@@VideoconferencingUSA i agree Brian, although, as a viewer of a number of years, it's readily known and accepted that there will be at least one 'dad joke' per video. Perhaps a *WARNING NOTICE* at the beginning of each video incorporated into the opening credits will prepare new viewers for a comedic trip down memory lane.

Grow Nettles, Comfrey, etc, keep banana peels & make your own fertilizer. It's very easy.

@@krisztinab.4958 I just noticed a stinging nettle in my raspberries. The flower is beautiful. I will cut them off after work tomarrow as I don't want 1 more weed trying to take them over. I will also Google how to cook it. I hear they're quite nutritious

Perhaps not really #16, but I would suggest adding "harvest in a timely manner" to the list. Many gardeners I know (and I've been guilty also!) will get distracted or lazy and leave veg on the plant far too long thereby encouraging pests and missing out on the very reward they have been working to achieve. Great video.

We grew field peas in the same way Bc my dad liked bush beans and not vine. I would be worried about one chocking out the other though.

I love Brussel sprouts!!! Seriously, one of my favorite. Mulching is the key to success in my garden. And over time has completely changed my soil onto a beautiful black, soft, rich, Light soil. Also.....one of my tips is to be a little "lazy", and not clean up my old plants right away..... I have found there are many plants that I no longer have to plant....they self seed and just pretty much replant themselves year after year after year. I can move them. Keep them where their growing and give them away. Plus, the plants that reseed themselves ARE more suited to my yard. For example they are more suited to the microclimate in my yard and they come back even though they're not supposed to. I've also developed my own tomato variety by continuing to grow The Offspring of a hybrid that was planted many many years ago. It is one of our favorite tomatoes

Mark, I love your channel! I am watching from Maine in the USA. I have been disabled for 17 years now, and have started to garden over the last few years. What a blessing it is to get out and do something. It's a great thing. I often over do it, but that's ok as it is good to push yourself. Thanks for the advice.

Most gardeners are very generous in sharing their harvest with others that don't have the opportunity or space to grow their own fruit and veg. Share with local food banks and shelters. I love all of your videos even though Australia is on the other side of the world, plus you're pretty funny.

Oh man, the 10 minute phone overheating issue is real....no question. Even here in Canada if its in the sun, I routinely have to put the phone in the freezer every 10-15 minutes!

My goal this season as a 2nd year gardener is to learn how to be patient when it comes to harvesting. I need to learn to wait til the veggies and fruits mature and ripen and not let my overexcited emotions control my snips and baskets.

Sometimes I’ll harvest tomatoes ahead of time if the animals start eating them . This year I got some solar powered pest repellers of of eBay they are supposed to repel all types of mammals . I turned one on in the house when I first got them and my little dog didn’t know which way to run plus they are rain and weather proof

I think finding joy in gardening goes a long way!!! Years ago I didn't enjoy growing our garden and it just felt like another burden. Now, I find refuge in the garden. I leave my phone and the load of my work day out of it. Such a great way to calm down and just what God has given us and thankful to be able to use our little piece of land to a better benefit. Great video!

@@Selfsufficientme Thanks Mark. An Idea for you: I killed 5+ cucumbers last week by not hardening them (I thought they were hardy enough to take full sun & exposure). Maybe a video about when it is the right time to take plant out of a nursery could be good. Also, thanks for the home steading video... And I mean that as a real thanks and also a negative "thanks" because now I am in deep talks with the wife about a new home. All the best!

I would add pruning to your list! I was listening to this while getting ready for work, so maybe you said that and I missed it. But for me, learning how to prune each different kind of plant has been useful in preventing an early onset in diseases and pests. By the way, thanks for the reminder to get on the pests early! I’ll be picking up a continuos sprayer on my way home from work today so I can start the neem oil I used on last year’s garden!

I just got my balcony veggy garden to grow. I already planted: Salads, peas, garlic, Strawberrys, tomatos (3 different varietys), Chili (or bell pepper, I have no Idea which of the two came out XD) and some squash, leek and zucchini! I used storeboard compost soil, and have liquid fertelizer from nettel on hand. The last thing is btw. an old gardeners trick here in europe. Done for centurys! I sorry for my spelling, but I hope you all understand me :D Cant wait for my first harvest around august! I just remembered: If you want to do some nettle fertelizer, cut the plant down, break it up a little and then drown it in water for around 6 weeks. It might smell not very nice, but your plants will love you for it and it also helps them be stronger in the fight against pests.

I have heard about nettle fertiliser - great tip! I guess it's similar to compost tea but also gives natural pest control qualities. All the best with your balcony garden! Cheers :)

Absolutely! You have to dilute it at least tenfold, otherwise it's too strong. It stinks like hell, but the plants just love a soft tea of this stuff.

My chickens were in UK Avian Flu lockdown this winter. I put them in the greenhouse, on woodchips to make compost. As an experimental “treat” because they weren’t allowed out, I gave them one of my homegrown, home fermented cherry tomatoes every day to perhaps help with their digestive system. Well!!! They laid deep orange yolked eggs all through winter AND blow me down, the fermented tomato seeds survived fermentation AND the chickens’ digestive system and are sprouting everywhere! Blessed.

Had a dead patch of dirt beside the house I just bought. Been following your tips on burying compost and creating a compost pile (we have a giant oak tree that's 300 years old...he likes to help LOL) and I planted Tomatoes this year. Fingers crossed, I think this is going to work! There's lots of worms and the soil is soooo much better! Thanks for the tips!!!

Kind of goes with the companion plants but grow some wildflowers nearby. It will attract both pollinators and bugs that prey on pests. Keeps your working hours down and gives nature a helping hand in a fragmented and/or urbanized world. What's not to like?

I enjoy your videos so much. I always learn more about gardening. Whether its pronounced "mulch"or "mulsh" doesn't matter much when you know what you are talking about.

Growing the soil is SUPER important, those beneficial fungi and bacteria not only aid your plants in getting nutrients but they also protect them from diseases, just like having good gut bacteria helps prevent you from getting sick, not fool proof but it really helps a lot!

Heyo! Love your videos. My friend and I are trying a deep mulching technique using at least a foot of just tree chips (not treated, not colored) its working really wonderfully! Holds moisture so well, and makes weeding so much easier because nothing can come up through the mulch, and anything on top is only rooted in the mulch, so a little pull and a shake. Bam. Weeded
