We started the day with five chicks and at the time of writing we ended the day with five chicks so that's somewhat of a relief. The day was not without drama though. Unfortunately, a magpie has taken an interest in the nest box and was probably looking to snack on our chicks. As you'll see in the video (6:37) it gave them a hell of a fright. The hole is too small for a large bird such as a magpie and some of you may remember that it has a piece of metal protecting the hole so that bigger birds cannot peck their way in.
There's been a selection of insects brought in today and the parents seem to think that the chicks are ready for bigger food if their choices are anything to go by. Some of these are a bit on the too large side though.
More tomorrow...

I find it interesting how they manage the babie's poop. Its something thats easily forgotten, but if you think about it, evolution and instinct had to figure out baby waste management in animals that have nesrs or burroughs to raise their babies in. Its why cat and puppie babies need stimulation to poop. And here with birds, it seems, they poop in a specific way and their poop has a consistency that allows that parent to grab it and take it out of the nest. Disgusting? Maybe. Interesting? Definitely!
