hi loves! ♡
so, the new semester has begun for me and it really has started to kick me in the ass :P but one of the things that destresses me is listening to a bunch of music. in this video, i decided to take those music and put them into a compilation of all the genres used / were inspired by in k-pop. this video was inspired by another video of this topic made by user hohoho hohohoho, who by the way, also makes hilarious without music edits for k-pop mvs so go check their video out! i'll link it in the "i" card or in the links sections later in the description~
k-pop is by no means a specific genre of music with a specific sound, style and aesthetic. instead, it's a term used by people outside south korea when describing the popular music scene in the country, which then later is replaced the country's original term "가요" (ga yo, which roughly means popular or pop) completely as a term used within their own country too around the 2000s. that being said, k-pop is a melting pot of so many styles and sounds that one definition certainly couldn't do it justice. the south korean popular music scene is diverse with many types of artists and genres, with ballads, r&b, soul and hip-hop dominating the domestic charts yearly, while idol music, albeit also has their domestic charting moments, sees their popularity flourish more outside of the country, especially among the youth of today. so it's not fair to judge the term "k-pop" as one specific signature sound, rather a mix of many. there's always something for everyone, and it's also fun listening to songs from other countries and languages, so don't be shy to dip your toes in the water as it is an interesting, vibrant music scene.

✧・゚: ✧・゚: disclaimers and notes*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
1) i am by no means a music expert, just someone who is generally nerdy about music XD this video is made based on my understanding of certain genres, what they sound and their defining characteristics. so there may be some people who would consider so-and-so song as so-and-so genre depending on how one perceives the genre. if i made any mistakes please do not hesitate to kindly let me know! we live and we learn after all and i wanted to hear your civil thoughts too!
2) these songs are NOT the only songs of each respective genres. these are just examples used, so please refrain from commenting "where's so-and-so group??" in a rude way. instead, you can help suggest more songs of whatever genre you know of in the comments for more to see! keep the comments section a kind environment where we can share some amazing music together~
3) i am also aware that some of these genres in terms of sound and name sometimes overlap. idk i just find the names from this website (www.musicgenreslist.com), research of my own, and making names up (like seriously is there a genre named "nu oriental" or "pirate orchestra music" please let me know haha), so i'm just going off whatever fits the genre the best, even if one song sounds like it belongs to another genre. again, do kindly let me know if i made any mistakes.
4) shiny is a made up genre made real XD idk if any true shiny songs exist but i figure lovelyz is the best fit hehe (even tho there is bass but seriously how does one make music without a bass line?)

yep to everything in this reply thread! a big bulk of the current popular music on the charts actually constitutes of mostly kdrama osts (which are mostly of the ballad genre), ballads, hiphop genres (like trap and chillhop) and r&b and forms of indie music (like indie rock, most famous example is hyukoh), as they are easy listening genres the public can enjoy. they don't necessary are "pop" genres as in dance pop, electropop or pop music in a way, but rather pop as in "popular music", which is made up of many many genres

ngl kinda expected to see more nct in this video bcz they are literally the most versatile korean band i’ve ever seen. they do music in so many different genres, for example; rnb (dreams come true) / 90’s alternative hip-hop type (yestoday) / rap (whiplash) / ballad (timeless) / hiphop (the 7th sense) / dance (we go up) / pop (touch) / electronic (around (not nct but taeyong)) etc. and pretty sure if they would’ve had the opportunity they would make a jazz song too, especially jaehyun.

I thought the same for Red Velvet but people would say it's biased when you put them as an example for those genres everytime (or when they show up in the vid for too many times) when they're not the only ones that do those, don't get me wrong I don't disagree with you, Nct is beyond amazing.

Impressive video, I really appreciate the effort! Even tho some of the genres don't even exist lol like "goth pop" or "dance rock" and some songs are signed to wrong genres - especially the "heavier" genres. I don't know much about kPop or kPop groupd, but I do know a quite a lot about alternative/underground music. And as someone comming from industrial music scene - what you picked for industrial and industrial hip-hop is sadly not even close. It's actually pretty impossible to find industrial music in kPop because it's very underground genre that just isn't suited for mainstream listeners. Other than that, good job, it must have had took a lot of time!
