Gary Friedman, author of the best-selling book on this camera, talks about the 15 important things about the Alpha 1 you wouldn't have known if you had only read online reviews. (Which is ironic in a way, since this is an online review.) You can read more about the book at Gary's website, www.FriedmanArchives.com/A1 .
This references an earlier video which talks about how difficult it is to autofocus with the lens stopped down. You can find that video here: • Focus Tracking Differe...
The 15 things discussed in this video are:
1) New assignable functions to control wheels
2) 14-bit RAW all the time. (Not just in certain continuous shooting modes.)
3) Touch-to-focus when controlling with smartphone or with tethered shooting. (This feature has been missing for many years.)
4) 1/500th of a second flash sync speed when in APS-C mode.
5) New "Light" Image Quality Setting
6) Variable shutter function
7) Phase Detect AF at f/22 (okay, you would have known that from online reviews. It's still technically difficult.)
8) LA-EA5 works with screw-drive Minolta A-mount lenses.
9) You can shoot 4K in APS-C mode.
10) Proxy videos can be full HD.
11) Preview Flash images in continuous shooting mode.
12) Some Focus Areas have been renamed.
13) Up to 4x throughput via Wi-Fi (compared to previous cameras)
14) Flexible Exposure Mode
15) EVF Auto Switch not reliable (NOTE: fixed in Firmware v1.10).

This is exactly what I was looking for… a MANUAL (coming from my IT pre-Google days when I’d venture to the Tech Book shop at lunch to buy a book on the software problem I had been dealing with all morning… Switched Nikon Z6 when I realized this last summer that Apple was never gonna support ProRes raw from a Nikon to Ninja in FCPX! Took me a good month to realize the Alpha 1 is just what I needed for Studio shooting theatre 🎭 w/o going Cinema Camera/Lenses. But I’ve been swimming in options hinted at in a number of videos (like Gerald Undone’s 8K internal to 4K external Ninja for - nevertheless - higher quality images!) Hopefully, this book (as this video) will better explain options like Priority Facial Memory detection (so I can avoid having to have a dedicated Focus Puller) Just starting out on an Everest project… think I’ve found a Sherpa at an inn at the foothills….

Tough to troubleshoot things like that via messaging... my first (possibly) condescending question is "is the camera or the IEM app in movie mode?"
@ViceChief
@ViceChief 2 жыл бұрын
@@FriedmanArchives Thanks for that - didn't feel any condescension. The behavior I was seeing was that the shutter button would just enable/disable tracking but never take a picture. I tried every setting/combo I could think of, as systematically as I could. In the end, I installed the IA app on another android phone, and I was able to get the shutter to fire normally. Then, when I connected again with my primary device, operation returned to normal (shutter press takes and transfers a picture). On the problematic phone, I also have Monitor+ installed, an alternative camera control app. I wonder if it could have caused this buggy behavior. I'll post back here if I observe anything interesting. Thanks again for your book, it's been a big help.

As I mention in the book, the A1 shoots stopped down (almost) all of the time, and therefore has more difficulty focusing even under ideal light. Under bad light there should be no expectation of legendary AF performance.

I had the EVF issue in bright sunlight. I was not on auto switch, but had chosen the EVF. It was black as was the lcd. After some research and frustration, I realized that the EVF is an OLED screen and will suffer if left on all the time!!! So it turns off and on depending on whether it senses your face at the camera. So putting tape on the camera to keep the EVF on is not a good idea!!! Please think about unintended consequences when you go about putting tape on your Ferrari!!!

Well, I hit try Overheating Wall (too!) on a studio shoot (cool enough for everyone to wear a sweater) trying Gerald Undone’s suggestion to shoot 8K - internal - to output 4K for Ninja ProRes raw with better quality… no go! Camera shutdown after a few minutes! 😡 Now, it may be that we tried shooting 8K using the internal battery so we switched to an external V-Mount… same problem 🤬 on this brand new camera bought in July 2023 and never used before (other than some minor test stills) Was it residue heat from the internal - yes Sony - battery? All I know is we switched back to 4K w/o the Ninja and got our shots… but really, REALLY pissed to lay out $6K for a camera that needs to be packed in an ice bag for video!?! But hasn’t Sony admitted to the issue (like Nikon finally added the 2nd SSD for their Z-monstrosities) by Sony adding a fan for the FX3! Bought the book… maybe it has some hints on how to troubleshoot this issue… from invoking the warranty if I got a dud to video setting checklist… very disappointed if not feeling cheated. I think Sony added the video support to a “photo” camera and tried to fix known issue by coming out with the FX3 that mitigated the heating issue.
@FriedmanArchives
@FriedmanArchives 7 ай бұрын
Hmmm... that doesn't sound right. On the other hand I only tested in-camera 8K video capture (and it lasted for an hour). Not being a videographer I don't own an 8K external recorder so I couldn't test that. That's the only insight I can provide. Is it defective? I can tell you only that I've never heard anyone else complain about it.
@georgerady9706
@georgerady9706 7 ай бұрын
Getting some feedback… Mark Galer is the Aussy Sony Ambassador… but I can’t C&P his post but it comes down to shooting 8K for “seconds” not “minutes” and not keeping the camera in “standby” mode because the duel processors are still chugging away “counting as your seconds” He agrees the FX3 and other “cinema” cameras have the air cooling designed (and still don’t attempt 8K) and IF one’s primary interest is video “the A1 is primarily a photographer’s camera”
@georgerady9706
@georgerady9706 7 ай бұрын
And those who use an external recorder like the Ninja V (as I do) you can NOT set it to ProRes for 8K from the Sony… you have to choose another codec: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pc9dp65zuK_dZ2g.htmlsi=DLPPYoWmunq9yuaU

6:00 Why does everyone refer to LED lights when talking about flickering lights? The problem is waaaaaaaaay older and yes there are many light sources out there that flicker that are NOT LED based. A light source either stabilizes the AC of the power outlet or not, and if not, it will flicker, easy as that. Has nothing to do with LEDs. This way people think LED is a bad thing, because it introduces new problems, but this is not true.
@FriedmanArchives
@FriedmanArchives 2 жыл бұрын
Back in my day it used to be the domain of fluorescent lights. LED lights are considered a "new" problem because they refresh at a different frequency which happens to interfere with the silent shutter methodology.
@Lofote
@Lofote 2 жыл бұрын
@@FriedmanArchives as said the frequency problem here is the same. It is not a "new" or LED-related problem. We have lots of old school flourescent lights / neon tubes here at the university for example, absolutely long before LEDs were invented as a light source. They have EXACTLY this problem you experience with LEDs here. They just go on and off at 50Hz (europe) or 60hz (US) AC, thats how AC power works and if the light source doesn't "save" some power for the time where there is 0V output, it will be off at that point. Very simple. The reason why the silent shutter shows those strange lines is because it takes longer to read the the sensor than 1/50s or 1/60s, while that happens the light goes off and on and off and on. And so some of your sensors lines see light and some see the off-time. Nothing to do with "synchronsiation", just too slow reading. Stacked sensors are much faster at reading so they have the problem less.
