Vivian, A gentleman commented that he was not gay and, in fact, had a girlfriend, and he appreciated your contribution. Well, I, too, am a hetero-sexual male that appreciates the power of words and always seek elegance in my communications. It was Maya Angelou who said that "the right word is the most dangerous and powerful thing there is, for it can change the heart, the mind, the world." I, too, thank you for your elegance addition.

Good for you! It makes me sad, though, that you had to qualify it by saying you aren't gay and hv a gf. Of course men can be interested in elegance, and shd be! And I find nothing sexier than a well-dressed man who smells great and knows how to treat a woman like a lady. There's nothing to apologize for in that. And your lady is, or will be, one blessed woman. All her friends will wish they were she.❤

Also, may I make a suggestion? I hv a great vocabulary, and I learned most of it by reading . Great literature, or even fiction/non-fiction/history or arts books written by authors of wit and intellect gave me context and usage of so many words that were unknown to me. Reading opened that world to me. If available, a library card and borrowed books are free privileges. Why not try them, if there's a lending library nearby? Blessings. 🕊

I have to admit that when I saw the title of your video I was both intrigued and put off mainly because there are so many people on KZfaq claiming to be professionals in a certain niche. Since I was so intrigued I viewed the video and I’m grateful for your worthwhile insight and work that you put forth into this video. About half of these terms are used in my daily life already but the remaining terms I definitely need refreshment on their usage. I’m very pleased that you care about the quality of language that we use as I was beginning to think it was becoming a lost art form.

When I was a young man I realized I had good manners, but my father was a Blue collar worker and I knew I was missing something. My mother was an elegant lady, but As a Black man we tend to have a more rough exterior the culture pushes this on us. So I actually took an etiquette class. I was the only Brother in the class but it elevated me from the boots to the crocket and Jones and bespoke shoes Armani suits And bespoke suits from the Bronx to living on Central Park west. I will also tell you that I do like the fact that I can move in both worlds. The words you are using only works in the world of elegance or In upper middle class. It will get one killed in the hood. I do appreciate your elegance you are a beautiful and graceful lady. Best wishes.

"When in Rome do as the Romans do". We were taught to speak the language of the group you are with - as long as you don't violate your own personal ethics AND never making others feel uncomfortable. The world is getting smaller. We have to move in lots of worlds to be successful. Be in any world but be of no particular world. It's okay to bring class to any situation you are in without being out of place in any. I love hanging in the hood but have never had to curse or use foul language. It's about accepting and loving people where and how you find them.

I was taught on ordering food in a restaurant to say, "I would like the Cobb Salad, please". I feel sad for the waitperson when someome says, "bring me" or "I want" or "I'll have". Perhaps it is just me, but these examples sound demanding and demeaning. I was also taught to say "thank you" when my food is served, or my water refilled. Seems good manners are declining.

I would like to say thank you for sharing this video. I grew up with a very elegant mother, who always emphasized the need to be polite to everyone, and in her words “always be on your best behavior” no matter where you are, or who you’re with. That’s what I think manners are, making others feel comfortable around you. It is time that this lesson is taught again. Certainly this generation and everyone can use a refresher course in good manners. And speaking eloquently is lovely. I always want to surround myself with people that will elevate me. Bravo.

I was born and bred/raised in Africa. Some of us attended schools in British protectorates. My grandparents were British born, hence my parents had a very good command of the English language as do many African born people irrespective of race colour or creed, yet we still master other languages. We sure are different, our manners are impeccable. Why do Americans have a disdain for foreign dignity and proper languages presented. Speaking properly starts at home. If not taught from the cradle sure does impact you in life and it’s decision making. I love my British /African accent❤️😄🇿🇦🇮🇹🇳🇿🇮🇳🇨🇳🇦🇺🇹🇷🇸🇿🇪🇸🇱🇰🇰🇪🇫🇷🇧🇼🇲🇦🇹🇭🇺🇬🇩🇪🇱🇸.

I think you have the right idea but just a nice word here and there will not give someone a pass. Being polite is the epitome of class, glad you began with politeness. I recommend watching 1940s movies about the upper class will help with phraseology and vocal inflection. Also take a few lessons in how to speak, elocution lessons are well worth the price. This in addition to your informative videos. My husband, son of an Ambassador, royalty and a wealthy businessman, did not see me but heard me speak first. He tells the story to everyone of hearing an intelligent, cultured voice argue a case before a government official. He said he had to turn around to see who owned that voice. Fortunately for me, a practice of careful dressing and maintenance (nothing fake, trim and conservatively outfit) finished the presentation, he asked for my business card and described a legal issue he needed assistance with. He later confessed that it was love at first sight. One never knows who is listening. Keep up your good work of refinement for ladies, many do not have the benefit of family or education for preparation, yet long to reach higher social levels. ❤

YESSSSSS PREACH! This generation doesn't seem to appreciate or understand the importance of mixing elegant conversing with the net income... all they care about is the net income part.. and then wonder why certain "classy" individuals still considering them to be "trashy" despite having a hight net income....! I for example, don't have a very high net income at the moment, but I still happen to classify myself as more elegant and dignified than many of my aggressors who continue to wonder why I don't consider them to be on MY level despite them having more income than me...

Question. Where is elegant speech a goal and to whom do you address it? Most citizens are alive. Their appearance is not very elegant. Their hair and pants are not real elegant. Why would I want the grocery store clerk bagging my food to sound elegant. Ours is not an elegant world, not since Mrs Astor died. There are so few people I would desire to sound elegant to; not even a Pope would make my list. Maybe meeting some Queen of England type would bring out the elegant speech in me, but how fake is such a situation? It's all for show. Show, of course, is what elegance is about. A beautiful home can be elegant, when seen. Jackie-K made opera-length gloves elegant. Mrs Obama was always so well dressed at State Events, she made an elegant impression, without opening her mouth. So elegant, that girl.

Google thinks it's elegant to change my words to different words. I said "most people are slobs" which emerged from Google, that arbiter of crap, as "most people are alive." It's entirely possible to be an alive slob, trust me, but that was not my choice of words, exactly.

Madam you are like a breath of fresh air! I am a firm believer in using words such as these in my daily conversations as our English language is so full of such interesting words that I never have understood why people just use the basic language. I do not feel that it gives me an air of superiority or any other stature of importance towards others, just a feeling that hopefully, others will also expand their vocabulary, for the most interesting book to read is the Oxford DICTIONARY, i REALISE THIS MAY NOT BE EVERYONE'S CUP OF TEA THOUGH!! I have just come across your channel and listening to you, well all I can say is that it is brilliant!! These are all words already in my vocabulary. It's the way my parents spoke. I also started reading at a very early age and, as everyone knows, you pick up many new words when reading. I did not like stumbling over a new word and not knowing what it meant, so every time that happened I grabbed the dictionary. You have given excellent advice and I hope the newest generation listens. It's rather appalling how little schools emphasize vocabulary, diction, spelling, and punctuation these days.

Thank you for the inspiring ideas. Regarding words such as "contrite", I must say that while elegance in speech is desirable, successful communication (i.e. communicating the intended meaning accurately) comes at a precedence. Before employing a word in your speech you must make sure that it will most likely be understood by your interlocutor. The aim is not to distance oneself. You yourself mentioned that the aforementioned word is seldom used. I am an educated person; yet this was my first encounter with "contrite". How many people here are familiar with it? I just thought I would point this out.

That word got me thinking that some of this advice doesn't really fly in the US. Some people wouldn't know what that word means, and others would just be surprised someone was using it. It would sound like someone learned English but doesn't have much practice speaking it.

Many of the words we know, but application is key. I thought it was was a good list of familiar words and how and when to use them properly. I know people that are not quite as well-read or astute, but appear to be bc they are intentional and strategic with their limited vocabulary, and they are often called on to give speeches etc. This video was very exquisite and timely. Perhaps, you will create more similar ones.

In response to the above statement, the word "exquisite" is defined as as an adjective pertaining to something "flawlessly beautiful & delicate ". Would that not pertain to an object in the fine arts rather than an erudite video? As for Woman of Elegance, in the words of the incomparable Marilyn Monroe. "Thank you ever so...". Sadly we must look to the generation of Jackie Kennedy, & Grace Kelly to find a standard of elegance. Carry on with this website! You are filling a need for the current generation!! Bravo!

You are the Queen of Magnificent, Indeed. You delivered this material exquisitely. Moving forward, I will add these vocabularies to my daily speaking. I have not used whimsical before; I will add it to my spoken words. Thank you.

A much needed platform in this rude and illiterate time. I feel that impeccable manners and elegance were once held in higher regard and were more desirable than they are today. You are quite elegant and I hope you get the following you deserve. Thank you for the gentle reminders! I am taking notes and subscribed to your channel. I am looking forward to hearing what else you have to say.

This is the first time I've come across your channel. I so admire your style of communication. You are not only elegant but eloquent. Almost all of these words are a part of my vocabulary. The only word I lack knowledge of is #10. I had never heard the word bespoke before. Whimsical and whimsy are frequently used in the interior design realm so I tend to avoid those words and replace them with frolicsome. Along with polite words, using proper grammar also makes one ostensibly more elegant. In lieu of asking "can I go or can I have" perhaps ask "may I go" or "may I have". Also when ordering a drink or food at a coffee shop or an eating establishment instead of saying "I would like" ask "may I have."

Thank you! I've tried often to discern why women like Diahann Carroll and Nancy Wilson conveyed that sense of elegance. Now, looking at some old interviews, I notice that their usage of particular words is a great part of it.

This is a great idea. In my opinion, courtesy and kindness together are the things that make society -- any society -- work. Can't get along without them. I think we've had numerous lessons about this in recent years.

Hello Vivian , i have been watching your videos for almost a year now and i have improved a lot . You nourish and feed our minds with elegant words in this video which can be used in our day to day conversation and regarding the term ostensible it reminds me of my Law school days when we studied about ostensible owner in benamy topic of Property Law 😊 . Nevertheless, I'm from India and i love watching your youtube channel and also Urania's youtube channel " Level up journey" .

What a great idea‼️ I'm so glad you thought of it. This is so needed. I like the words you mentioned. I've always been interested in word choices. My father had a great vocabulary. We all need a refresh in vocabulary💕 You remind me to use the words you mentioned and you make me want to be more conscientious of words I use on a regular basis. I love changing words from time to time. Thank you for this and looking forward to seeing you again.

I just came upon your channel I'm sure not by chance. Only this morning I was pining for the mannerisms, dress, speech, and refinement that was found in the past but not so much in recent decades. I love watching old B+W movies of the 30's and 40's as well as Jane Austen and it is so sad to see how how much we have lost in this area. I decided only this morning i would try to improve in certain ways including in my speech by incorporating more polite words into my own vocabulary.

Vivian, I admire you and your show! A long time ago, here in California, (that I love so much) this show about manners, etc.was introduced, if I remember correctly, Mrs. Hilton from the Hilton hotels was the one conducting it. The show didn't take long at all to disappear. Not too many viewers, I guess. I hope in this new era your show doesn't go away.

This was lovely. Even listening to your style of speech was a pleasure to my ear. Many podcasters are loud, braying, grating and I cant listen to them for long. Others, flat, mundane, boring and put me to sleep. Your voice was lyrical and intriguing, making me want to follow your line of thought. All that being said, I find I do use most of these words when speaking or writing though a few, like bespoke, Ive meant to look up forever, but never did. I love words, their power and flow, their ability to create images and meaning when put together in certain ways. Im guilty of using 'maybe,' but really like, 'perhaps.' Perhaps, I shall substitute that in the future. Thank you for this thoughtful post!❤
