Good comparison as always Ed. Greetings from the UK. I have been watching your reviews for some months now. I like that you give a shot to all of the mics that you can, even those that are insanely cheap with some being less than $45.00 £30.00. The reviews are always informative and help with making choices. Are you lucky enough to be able to keep some of the mics that you are reviewing ?. I remember a while ago your saying that you would love a Neumann TLM103. last week I saw your review on the TLM102 -TLM103 and one other Neumann that I can't remember the model of right now. I hope you did get to keep the 103 that you have been longing for, for some time.

Everything has diminishing returns. After one point the higher tiers offer so little in return for the money, but people choose them because they are slightly better, they are the best of the best, even tho the best of the best is like only 5% better than it's budged tier counterpart.

Uh so 1 the 1040 is more open with sound stage 2 the smaller one has no warmth and is probably fet so just a smudge harsher as far as +2k mics go it's a beast it's a better overall mic than a manley but I like manleys look and sound more I will say ur not as inspired by that tube as u think u would be with the 1040 lol

I can barely hear any difference at all 🤷🏿‍♂️. And yes, I'm using headphones. In any case, there is no one in the world who can convince me to spend $3500 on a microphone, not even if I was rich. The only time the differences are extremely apparent to me is with the really cheap mics, like sub $100, but most of the time I don't hear any differences between expensive and cheap mics that have similar frequency response charts, sometimes I do, and at that point, which one you prefer comes down to personal preference and the oh so important question of: "Is this mic worth $2000 more than the other".

I've been doing small studio production and recording since 2006. At this point, the only barrier for artists is good songwriting. The tools to make good music have gotten so affordable that the differences are sheer nuance and no longer about quality of sound.

The $3,500 one sounds a tad cleaner (clarity), while adding a slight warm, analogue quality. I would still much rather buy the $150 one and add some tube saturation plugin to be honest.
@Ezerlate
@Ezerlate Жыл бұрын
the difference in price isn't just about sounding quality, the 1040 is a way more versatile microphone, due to it's different polarisation pattern, the combo between fet and Tube and the warm, dark and satureted preset. when getting that microphone u have more control on the sonic aspect therfore it can fit more application. But i still agree the 150 mic is doing really great for this kind of vocals a great choice for bedroom producer who want that crisp lewitt high end
@esahm373
@esahm373 Жыл бұрын
@@Ezerlate Most engineers have no need for different polarisation patterns. It's not like you record with various polarisation settings all the time, usually you record (eg) vocals and use one particular polarisation for that purpose, not different ones.
@Ezerlate
@Ezerlate Жыл бұрын
@@esahm373 I’m just sayin if u want to use it for a vocal in one session and use it on a piano or with a band the next session. You might appreciate the possibility of selecting your polarity and switch from fet to tube. Never talked about changing the polarity during a recording.
@esahm373
@esahm373 Жыл бұрын
@@Ezerlate That's fair. I would rather get two of the 150 bucks microphones rather than getting one 3,500 mic if I need polarity. Why do you imply the mic that has more bang for the buck was a "bedroom" mic?

@Ezerlate Жыл бұрын
@@esahm373 well i find Lewitt under the 440 flex having to much boost in the high end. I'm with Net Doma. I can fully appreciate the build quality and feature set. It's really frickin' cool. Seriously. But listening to the comparison in my studio on my Bose Bluetooth speaker, which is better than what most people will be listening on, it will be difficult to hear the difference in a mix for the massive difference in price. Bump up to a LTC 440 Pure and get tracking...
@commonsense5188
@commonsense5188 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I listened on a pair of Avantone cla-10a's and a pair of Genelec 1030C and while there might have been the very slightest of differences, for instance the 1040 having just BIT more body, I see no reason, whatsoever, to spend the extra 3K+ for the 1040. A simple EQ could get them to sound virtually indistinguishable to the vast majority of listeners and once placed in the mix, I think even extremely "trained" ears would have a hard time pinpointing which is which in a blind shootout. Those claiming there are massive differences are fooling themselves. I'm with you, if you're looking to go into the Lewitt line, perhaps bump up the 440, or if you're feeling spicy and have some money to burn, grab the 840. I see no reason for the 1040.
@good4sound

@@commonsense5188 I just recorded a mic shootout the other day with my Lewitt 440 Pure, my United Technologies Twin87 ($699) and my JZ Microphones Amethyst ($899). I recorded them through a Cranborne Audio Camden EC2 Preamp into an UAD Apollo clean line input. I have to say that I have really been digging this Twin87, but although the Amethyst sounded a little better, the 440 Pure sounded the best to my ears, At least on my voice on a modern rock song. So basically, the $250 mic won this round. Save your money...
@commonsense5188
@commonsense5188 Жыл бұрын
@@good4sound Interesting. That's the thing with mics in particular. You just never really, truly know what mic will be "the one" until you actually get your hands on it. I've used various mics over the years and I can confidently say that as long as you don't buy a complete POS usb mic, you're pretty much going to be good to go if you know how to mix. With that said, yes, some mics "sound better" than others on certain voices, but I believe that's more important for those wanting to get it right at the source so to speak. Once you factor in mixing, the water gets murky. There have been countless shootouts where even seasoned pros couldn't decipher what was the expensive piece of equipment and what was the cheap piece. Anyway, currently my mic selection is a TLM 102, Warm Audio WA-8000, and a Warm Audio CX12. I have nothing negative to say about any of them. They all get the job done so to speak. I recently got curious about the Lewitt line which brought me here just out of curiosity sake. Having said that, I would be lying if I said I didn't often think about selling my mics and just buying a decent mid line condenser and calling it a day and pocketing the rest of the cash, as once it comes to mixing, I've made many different kinds of mics work and at this stage, I only record myself and really have no need for more than one vocal mic. I mean seriously, I think at this point after all these years I could get away with a Lewitt 240 or a AKG 214 etc just for sake of argument for the gear snobs. I mean think about it, out of the 3 I have which one do you use? They all sound good, they all 3 have difference voicings of course, but as I said, once it comes time to mix, those differences become moot. WHY do I have 3 vocal mics when all I record is myself? Gear lust is a real thing, that you often don't appreciate in all it's hell until after the fact. I mean, seriously, I have those 3 mics, and depending on which one I use, I then run that into a BAE 1073 mpf, into a Wa2a, into my Audient ID22. Could I do just fine running say, a lewitt 440 (just an example) into the pres on my Audient ID22 and call it a day? Sure. Are there benefits to having the BAE preamp and the Wa2a compressor? Yes. Are they subtle? Yes. The thing I'm getting at is, if someone reads this and you only plan to record yourself, don't waste your money on more than one mic, and don't spend a boatload on said mic, don't worry about unnecessary hardware etc. Just get a solid, decently priced mic with good build quality that will last, a decent interface and TREAT YOUR ROOM. If you do just those basic things and you can at least half ass mix, you're well on your way to quality recordings. This wasn't intended to be a rant, but here we are.
@good4sound
@good4sound Жыл бұрын
@@commonsense5188 I couldn't agree more. I have the aforementioned 3 mics and a Slate Digital ML-1. I have definitely gone down the gear lust rabbit hole, but in the end I usually grab whatever is already mounted on the stand and start recording. Just like The Beatles did. If the sound of the source (acoustic guitar sounds too boomy, for instance) I may change mics. I may back it off. I may EQ the crap out it. I may just hide it in the mix if it's not the primary instrument. I have 2 Schoeps CMIT-5u's that I use on a daily basis, but they serve a specific need and they sound fantastic. But for studio work, $300-500 buys so much these days.
@commonsense5188
@commonsense5188 Жыл бұрын
@@good4sound Exactly. I would like to add in one more little anecdote for those who may be new to this and hey, you might agree or have come across similar instances yourself. But as I was sitting here reflecting on this little conversation it made me think back to when I started recording seriously. It was back in 2006 and I ran out to guitar center and bought a Sterling ST66 back when they were using the groove tubes in those mics and and a firewire m-box for an interface and a copy of Pro Tools. I built a nice little recording and mixing room in my parents garage (I had just turned 18.) I proceeded to learn all about mixing etc and recorded myself and so many other local artists. Mainly hip hop/r&b and some rock. All I used were that one mic, that m-box and Pro Tools and I did it all in that little room I built that had zero bass trapping and the walls were lined with bed foam since I wasn't aware of what PROPER room treatment was. I recorded male AND female vocals. Guess what? That mic worked on EVERY single voice I put in front it. Some needed a little more EQ than others, and perhaps that means it wasn't the "right" mic for them. But guess what? When it came time to mix, it DID NOT MATTER. Not one single client heard a finished mix and said "man, I really think we used the wrong mic on that." Over the years my mixing skills have undoubtedly increased and my gear has as well. But as I sit here thinking back while I'm sitting in my nice home studio all decked out, I look at this equipment and ask myself "which of these things do I REALLY need to keep?" Might be time to downsize and pocket some extra cash. This conversation has been quite enlightening. Thanks @good4sound

You're really quite wrong. Audiophiles, yes, absolutely. But unless it's some bullshit consumer technology, the difference between a professional mic at $150 and $3500 will offer a really big difference. Perhaps not in things you might consider to be useful if you don't know what you're talking about but it's not all about sound with something costing more. Ability to reject things off axis from the microphone, ability to reject interactions from adjacent walls and so on. Ability to gain it up really loud without its own electronic noise making a bucket load of hiss in the audio path for a few examples. Sound is hard. Go see a cheap concert.. The mics are feeding back and the sound is a mess and the lead guitar is unclear? Guess why that might be? Look at the above..

Your voice sits perfectly with both mics. Its very interesting how good they both sound. Im sure the 1040 is very versatile, but the price hurts... In your case and knowing that the 240 sounds good on the vocal/source I think I will go first to try it with a good tube mic pre before... For 1000-1500$ there are some nice options even with EQ that will also be useful for other things... Anyway, if the money is not a problem, or you don't want to have much analog gear around your studio... The 1040 is the perfect mic (in my opinion). Great video!

@@noobczsk8849 interesting point of view. I have to say that a good tube preamp could change and sculpt very nicely some mics. For example, I use mine with my AKG C414 II (which is a bright mic) and the warmth from the tube preamp change the mic character into a sound with more body. It makes it fatter, a bit more dark in a very positive way in my opinion. You can always drive the tubes more or less to get a more colored signal or more transparent… depending on taste. In my case when a want more body and a bit of more low end and presence: Tegeler VTRC - Channel strip (Tube preamp, Pultec EQ, Opto comp & VARITUBE Comp)… one of the most versatile and good sounding Preamp I have ever tried… when I want clean harmonics and a rock solid Fet sound: Tierra Audio Lava Preamp ( I have one video in my channel reviewing this one) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qOCTgKamrLrXZoE.html Best regards ;)

I would have loved a comparison between the LCT 440, 540 and 1040. Stupidly expensive, I know, but being able, to decide on the investment, actually needed would’ve been nice. It should be obvious after all, that an entry level 150 dollar mic doesn’t hold a candle to a 3500 dollar investment.

If you're going to spend this much money for a review, I think you should make a longer video, like over 10 minutes, or even 20 minutes of detailed review. Spending $3500 is way too much for a gear review in youtube. Well, I guess you have lots of money. But keep doing what your doing, I hope you will succeed more here in KZfaq so that all your hard work will be fully paid off.

I liked the cheaper mic better. Smoother and more natural sounding. The expensive 1040 sounded too sibilant and too much etch in the highs. I'm listening on nice headphones and system. I'd imagine a lot of peoples speakers and headphones don't have the detail so when something is overly higher sounding it makes it seem like it cuts through better and is better. Of course you recorded and leveled on your system so who knows how these mics actually sound in an expensive studio connected to very expensive gear. They are going to sound quite different than what you are getting out of them.

The cool thing about the LCT 1040 is you can set it to warm or dark and get a totally different sound that de-emphasizes high end and bring out more harmonics.

You should have plugged the LCT 240 in your interface directly instead of using the saturator that came with the other microphone. You're not demonstrating a raw sound from the natural microphone.
