EPISODE #73: Ted asks about how you can have certainty that you’re saved as a Christian. Rod talks about, from the Lutheran perspective, what do the Scriptures say about baptism and the sacraments, and how it can help to know the culture into which we’re born-our present culture is a ‘therapeutic’ one which puts great weight on our feelings, but for centuries prior, the generations instead looked to the written Scriptures and the promises of God with questions like these.

I just posted this on Facebook and it bears repeating here: As Dad and I have been working to bring real Christ-centered consolation to some who suffer significant doubt and terror regarding their salvation, if I see commenters heaping law on such people, I will be removing (and banning users who continue) commentary from our spaces when I see it. I’m not even going to waste time trying to correct such peoples’ error. This in accordance with Scripture: “And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.” - 1 Corinthians‬ ‭8:12‬

I have nothing in my heart or the works that come from that heart, that will commend me to God's perfection. Oh, but I am so blessed that the Son's righteousness is mine. Because the Son is mine. 1 John 5:11-12, is the key to the joy of 1 John 5:13. Thanks again, brothers.

It's not just that I don't have positive feelings, but that I'm hard-hearted, flippant, and a lot of other negative things. I can't get past the notion that I should have some change in my outlook and attitudes. I feel like a phony.

@nightflight83 I am completely with you in this struggle. As Dad just commented yesterday regarding a similar comment from someone else, "Welcome to being a believing human being!" You stand with the likes of Christian St. Paul, as he describes his struggles in his faith in Romans 7. And yet, this only puts the point to the unbelievably Good News that we receive in Scripture: "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 Even while our attitude sucks and we 'aren't feeling it today', or any other number of emotional messes, Christ died for us. He died for us while we were sinning against Him. Truly, the Gospel is 'too good to be true', but it is.

I know it's been a year, but I pray things have improved. If they haven't, I want to encourage you, as someone who also struggles. You are loved, and Jesus is for you. He died for you, and if you have truly believed that, and put all your trust in Him, then you are truly His.

It's a hard subject because there is great value in self examination and considering if you are in fact saved. Why? Because you might not be. Jesus said many will say "Lord, Lord" and he will reply, "Be gone you doers of iniquity, I never knew you". At the same time, we want to encourage the bretheren in that they can know they are saved, have assurance of their salvation. It's an understandable dilemma for the sinner-saint. We undulate between deliverance from sin through christ, and being wounded in battle against sin. There is at work in us both, sin nature and holy spirit, who are at war. We can rejoice in that Christ has final victory, and that sanctification is available to us now.

It's too easy to fall towards the extreme therapeutic way of life after generations of extreme stoicism were the norm and denial of feelings is still today seen as true masculinity.
