2020 and still watching 16 bit gems

This is ten years old and still better than most of the professionals today. I still come back to watch this series out of nostalgia for nostalgia.

This game is a fantastic adventure had so much fun with this one.

This game has a lot of sentimental value for me, and was the first of the Gaia/Soul Blazer trilogy that I played. Very interesting choice for your first 16 bit gem, not that I'm complaining. It is definitely a game that I think deserves more attention than it gets... despite a flute being your main weapon. :P

This was the first game whose story really touched me as a kid, and despite the advances in storytelling today I still find it much better than most games. I'll never forget playing this as a young child when the tech was new and awesome. It was also the first game that made me call the nintendo hotline, damn that staircase I had to slide under in the secret level =P

I love(d) Roo and 16-Bit Gems; I hadn't thought about him in a while and they mentioned him on the CU Podcast the other day and now I'm gonna watch all of his videos again :)

I have such fond memories for this game. I remember that it was one of the first games I had played with a romance subplots that I really got swept up in. And the music. That song that plays when the group reunites after the shipwreck, and the background fades, stars falling all around them. Goosebumps and misty eyes, every time. Quintet knew how to tell a story.

I must say , your content is really enjoyable to watch , it's a shame that not that much people know about it because you really deserve it , keep up the good work !

Happy 10 year anniversary, Roo. I don't know if you'll see this but, I just want to say one thing: Please come back. Your show is one of the top five greatest things I've ever seen on this site. You've taught me so much and sparked my interest in the history of the medium I love the most.

This was one of the first games I ever played on the SNES.

I always thought Soul Blazer was better / funner. You need to come back to the 16 Bit Gems and do some episodes for Breath of Fire 1 & 2, Robotrek, Paladin's Quest, The 7th Saga, Brain Lord, Secret of Mana & the Phantasy Star 2-4 games. Maybe even Lufia 1 & how could you NOT have done some episodes on Final Fantasy II, III & Mystic Quest?

Can't wait to see Roo come into himself during these early 8-Bit Gems. He's pretty frikkin' sweet. Some of those jokes knock me on my ass.

Was not expecting his early episodes to be this funny at all. These are really underrated.

I always loved watching through an entire channel's history which i would normally enjoy so i could better appreciate what come's next. Unfortunately i don't have that luxury this time around. at least I now have a new game that i'll have to play.

Fun fact: Illusion of Gaia/Time sold 300 000 copies in North America, 200 000 in Japan and 150 000 in Europe.

Games I will get before I die: Little Samson, Earthbound, Illusion of Gaia.

I remember way back when my brother had got a copy of Pitfall the Mayan Adventure from the sales rack of a local Blockbuster. I didn't know that my parents had let him pick out a game so I asked if I could go there and get one myself. I ended up picking up Illusion of Gaia (for reasons I have no memory of) and went home to play it. I honestly did like the Action RPG aspects of the game, but something about the character sprites made the characters look... short and fat. Not based upon that did I not finish it as a young man (to be honest, the art style of FFIX turned me off more), but more upon getting stuck on the first boss of the last place when you, finally, get Shadow. Later in my years, using the big E because my cartridge was probably stolen by an old friend of mine (who stole about 60% of my game collection during the course of our friendship) I was able to complete the game and really enjoyed the hell out of it, especially giving those nostalgic squeems. It also pumped me up to wanting to play Terranigma. Great games.

I remember when i beat this game, i then went to study overboard.. and omg on my 5th day there, there was a cute girl, peculiar but pretty nonetheless... and there she was... Wearing an Illusion of Gaia TShirt... i was so perplexed i couldnt help my self ( even when being the shy boy that i was) and went to talk to her, she told me she had never met anyone who had played the game besides the two of us... after that, we started dating... it was beautiful, fuck yeah Illusion of Gaia

I dunno why, but my uncle(?) happens to have bought alot of RPG games for the SNES and so I got my first encounter with games like this, Mystic Quest and Lufia

this was one of my fav games growing up, and it was hard as hell XD happy to see that IoG is the first ep of this badass series

@jered91 You're not the only one, man. I just focus on what games I love most. Like if everything burnt to the ground, these are the treasures I'd keep from the game collection at least. Think of it that way. You may find one that you'll be replaying for a lifetime.

As far as I can tell you haven't reviewed Shadowrun yet (either one). I would really like to see that but what would be really interesting would be a comparison of the SNES & Genesis versions. I have been looking & I have not been able to find an informative comparison of the two (written or recorded). Just an idea!

not gonna lie. really glad u took out the sarcasm as this series goes on. it makes it seem like you don't actually like the games...or ur making fun of them...which makes me sad. love ur stuff tho...which is why im backtracking.

Did you use those radio things that make noises and that has giberish sound effect (used to eliminate other enviroment sound)? I have one of those, and makes the same noise that the one in 2:25 (that's kind of a loop error or glitch)

I don't think so, there was no release of this on any other console maybe you can look for the ROM and play it on PC with an SNES emulator :)

So, I heard on your GameTrailers comment section on part two of your Earthbound review that you had a Terranigma review. I went here in hopes that you may have a vague mention of Illusion of Gaia in there somewhere. What do I find? A full 2 part review of my favorite SNES game of all time. We are having gay babies whether you like it or not.

Why have you not done a review and history of the secret of mana /saken densetsu series the second two being on the super famicom /Nintendo also how about the romanceing saga series and the breath of fire series and the fire emblem series and the final fantasy series and the star ocean series and the tales of phantasia and the phantisy star series and the shinning force series and even the suikoden series though I think it started in the 32 bit era on PlayStation not the super nintendo 16 bit era . All I'm saying is your missing a lot of turn based rpgs and action/adventure rpgs and tactical /strategy rpgs for the 8 , 16 , 32 and 64 bit era's .
