I am Canadian and in July 2011 me and a group of Canadians were on a Traxx charger bus and our bus crashed in a small community called Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The people who came were like you. People from the community. Our bus rolled and slid down and we were dangling over the cliff and some trees along side was holding the bus up from going over the ledge down down down to the dried up creek that way below us. They secured the bus from going over and then rescued all I think 56 of us! God bless those people. And that town. 8 of us were taken to Hospital by ambulance. All of our personal belongings were left behind on the bus in the rescue. Passports, phones and wallets. Those first responders paid for our medications we needed (as we didn’t have our personal belongings) they contacted the school. It was summer holiday. They opened up the lunch room and brought everyone there and cooked us food and packed us doggy bags and gave us blankets and we rested in the shade in the grass. While they were able to secure the bus and pull it out and get us our stuff. A small community like that does not have a big fire station like in the city I live. Thankfully, those people volunteered their lives in their time and most of them said it was the first time those little pages had ever gone off. That’s how small their community was. ❤ Good for you girl. You will make a difference in someone’s life. I will never forget that experience.

Wow! Wonderful story. Glad things happened as they did. What a wonderful town. You should write a screenplay for Hollywood. I'm sure people would love to hear about your experiences. We need some wholesome movies. David Heavener, Producer, is here on YT. Maybe he'd be interested. He is on-line too.

Im so sorry about your day. Im in australia and saw a dori fish yesterday (not in the wild) . Such a beautiful fish and such a great line to remember on such a day. "Just keep swimming." I say it to myself regularly. I heard so many people say it as they passed the tank. Take care.

Thanks so much Cass. Took your advice and went for a walk while I listened. I’d convinced myself that because of my disability (fused leg from an accident 17 years ago) that I can’t walk fast and I can’t go far. I rely on a walking stick for balance. You gave me the rev up I needed…25 mins in and nearly 5000 steps. Thank you!!!

Cas, I LOVE that you're pushing yourself to help people in emergency situations. You go girl! We can do hard things. Please understand, you have been helping people (hundreds maybe thousands) for years! Helping us understand our need to organize differently and to talk us through the baby steps of the process of digging ourselves out. You help people in very dire situations daily! 🎉 We love you and support you in your personal push to continue your own growth.

Being disabled, I get periodical dysphasia, both expressive (using wrong words &/or forgetting my words/can't think of the word I want to say) and receptive dysphasia (can't understand what someone else says or understands it incorrectly). So about 1.5 years ago, I had the thought 'I wonder if learning sign language would help?' Bc learning a new language creates new neural pathways so.... So I asked my Dr & he said its an interesting question and it certainly couldn't hurt. So I started on my ph, an American Sign Language app daily lessons. A few months later, I was at home talking about something and I couldn't find the English word that I wanted to say but I already knew that sign, so yi signed it and , wouldn't you know it! The word just popped out of my mouth!!! Easy peasy!!!! That's I think when I also decided to start daily Spanish lesson too :) Over 500 days in a row now for both!!! Yeah me!!! Don't think that the Spanish is helping, but it sure comes in a bit handy when Spanish speakers delivery my groceries lol

As somebody who started a PhD in her late '50s, I salute you, Cass! And you make me think of my favorite badass female former firefighter, as well as the firefighters at the fire station that's in my neighborhood. You are being such an amazing model for your daughter -- of lifelong learning, of belonging, of supporting your community, And of knowing that you can be a badass at anything you want, if you love it enough. You can't do it immediately, and you can't be a badass at everything, But if we never took on anything that made us say what was I thinking ... Well. We wind up never experiencing sushi and Indian food! Which would be tragic!!!

I had to face the fear of cancer, not once, but twice. I alsoo had a fire evac and a blizzard evac. My tips for emergencies are that I have spare clothing, medical supplies, and I have an alternate pharmacy near my daughter if I need to refill prescriptions. Most people don't think about these things, but I have to do it. I do pray for all the firefighters and other emergency personnel every day.

Learning new things, expanding your horizon is so good for your brain. Such an interesting podcast. Back 2013 - 2020 I did so many new things, tried powerlifting, tried a triathlon, went back to college and changed careers, did foraging classes, etc.... I'm 50 and overweight, but it didnt stop me. I got a bit lost over the last few years, ready to dust myself off and get back to me.

Thank you for this. I actually paused your video, went and got my old Gazelle (not the animal, the work out machine) and set it up in my living room in front of the TV. I turned your podcast back on (I don't watch podcasts btw) and glided back and forth for over a mile on it. Does it really fit in my apt living room, no. But I live alone so who cares. I just got home from visiting my family on vacation. And only one of my family probably ever tried sushi or shopped at a different store or listened to different music, in the last 30 years. And I thought at 66 and having lived in different parts of the country, and tried different foods and clothes and hair color then they have I was 'braver", but at 66 I'm actually stuck in the same rut, only in a different state. Insanity is the act of doing the same thing but expecting a different result. Thank you for the inspiration today. I've enjoyed your videos for awhile now and as a Bee you've helped with that side of my life. Now you've added "learn something new today " to my list. 😊

One of the scariest moments of my life was when I had a kitchen fire, and the fire department did arrive. And the scariest part of the fire episode was when I was watching a firefighter on my roof, with his chain saw, ready to cut my roof open. Fortunately, that didn't happen; they were able to put out the fire, And it is an important point that you made, that maybe the guy on my roof was super-scared too. Maybe people who had trained were so scared that they did not continue in their fire-fighting quest. Maybe if people don't try we would not have fire-fighters at all. So I was sitting there watching this in a doctor's office as they diagnosed me with a broken toe!!! Gave me a stupid shoe and told me to stay off it, oh great. But maybe I can go to the gym and do upper-body and swimming in the next few weeks. No 5-K training this month, but no reason to stop altogether. Thanks 🙂 All the best in your firefighter journey.

From perimenopause and beyond, I think it's prudent to take a page from Chinese women -- we must get over the stigma of women lifting weights. From what I know of it (not much), Chinese women begin lifting weights at perimenopause because it's the most efficient way to stay in shape. We naturally have less muscle tone than men, and raising our resting calorie burn is very helpful for staying fit. I find it so boring though -- I absolutely love cardio. I'm going to try rock climbing though -- a double duty task to take me out of my comfort zone (I'm terrified of falling) AND increase my muscle tone.

Also important to not overdo your workouts and space them out in the week so you get adequate rest. That might look like a day on, a day off. Or even a day, then two days off. Probably you only need to work out one or two times a week. Let your body heal between workouts.

Yes girl yes! I did this also. Hearing you talk about all the details in training for it brings it all back. I also went to school to be a paramedic and needles make me woozy.😂 I own a small business for 22 years and there are no days off(pet boarding). 💯 agree with you about stretching yourself and just face your fears and challenges. Way to go girl! This is another reason I love you. I have pushed my self out of my comfort zone so much and it is scary and hard but at the end of it it is awesome. I will say I am 52 now and have slowed that down in some ways except that I finally now have 3 babies that we adopted. My youngest is 5. I became a foster mom 1 month before my 42nd bday. My babies fill my heart! I have a couple of autoimmune diseases and I have pain daily. I foster dogs/cats. My oldest babe is on the autism spectrum and has auditory processing disorder, delayed speech expression and sensory processing disorder etc. Among so many other things, he loves people and sports. Which is not the typical definition of what is portrayed to the public of those on the spectrum. He is a literal light too all he interacts with. I am so proud of him. My two youngest are 5 & 6 and so far have been diagnosed with ADHD. They are very challenging at times. But they are amazing people with great hearts also. Studying ADHD and trauma has brought me to being evaluated and diagnosed with ADHD at 50 years old. It's all hard. But at the start of the next painful day I get up and do it all again. Yes I cry more than I would like and worry about my abilities to handle it all but I'm doing it. I would love to mentor other women. I am struggling in the friend category right now but I am going to work on that. Friendship is vital to health I am learning. Thank you for being you and sharing your life. You are an inspiration!

I sooooo happy that you found that mind set shift!!!! Something too that helped me through the difficult part, I used to jog every other day, NO EXCUSES, 3.5 miles. And whenever I didn't feel like it I would think in terms of "just ONE more!" 'I can just put on my sneakers'. 'I can just go outside'. Then... 'I'm already outside, I can just START jogging'. Then when I start to get tired... 'I can go just 1 more street'. Then as I got more tired... 'I can go just 1 more driveway'. (But then in that part of town where I jogged, it was really ritzy so the drivways were pretty far apart) So as I got even more tired... 'I can go just 1 more minute.' Then turned into... 'I can do just 1 more step'. Eventually I 'just 1 mored' myself the ENTIRE 3.5 miles until I was FINISHED WITH MY JOG!!!!!! Our thoughts can reallyyyyyy create our outcomes!!!!!

Cassie, my condolences for your grandmother. This podcast is completely different than I thought it would be about. I admire you so much for challenging yourself to do something as difficult as becoming a volunteer firefighter! The idea of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is so true and one I have thought of so many times. Maybe because of this podcast I will want to push myself to lose weight, learn how to swim properly and/or learn to grill. Thank you for making this podcast! Almost every county and many cities have a department for emergency planning. You can go to City Council meetings or events at fire departments to learn about them. I went from full time family caregiver for a disabled husband to training others in how to set up an emergency shelter for people displaced by flooding or other disasters. It is so rewarding and needed. I encourage everyone to look around and see what is happening nearby and volunteer!

Love to you and your family, and may your grandmother's ancestors welcome her with open arms. Two more ideas I can add to improve your own life, and potentially many others: Get trained in Mental Health First Aid. (search the phrase since yt hates a link.) I did in 2022, and the best thing I learned from it is how to talk with someone in crisis. What also came with my training but I don't know if it's stanard... Get trained in how to use narcan (and carry it). It's more than just using the spray, but you could literally save a life.

I've decluttered several areas in my house and made 2 trips to Goodwill. You have helped me grow and think about the stuff I put in my home differently. You have helped me understand that others organize differently and that's okay. I am so grateful I discovered you. I've now begun the overwhelming process of decluttering and organizing my classroom. Your story of how you've become the person that you are right now is so inspiring. By the way, according to Stacy Sims women our age should be lifting heavy sh.. Look her up, she's got excellent advice for pre and post-menopausal women.

Yes to learning CPR, and keep your skills updated too. For my whole life I did office work; I had really wanted to try nursing but my mother talked me out of it - and anyway, I was needle phobic, so that was that. Many years ago I took a couple of years off after something awful happened; I needed to rebuild my life and then tried going back to my old line of work. I just couldn't do it - mentally, that is. I eventually took a temporary job potwashing that ended up lasting over three years, and....I loved it. I was bloody good at it too (very pressured, honestly!) Later I was offered the chance to work at the local hospital as clinical support worker. This would include learning to cannulate; like Scarlett O'Hara thought, "I'll think about that tomorrow". Not only did I learn to cannulate but I became good at it and had a knack for calming patients - because I knew what needle phobia was like. I even allowed colleagues to practise on me. This wasn't the only push out of my comfort zone - some of the things I've done make me come out in a cold sweat to think about them; but they worked. I'm now retired and realise how much I miss that push....something to think about. Thank you, Caz.

Cas, I'm 73 and grew up listening to my parents playing country music all the time. I hated it and refused to listen to it because it sounded twangy and "crying in your beer bluesey". In 2005 I happened to be riding with my husband on his motorcycle that had a radio. He had it on a new country station which sounded modern. Trace Adkins came on with his (then) new song “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”. It was a catchy, fun song and still is. You can find it on You Tube if you haven't heard it yet. I think you'll enjoy it too. My condolences to you and your family for the loss of your grandmother.

I am a small frame, sometimes overweight, sometimes underweight career wildland firefighter for the US Forest Service. Being a SMART firefighter outweighs being a strong firefighter every day. I could never do a pull-up, but I was always the leader in a critical situation. You don’t have to drag the bodies out of the burning building, but you CAN be the engineer who keeps the water flowing, or the firefighter that that comforts the affected. Your goal should be to be the engineer!

As for fewer people volunteering, as far as I'm aware, volunteering has always been elder-heavy. Older people who are beginning to have fewer commitments deciding to volunteer instead, because the kids are out of the house, maybe they are retired, or even just being able to let go one of the three jobs they were doing before, because all or most of their kids are no longer relying on them financially. The people between 25 and 50 need to build a career, look after children, and often from about their thirties they're looking after some of their parents, too. There is not much time or energy left to volunteer with. So I am reticent to say "people no longer volunteer".

Cas, the start of you 15 things... I'm okay at. I have also found sometimes its easier to try something new with a friend. But #15 oof ! I do a vision board with my yoga studio and there are some big goals. Ive just had life take plenty of twists along the way that I'm afraid to dream too big on some things. I plan to do a marathon one day and as ive done one over a week and over 100 miles walked or jogged in a month i dont doubt my physical capabilities. Its the time and bandwidth to train specifically. And I'm slow. Thank you for being an inspiration and offering inspiration!❤🎉

Road rallies are SOOO FUN. I haven't done one in ages because they stopped doing them in my area. And no, I don't have the bandwidth to organize one as much as I'd like to... That said, I have given sushi enough attempts. I don't hate it but I don't get it.

When I was a kid, my Dad was (constantly) doing construction on the house. I remember at one point he raised half of the roof. And he (I don't really know HIS reason why lol) took us 3 kids out there (2nd story house now on that side of the house probably more like 2 & 1/2 stories high) he took us out onto the roof through the hole still in the wall/part of the roof to have a picnic/ eat lunch on the roof!!!! He had nailed a 2*8 or 2*10 board level enough for us to sit on (bc the roof was soooo pitched now!) I remember my sister was sooooo scared that her legs were bent at the knees trying to be lower! But, even though I'm actually scared of heights I was up on that roof all the time, helping him! I LOVED construction! I even took a class in highschool (I was the only girl in the entire class, actually on that entire wing of the tech school lol, but in the entire class I thought was cool bc I got my OWN BATHROOM!!!!! I brought in my cute skirts and outfits to change into after class before normal highschool started and i used to just leave all my hair stuff on the bathroom sink and it was exactly as I left it the next day!!!! Lol). Although my tool belt and tools for class, boots, etc I DID lock up in my locker in the workspace;) When I was focused on something else, I didn't focus on being scared of the height of the rooftop! Also, when I was volunteering at the Jr science museum & zoo, there was a HUGE SCAREY spider glass-enclosure. And I'm TOTALLY ARACHNOPHOBIC!!!! The movie Arachnophobia was the SCARIEST movie I've ever seen in my entire life!!!! I've probably seen it about 12 times and I STILL jump (although I don't think I scream anymore) even though I know exactly what is going to happen AND WHEN it's going to happen!!!! Lol That being said, when I was at that zoo, at first I either would walk around the long way, so I wouldn't have to walk past their enclosure. Or I would walk down the hall where they were, SQUISHING myself into the wall opposite them to get as far away as possible and practically running by. So I decided to stop that by desensitizing myself to spiders😊 I started by just standing squished against the wall opposite them, with my heart racing a million miles a minute, staring at them, for a few minutes. After more than several times, my heart wasn't racing as much. So i started squeezing myself against the wall less, then less still, getting closer and closer until I could FINALLY walk past them without feeling like my heart did anything different!!!! (After several weeks that I volunteered there during my college training to become an RVT, for animals NOT spiders, lol) Now, whenever I see one in my house it bothers me MUCH less than they used to before that desensitization I put myself through!:) I feel like this is an extreme lesson for our comfort zones and what we can do when we put our minds to it! Im still scared of spiders but imagine if I i had had even more time at that zoo set up for additional desensitization? I might have been able to actually be able to imagine touching or holding one someday as my ultimate final graduation test! Lol Yuck!

Cass, love you and your stories. I feel somewhat like you in that I am always pushing to try new things. I'm 68 now, 8 yrs retired but working as an office admin for a financial advisor group. Constantly learning how to help manage our retirement funds while earning and helping others. In the past, I went to night school when my kids were elementary and middle school age hoping to go to nursing school. Couldn't afford to quit work to do the necessary day classes (back then) but instead volunteered for a free clinic - managing and scheduling office and medical volunteers. Before that when my kids were in preschool, I was on the Board of Directors for that preschool, for the past 20 some years I've been involved with the volunteer management of my little church. I love reaching out and learning new things, quite the opposite of my always stay at home husband. I think his reticence is what pushes me to reach out, go places, see things, meet people, go to concerts. I'm in a very different place than you are as my kids are grown and gone. Never stop reaching out, learning and doing. But my downfall is my home, I love listening to your videos and podcasts. But I sit here and don't get it done in my home. Hoping for one day!!! Love your messages, Cass.

Had a similar experience, at my church. There was no cantor, no music. I used to sing at my small town church, 20 years ago. Never a soloist. Started because the priest insisted, was really scared and bad. Eventually, got competent at it and other better people joined.

It also allowed me to realize I can give myself credit for having done a few things on your list (tried rock climbing in BC, fell but did not get seriously hurt. Had no intention of trying it, saw my husband do it and thought, you have to try. And I love it, I am in my 60’s). You also encouraged me to do a few things that I have not done. Thank you. My fiance is Egyptian and his mom and most of his family speaks only arabic. As a swede I am used to be able to travle and english has always worked for me. Now I get out of my comfort zone trying to communicate with his mother with the few arabic words and phrases I can and body laungage and that is not easy since it makes me feel stupid. His sisters feel out of their comfort zone speaking english with me since they normally never use it. Also trying to help cooking food with them that I am compleatly clueless about is also out of my comfort zone… It somehow works out and we all end up having fun and they love that I try and they love me more for trying.

I am so grateful for everything I have ! Happiness is hard for me as I have some anxiety so I’m always “ on guard” ..If I say I’m not happy I feel so guilty ..If I say I’m going to make myself happy , I think about people in my family who are unhappy and it just feels wrong .. Like too good .. I know I sound weird right now but it’s honest 😊

It doesn't sound weird at all. I often feel shame about having good things happen to me too. I try and catch myself having those feelings and remind myself that I work hard on self improvement, and I don't need to feel bad. That doesn't mean it always works though. You are not alone with this struggle.

Cas, I recently started watching your videos on organizing and decluttering. I love this podcast - it made me stop and think about my life and thinking I should volunteer. One idea I thought about was driving people to cancer treatment. I am 82 years old and I don't think I could be a volunteer fireman. You are doing great things. I heard you mention Terry Fox and that you live in Canada. Where do you live? I was born and raised in Lethbridge, AB and also spent time in BC. My husband was American so we moved to the States. He passed away and now I live in Iowa. Love your videos and I will watch them all.

Cass, first of all, my condolences for you Grandma. I'm sending you and your family a virtual hug right now and hope you can feel it. As for the topic of your video... can i just say... I LOVE YOU. 💕 A few of the things you listed, I've been doing for a long time (for example trying new food), and it's always almost turned out awesome. But, also, many of the other things on your list, I've tried much more recently, because i've had a similar mind shift, and you are so right on all of them. Totally worth exploring my own town in ways I hadn't before. Totally worth learning new things, totally worth trying things i'm scared of. And there's still some things on your list that I haven't ever done. I think i'm gonna talk to a stranger today. Which... doesn't scare me. But i'm an introvert, so it feels WEIRD. But I WILL DO IT! Thank you for all the suggestions. You are the best, and you are SO inspiring! 💕 can we add to your list? I would add: teach somebody something they didn't know (maybe a skill like knitting, or computer related or teach a kid to swim etc.) - it'll help the other person and it'll make you feel good

This is such an incredibly powerful and inspiring episode. Funny enough, the moment I saw it pop up and pressed play, I cracked a huge smile and thought to myself, "She makes my life better." I hope you feel my gratitude! What you're doing with the volunteer firefighting is nothing short of amazing. Is this the same grandmother with the, ahem, purse at the baby shower story? My partner and I still laugh about that regularly, so if that's the one, know that she's in our hearts! ❤️ Sending our condolences and love.
