I may ask, where do you get this information from? Is there a website I can visit to get the latest pigment and ASTM news? Also, how could Permanent Carmine be classified as a PV19? It is my understanding that both versions of PV19 have a different chemical composition to Permanent Carmine; namely, they lack the DPP molecule(s?).

@@awatercolourist I'm working on trying to add info like this into my website because it's so hard to find. Over the last 5-10 years ASTM and pigment manufacturing info has started becoming more and more closed to the public. They often require a membership or corporate account to look at chemical info, so nowadays I spend a lot of time emailing companies directly with pointed questions. Luckily companies like Roman Szmal, Kremer pigments and Golden/Qor have been super helpful and responsive. Winsor and Newton is a much worse company to get answers from, often feeling like their ingredients are a "trade secret" - similarly tight lipped as Daniel Smith. Sometimes they let things slip with hints though, overall a pain in the butt for curious consumers!

@@awatercolourist Regarding your edit asking about DPP in PV19, you are correct - no PV19 should be classified that way which is why one of two things happened here: 1) WNewton has changed their old Perm Carmine formula from PV19 to a new DPP infused combo pigment or 2) It had been mislabeled for some time, so they removed PV19 from the chart and updated tube notes with quin/dpp as the note. I certainly can't rule out either, but I can tell you that WN has a bad habit of jumping the gun on pigment codes, like with the removal of PO107 and just writing DPP later on (they told me that the pigment manufacturer never completed their pigment code registry with ASTM so it never got an official code), but also that their PY119 is far more likely to be PBr11 based on the chemical description, as well as their unwillingness to provide a code for cad free colors and say they are LFI but it turned out they actually used a fugitive red in the cad free orange (sigh). I can only tell you that my old Perm Carmine is at least a few years old and is labeled as PV19.

There are a few rare colors that are Korea only, so you'd have to find them somwhere like Ebay (also the case with their pv102 rare variant of cobalt violet). There's also different versions of colors for import to different countries (some of it has to do with the fact that some countries have different rules about toxic pigment import). I've always been surprised that the cobalt teal pure single pigment is also sold as a mixture if you get it through certain sites. Unfortunately the last few times I've ordered Mission Gold there's been a lot more binder issues, so it makes it less appealing to work hard to find a place to get the right versions.

Hi Kimberly, thanks as always for your super informative videos. I wanted to ask what brand of white gouache you use for details, and whether you use fresh or dried gouache? Also, have you used dr. ph martins’s bleed proof white? I am trying to settle on a medium to use for white details but gouache is giving me some problems and i don’t know if the bleed proof white is good enough. Thanks again ❤️

It sounds like quinophthalone yellow has many of the same properties as Phthalo blue.
@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely some, just not quite the same in regards to out of control flow. Most of my Phthalo paints are a little more like the Quin Scarlet, intense and transparent - yet still controllable to some degree, especially when diluted. While the fine particles are great for flow, without an ox gall additive, I found most brands of Phthalo pb15:3 to still allow for gradient blends in wet washes... or at least not the same level of runaway flow as py138 (this felt unusually unruly to me). This yellow was almost dye-ink like with the feel of the most flowing Qor color and nearly the brightness of a fluorescent. I'm sure it will be great for certain art styles, especially when intensity, abstraction or flow are valued. Happy painting :)

Quin Scarlet looks so interesting! Does it neutralize with Phthalo Blue the way PBr25 or PR175 do? I'm kinda in the market for a new warm red since PR242 seems a little iffy lightfastness-wise in the tints...
@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 2 жыл бұрын
PR242 is definitely iffy in tints, I have switched to PR255 because of the LF superiority of it - or PR108 if I'm not minding opacity and want texture or color separation. Now though... wow this quin scarlet is a game changer if it ends up being more stable than colors like PR242 or PR188 vermilion-esque orange leaning reds. YES - totally does neutralize phthalo blue into a lovely gradiant of paynes-gray to black to brown. This quin/dpp based quin scarlet + phthalo blue green shade pb15:3 makes absolutely magical fully transparent mixtures :D

So sorry for your loss. I have had cats my whole life and choose older ones from the shelter to give them the best life of what they have left. (My backyard is an orchard). I like to practice mixing colors. Which three primary colors from Roman Szmal would you suggest I start with?
@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. If you prefer the most standard mixing colors I'd stick with PR122, PB15:3 and a mid yellow (if you don't mind crazy overpowering, this PY138 would be something you wont find in most other brands). While magenta/pink PR122 options will give you greater mixing range, this new vermilion orange-leaning "quin scarlet" is also one of those "you wont find this anywhere else" colors which might give you the pleasure of experiencing unusual mixtures you haven't seen with standard basic primaries before. Quin Scarlet made intense blacks, paynes greys and brown neutrals when mixed with phthalo blue green shade pb15:3, so worth considering. Help! I've run into a problem with my Roman Szmals. I decided to expand my palette and my new paints have a layer of what I think is wax from the wrapping on the surface.. I think they may have gotten hot in transit from the UK? I can't seem to get it off, water and brush scrubbing does nothing, just beads up. Has anyone run into this and found a solution?
@KimberlyCrick

I just work through it, scrubbing with a wet brush... mine did scrub off. Otherwise I'd just scrape the top with something, like a razor or toothpick. I haven't tried a different approach to getting the wax paper residue off. Every so often it happens to both Roman Szmal and Maimeri Blu pans I order from Jacksons.

Definitely wanted to point out this molten sticky problem - tried to warn anyone in humid areas to put them in the freezer first, otherwise this is what happens. Luckily the last one I show comes off cleanly since it was in the freezer for about 20 minutes, hopefully that will save a few people from getting paint everywhere :)

@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 2 жыл бұрын
That might be fine for an area that is a little more dry than here. I live in an above average humidity environment, so the paints come as a tar-like liquid (really aggressively sticky glue). If you tried to rip it off quickly the wax paper would tear into small shreds. In some humid environments, there is absolutely no way to remove the wax paper without freezing the pans - regardless of how you grab it, or ripping it fast or slow. If you happen to ever move, or have this happen to you on a hot summer day, definitely try the freezer for about 20 minutes :)
