16 minutes of downwind sailing w J/111 BLUR

Some sequences from Tjörn Runt 2018. We didn't have our regular crew, but still managed to put the pedal down outside Härön. Full main, J3.5 and A5. 500 m average = 16.46 kn. Top speed 19.50 kn.

What they're doing is easing on the puffs and then tightening to get the boat to surf up on the waves. Notice the boat to the left which almost broaches. Helm is playing real close to a major jibe but the wind is not switching enough to cause that kind of surprise so he can get away with it.

Very nice Peter! You and your crew know the boat very well. The j111 broaching, was their chute too big? Or not have as good a crew or Capt?

They had a different sail that made them sail higher. We did a few broaches as well - just not in this video :-)

Hey Peter, I’m thinking of buying a j111. But I’m not sure if its strong enough for what i need. Would you feel comfortable sailing a j 111 across the Pacific Ocean for instance?

Depends on how/where? We plan to do Transpac with BLUR and are not worried about the boat.

@@PeterGustafsson I’m thinking further South then Hawaii. Sailing around Australia. Tasmania sea, southern ocean, Indian Ocean. Good chance of seeing 40+ knot winds regularly. They have some pretty hard blue water endurance races in that area. I’m looking for a racey boat that’s different to the usual fair.

@@tinnturps It is a sporty boat, so it will be tough to sail over long distances / heavy weather. The boat will probably take it, but it will be tough for the crew. Like driving a sports car across a continent. We took the boat 800 nm over the North Sea in 40+ knots and decided never to do it again kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ip6BZMxpsauzhY0.html Another thing is the lack of storage space + the boat will suffer if loaded to heavily. For that type of adventure, I'd rather spend my money on a more robust 40-footer or a catamaran.

TWA is typically 150 for optimum plane. Sometimes here we're a bit low, and I'm constantly talking about "coming up" 😃 TWS 20-26 knots,

Cool. Where do you race? You mean the "offshore sprayhood"? More details here + scroll down into the comments. www.blur.se/2015/07/24/j111-blur%C2%B3-offshore-mode/ I made it myself by gluing two sleeping mats together to form the shape, then dressed it in sprayhood canvas.

@@cantax_1425 Found it :-) CODIAM is hard to beat as usual. Really love Trinité-sur-Mer and hope to come back to do Spi Ouest again.
