Because of this vid I picked up the Pendel graphgear 1000 in 0.5mm. 1.5 years later I love it more than ever. The retractable tip has saved its life many times over. Someday I’ll buy all the sizes. I bought the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 based on this recommendation - boy am I glad! This is a fantastic mechanical pencil, and the fact that it only extends the graphite about 1 mm each click means that I almost never break a lead. I also like the completely retractable feature, which saves the point from damage. This was an excellent purchase - thank you!

I second a big lead holder. I have several for drawing that migrated to the garage as I learned how well they work for marking and how sturdy they are!

I got the LED tweezers a couple months ago & you are 100% correct, every woodworker needs one.

Great ideas. I already have and use most of the items you listed and fully agree with the need for them. But I can always learn and you showed me three items that I will be ordering this afternoon. The angle gauge was already on my list. I haven't done a lot of shop work for over 25 years but was a carpenter as well as owning a small cabinet shop prior to spending 20+ years as a building inspector, fire inspector, fire investigator and Fire Marshal. I am retired now and mostly hunt, fish and whitewater raft, but have been drawn back to working in the shop. just finishing tricking out the shop now. The electronic angle gauges had not been invented last time I did shop work. The trammel points look great and will also be ordered soon. The moisture capsules are something I had not even heard of. I lived in a very dry climate most of my life so humidity and rust were not even a concern. Now it is a big concern. I searched for solutions what I thought was quite extensively but they never showed up. The infrared thermometers are great tools with many uses most people dont think of. But if you want to just have fun with one of them try this. If you live in a climate where it is cold in the winter and on warm days it often cools down real fast just after sunset, take the thermometer out and check the temperature of different items including the ground. You will likely be surprised at the results.

Been using a Graphgear 1000 for years as a cabinet installer. Absolutely invaluable and I now own over 10, keep one everywhere.

Love these! My wife now has my Christmas list. BTW, I'm a Maglite Holster guy. Have been since back in '90 when I first started working for EMS. I've been out of EMS for 21 years, but never gave up the Maglite. I use it pretty much every day for something. I work as a lawn sprinkler tech now, and it's so handy to shine down into 2" PVC guide pipe to get a shut off key on a valve handle 4 ft deep, or in poorly lit basements and garages.

I enjoy your "Cool Tool" videos because they usually include tools that I can afford, not $3000 track saws etc. Thank you.

Ive had a small shop that i was happy with but you just can't help lusting over a bigger place. Come on! It's huge! Visions of grand expansions like a cnc and furniture that only you can make fill your head like sugar plum fairies and saw dusty measurements from projects gone by. We love the space to do what we love. Do what you do sir. It's inspiring regardless how big our tool supply and space allows. Just don't forget the lil guy that hasn't yet reached your level. I got the trend cleaner while back when I saw a video of yours and found my table saw blade to be nasty. It worked really well for me with circular saw blades and countersink drill bits. Came back for more cool tools and I just want to point out that I find Q TIPS to be very effective at getting rid of those caked on dirt. Love the series!

Whenever i see a good quality measuring tape of that size or smaller at any thrift store or garage sale, i buy them all. ALWAYS. If I finally have one in every pcoket and drawer in my house, i start giving them away. old mini measuring tapes in good condition usually last a hell of a long time and theyre handy to have at hand. ive gotten at least 6 or so at 25 cents a piece and even managed to get a few unique ones from old companies that gave them as loyalty gifts to employees.

I bought the Pentel pencil and I absolutely love it! The retracting tip is excellent. Now I’m making nice, sharp, precise lines and I haven’t suffered from lead breaking at all.

A tip for getting extra small splinters out: use a needle to slightly puncture the skin just below the splinter and pull it up. I'm not sure if anyone else does this, but it helped me out a lot over the years. For me, more often than not, a splinter will break off under the skin or will get pushed so far that there is no exposed end above the skin.

I don't do a lot of wood work but the info. in your vids. are great to transfer to other types of work. Everything from certain tools to methods you use. Looking forward to more, thank you for doing these.

Wonderful Episode I made notes and the company that has the angle finder. Wow, they some nice stuff at reasonable prices. The Caliper set is bluetooth and will directly into any document you open. No typing no errors. Thanks I will be keeping an open document for your suggestion. The right tool always helps.

The LED headlamps are the bomb!!! They free up your hands vs holding a flashlight, and when you start getting old like me, you need the extra light for a lot of close-up work. The self-centering punch is great, too! I thought of another use for it, where a vix bit wouldn’t be the best choice. When you’re marking holes for a draw board (breadboard) on a tabletop, you don’t want to drill right at that center point, so I wouldn’t use a vix bit there. I use the center punch, then I use a bradpoint bit to drill the hole about 1/32” toward the tabletop so it draws the breadboard nice and tight.

Love those little straight edge markers/cutters getting the set now.

3 cheap things I keep in my workshop are rolls of wax paper, aluminum foil (get the wide roll) and plastic wrap. I get them cheap at Dollar General. The wax paper and foil are great for lining the workbench when I’m gluing or staining. The plastic wrap works like a cheap strap clamp. Just wrap it tight around parts you’re gluing.

That tramel set is just what I need to cut thin cardboard gaskets for my Dustopper. The gaskets provid a better seal between the bucket rim and the inside channel of the Dustopper. Thank you for the tool review. Chuck

That tape is a perfect fit for my jeans watch pocket. It’s so handy to always have available in life away from the shop. I probably use mine about 3-4 times a week.

I have a Stanley 16' fatmax in the bag on my wheelchair, I use it all the time, it is essential. if you want to upgrade that flashlight, Olight has a AAA (i3t) and a AA (i5t) light that you can clip to a shirt pocket comfortably, I EDC the AA one and wouldn't want to be without it. I use rechargeable batteries, so it is always good to go.

Hey Stump, great video as usual. 1: Those are awesome pencils! The 0.5 & 0.9 lead sound great, & that monster lead...wow! 2: Yes, once you start using tapes, I find that I use them all the time. 3: Flashlights & headlamps. When I was in the Army, I ALWAYS carried a flashlight along with my Leatherman on my belt. Invaluable! I get all sorts of them almost for free. Now, they are ALL OVER the house, shop, garage, shed, & truck. 4: You used to get the drill bit gauges with magazine subscriptions. That's how my dad & I got all of ours. I'm going to try and get that nut & bolt gauge. Again, another great video

I watched this today (3May2020) and immediately dived into Amazon for the M Power Tri-Scribe here in the UK. They are on sale here from various sellers priced from £52 to £75 and that most expensive one is also £4 for shipping!!!! I liked the look of it but not that much and I have just bought some nice measuring tools and gauges from Axminster Precision: they have a catalogue that's like Aladdin's cave. Nice video with sensible tips, thank you.

I have several of those same Pentel mechanical pencils and I love them. The 0.5 mm size is perfect for scribing using Incra rules and protractors. I got the first one a long while ago after you mentioned them in one of your other videos. I like them for all the reasons that you said. I have carried a Fenix LD-09 LED flashlight in my front pants pocket every day. That and a folding knife are my EDC. I like your tip about the art pencil with the large lead in it for marking rough lumber. I'll have to get one of those. It seems like I'm always sharpening a carpenter's pencil more than I'm using it. A tip for sharpening chisels, plane irons, etc. is I like to use a cheap USB microscope to view the edge. That makes it trivial to see if I'm ready to change grits yet or not, or if I'm free-handing it I can see how the bevel is coming out (or not). Even a head magnifier (like an Opti-View) helps out, although that magnification is far less than the microscope. My middle-aged eyes can use all the help that they can get.

I like using mechanical pencils in my shop, I’ve been using them for engineering work for a long time. I’ve gone from .5mm to .7mm and now to .9mm There are a wide variety of the Pentel models available- all plastic body, metal/plastic body, and all metal body. You can buy cheap mechanical pencils at office supply stores that are already full of lead. Or you can go beyond Pentel and buy the expensive models such as Rotring.

Because of your Cool Tools video I bought the Pentel pencil and love it, especially the automatic retractable tip.

Love having short measuing tapes at each work area - Though having them with a magnet makes it nice to slap on the joiner , drill press etc.

I wish I'd seen this before Christmas, when my wife was searching for stocking stuffers. I'd like one of each!

I love keychain tape measures. They used to have the Stanley in a keychain version at home Depot for a dollar. Now I can only find plastic ones that are a little bulkier.

Regarding the laser thermometer, since Covid many people purchased a kind of this tool for taking peoples temperatures. Most also have a “world“ mode for a larger range of temperatures. For me, I started using it for safety to test things like glue guns, heat guns, soldering irons, etc. to make sure they are cool enough to put away. Maybe most experienced wood workers “just know” how long that takes from experience but for me it’s been a huge comfort knowing it’s cool enough without burning my fingers in the process.

The thick lead-holder I have has a surprise - a little sharpener in the metal cap. Mine came with white, black, red leads.

I've been accumulating mini flashlights (freebies from my optimetrist's office!) and now I have one in every jacket pocket, and of course, on my keychain.

I found my Angle Cube a very worthwhile accessory for my cabinet saw. Rather than hunt around for the cube whenever I need it, I made a device to hang the cube on the side of the saw. The device was made out of scraps of plywood plywood and spaced-apart strips of wood. I made it like an open topped cage so it would not trap saw dust inside. The cage attaches to the side of the saw with a couple magnets. A few wipes of polyurethane gel and it avoids fingerprints.

I like you vids, nice & clear. My choices for properly cheap workshop tools: 1. PENCILS + sharpener, carpenters' pencils (versatile, won't roll off the table); or CHALK for crude measures; 2. Tape measures - I buy the cheapest (check for accuracy) from Poundland (our dollar store) and 6 at a time, cos I'm always leaving them behind on jobs; 3. Digital angle measurer: I have a spirit level with adjustable guage, many uses; 4. Torches (flashlights): the cheap ones are unreliable, spend a little bit more & get one with an adjustable zoom, v useful; 5. Damp/rust problems - buy cheap silica gel sachets in bulk; 6. cheap headtorches - ugh, batts don't last, get a mini head torch with lithium batt, v small, lasts a long time, or, for working at night / hiking, get a proper headtorch with 4 AA batts; 7. Barrier cream - essential, buy in bulk tubs from budget trade outlet; use petroleum grease on hands before painting, paint washes off easily; 8. self-centering punch, v. useful; 9. removing resin from cutting tools, use thinners (bulk buy) or Methylated spirit; 10: plastic gauges, various - I use Vernier calipers all the time, one tool, many uses, takes little space; 11. trammel arms - make your own, easy peasy; 12. mitre gauge/marking out tool - Wolfcraft Mitre Angle/gauge, cheap as chips, multi-use. My fave tool list varies according to the task in hand. Thanks again.
