(12 Oct 1975) Forty years ago, when the 'Coronation Scot' made a record run from London to Glasgow, steam railways were in their hey-day. Now as we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the beginning of steam locomotion, many of us mourn its passing. ® ® The York Railway Museum has recently been expanded to house many famous engines and other relics of the steam age. HRH Prince Philip travelled to York to open the enlarged Museum. ® ® An exact replica of Stephenson's 'Locomotion', which hauled the first railway train between Stockton and Darlington in 1825, led a Cavalcade of Engines at Shildon, County Durham. Famous locomotives followed in the procession including the 'Sir Nigel Gresley' and the last steam engine built in this country 'Evening Star'. ® ® A glimpse into the future of the railways and a World Record Holder is British Rail's High Speed Train. ® ® The most famous of all steam locomotives must surely be the 'Flying Scotsman', it became the epitome of all that a steam engine should be, noble, powerful and fast. A champion bearing the torch for an age that will never come again.
