16 Muscle Building Mistakes I REGRET Making!

I have made quite a few muscle building mistakes over the years that I regret, and today I'm sharing them with you. I'm going to discuss my 16 greatest regrets I made both in the gym and in the kitchen, when it came to my pursuit of building muscle and getting ripped.

I started my journey of no longer wanting to be a skinny kid when I was about 13 years old. I trained alongside my older brother and tried to copy the exercises and workouts that he was doing. Along the way, I missed some important lessons and wound up paying the price.
Today, I'm going to share with you some of those that I really wish I could go back and change. If I could have had this video available to me as a young teenager and into my twenties, I feel like I'd have a much different physique these days and one that was less rife with physical issues that came from poor training and education.
As a physical therapist, it starts with being able to take my knowledge now and forgive myself for simply not knowing what I do today. For instance, when I first started working out, I would open up the muscle building magazines and try to follow the 30-40 set routines and workouts of bodybuilders like Shawn Ray.
Along the way, I would experience pain and joint discomfort from performing the exercises incorrectly and doing them with incredible amounts of what would be junk volume. Not being enhanced like the models were, led me to experience much different results than what I expected from looking at their pictures alone and not knowing the whole story.
I also was quite naive when it came to nutrition and supplementation. I thought, for instance, that all oats were created equal. This couldn't be any further from the truth. My early days of eating Quaker Maple Brown Sugar oatmeal in the packets led to lots of consumption of sugar with little benefit. The regular slow cook oats had zero grams of sugar. Only with education was I able to identify that and make the change that would lead to lower levels of body fat and a more ripped physique.
I also had many mistakes when it came to performing exercises I probably should not have. Years of damage were done in a short period of time by performing strength based exercises without properly addressing my flat feet. The poor biomechanics and form on the exercises led to a quick breakdown of my knees which still plague me to this day.
I often overlooked the benefits of progressive overload in my training. This was particularly true of my bodyweight and calisthenic exercises. Instead of opting for more overload in the form of a harder variation of the common exercise, I would just try to build more muscle by adding on more and more reps. This was a mistake I'd come to learn later in life but has paid big dividends since fixing.
Nutrition has always been a struggle for me. I went from not caring enough to caring way too much and becoming almost obsessive about what I put in my mouth. In previous videos I discussed how I became fat phobic and avoided almost all dietary fats. Here I talk about the inflexibility I had when working in professional baseball and found myself on the road with very few options for healthy nutrition at my disposal - at least not cheaply.
I also discuss my oversight when it came to the value of eccentrics, particularly on pulling exercises. It's not hard to remember to slow down the rep on the way down in a pushing exercise like the bench press. This is often an automatic built-in body protection mechanism that keeps you safe under heavy loads. In pulling exercises however, the weight tends to fall away from you. It's easy to forget about lowering it slowly and because of that, you forego one of the greatest stimuli for muscle growth and gains.
Speaking of lost gains, it's easy to do when you are training in pain. I made the mistake of trying to workout with pain rather than around it. There is a big distinction between the two. If you want to keep building muscle fast then you have to respect when things aren't right in your body and find a way to keep training without continuing to aggravate the inflammation in your joints or injury to your muscles.
My personal battle with a shoulder injury took longer than I would have liked because I originally tried to keep performing the very exercises that were leading to pain and discomfort when performing them.

He said in an interview that his videos drive traffic to his website. I myself have bought two of his programs. I really like the Core4 abs program, had a ball running that. I'll probably run it again in the future. People can say what they want, I don't like training at the fast tempo that he likes, but man, I've learned a lot from him.

Very inspiring. At 56, here one of my biggest lessons: never train for ego or to impress others. Nobody gives a s*** about your number of plates or personal best. Focus in your inner progress. Train from a place where everything you do at the gym must support your needs. Just my two cents. God bless you all!

Completely agree with this - do your own thing. Often while others wildly swing around much heavier weights, I stick to lower ones but move them more slowly (or myself more slowly if it's a body weight exercise). It still surprises me the number of people who train with weights in a gym that miss the point of ** resistance ** training.

54 years old here, lifting since I was 13-and this is right on. After 3 surgeries in last 4 years from workout injuries, I have finally learned my lesson. That extra plate? No one cares. Change another variable (speed, volume, etc) and stop obsessing about the weight. Don’t learn the hard way like I did.

My biggest regrets: 1) Not developing an overall level of athleticism before I even hit the gym. I should have worked on my push-up abilities before starting bench presses. I should have worked on my bodyweight squats before getting under a bar. And most importantly *I should have done A LOT more cardio to get my cardio conditioning up before getting serious about lifting weights* I was getting tired very quickly during my routines. 2) Not dialing in my nutrition properly. I was skinnyfat when I started, and I didn't realize how much fat I was carrying and how little muscle I was carrying. I bulked up by eating junk food to round out my calories because that's what a lot of fitness youtubers were pushing. The fact is when you're starting out you need to eat clean, regardless. No Pop-Tarts!

100% agree. I found that resistance training complements endurance training and visa versa. My main hobby is trail running, but my form and balance are built in the gym. Plus, the added vascularization via weight training is enhanced by endurance training.

My biggest regret is not taking my fitness seriously until I was 38. I'm 40 now and have lost 105 pounds but have hit a major plateau. I'm not giving up but really wish I started taking fitness seriously a lot sooner. But, @Jeff, your videos are soon helpful and I love your 100 series!

I feel that. Letting myself get out of shape over the last ten years, and trying to fight my way back into better shape now, the difference in effort required is ridiculous. I wish I had the foresight to just keep at it over all of this time, instead of letting my body go, then spending the next few years struggling to claw my way back.

If you hit a plateau I'd suggest taking more rest and recovery. This applies to your mind and body. Forget the plans. Just explore and have fun with training.

Congrats on your 105lbs!!! That’s incredible!! I have no idea what your diet/nutritional plan is but I’ll throw out there a suggestion: Shirataki/ Konjac rice or pasta- aka ‘Miracle Rice/Pasta’. It is basically carbLESS (1-3g total carb per serving). You may even make a bowl with Kettle & Fire Bone Broth to get yummy, satiating nutritional goodness along with all of your EAAs, but without all the calories… Anyways keep up the great work !! ✌🏼 ❤️ 💪🏼

#15 hit home for me. I injured my arm in June and totally worked THROUGH it until September when I started seeing a physical therapist who immediately instructed me to work AROUND it, like you mentioned. Great advice all around! Thanks Jeff!

Hey Jeff, I've been a building contractor for 30 odd years and have acquired various injuries along the way. I've often stopped working out because of the injuries, some requiring surgery but once the rehab is done I try to get back into the gym. I've recently turned 54 and my motivation was near zero...but you're videos have recently inspired me to get of my arse and get back to some training. I started with a 30min walk everyday and have now restarted weight training. I especially liked you're view about working with injuries....very inspirational. You made some great points, Jeff. I remember you mentioning in an older video about unshrugging your shoulders in a bench press or pushup. It didn't occur to me till now that the same is important in other chest exercises. Also, you just gave me a valuable piece of advice when you said to work around injuries instead of through them. In my history of gym injuries, I would stop training for months before I would attempt to start training again. However, after watching your channel for a little while longer, I found that you provide a ton of knowledge in how to do that. All of this and more are reasons why you've helped me in my fitness journey, and I'm sure I could say the same for many others. Thanks for another helpful video.

That would be amazing. I noticed yesterday that my shoulder on my left side tends to slouch forward. That shoulder is also very tight and susceptible to pain. I know it's out of alignment when I lift because I can see it. I think my body is trying to protect it from injury, but I think the misalignment is causing other problems in my neck.

With growing older, I have had to make adjustments. Seeing your video helps a lot. I am 63 years old, and now am trying band workouts that have actually lowered my shoulders pain quit considerably. Thanks for all your videos...they really do help and give me some training ideas!

I am still doing bands. I do higher reps as I am not trying to bulk out, and have lost some more weight around my stomach. More shoulders are a dually becoming more defined.

I’d add only two Things I would add to this list is the importance of stretching after a workout or even after correctional exercises or even just taking a day where you just stretch and do just correctional exercises. Your body and it’s flexibility will thank you years later down the rode. Your muscles, tendons. The importance of getting enough sleep. Your body needs sleep wether you like it or not. Im happy you did this. Everything else I appreciate that you covered Jeff. I take pride in getting to where I am. The only major mistakes i made is I thought I had to cut out most sugar, fats, and bad carbs and have huge amounts of protein to get “shredded” or lean with muscle. I also didn’t always sleep the best and I never ever stretched after a workout or took a day to work on my flexibility (and as someone who became a calisthenic athlete that was very important regardless if I was one or not) great video and I hope my comment from my shared experience helps someone out there as well!

Phenomenal video Jeff. Great advice all round. I especially emphasise the point of training around injuries. I've had a nerve pain in my arm whilst deadlifting for a while now. I decide to replace the barbell with dumbells and have had no trouble with it since.

Trained on & off all my life, 47 in June, now 8 weeks back in to a new lifestyle schedule including improved diet, improved sleep pattern, a 1 mile uphill march warmup, 1hr-1hr 20min weights & resisitance and a 1/4 mile swim every day Mon-Fri before work. Like everyone I have my prefferred exersize's and bad habits that creep in over time, old injuries that I have to work around; but spending time watching Athlean-X, learning and re-learning from Jeff always proves invaluable. Because of the no nonsense approach you have in the way you show people anyone can get fit. Some of the fitness gurus dont take into account the human anatomy like you do. I could go on and on. I’ve had some shoulder pain In the rear part of my shoulder for about two weeks. After doing some research it seemed like a weird one since most people get pain on the top or front. The other weird thing was that the only thing that would cause me pain is external rotation. I started doing resistance exercises that you suggested and am convinced it was due to impingement because after two days of doing it my shoulder is already MUCH better. These are now a daily exercise for me to keep my mobility up. Thanks for all the tips!

Could also have something to do with the rotator cuff. I had a similar injury a few years ago and it sounds a lot like what you described. Warming up with some band work for your shoulders and doing underhanded pull aparts may help.

Great stuff as usual. Keep these vids coming. Im a hybrid in that I use three or four different instructors to help me match my own body’s type of learning. But yours is one of the top two depending on where I am.

Rest, rest, rest! Going to bed at 10pm instead of 1am - even if I got 8 hours sleep. There’s a big difference between 8 hours of sleep that starts from 10pm then if it starts from 1am. A rest day A Deload week Heck Even a week off from the gym has helped me ENORMOUSLY.

@@coachtim6188 personally, I think the problem would be if you’re forcing yourself into exhaustion, or an unhealthy state to stay up till 1 AM. If you stay up until 1 AM like clockwork, and you feel amazing with no issues, probably not a problem.

5:56 I'd love to see a detailed video on muscle cramps and what triggers them. My biceps cramp up quite often either when doing curls or chin-ups.

@@zachlewis2751 beware that you don’t have anterior compartment syndrome. I have extremely developed calves , ignored the pain/cramping and now have had multiple surgeries and have significant neuropathy . My calves are down to about 16.5 inches but , aside from the giant scars , still look very well developed . Obviously can’t train them anymore but you should get that looked at before it gets too outta hand.

My feet started having problems with arch dropping and I didn’t know why but I decided at that time to always take care of my feet by buying support shoes and treating my feet like a King.. it paid off about 2 later and I still do my best to get and keep my feet in great shape.. now I’m happy and my feet are not hurting me anymore

Best vlog ever. I'm much older then you and now am looking at a shoulder replacement. My lifting addiction will be seriouly challenged. Made pretty much the same mistakes you did but learned too late. Hope you can do one, or a series, on corrective & compensation exercises.

Great video. I can definitely relate to #3. In the '70s just following the "manual" on old Diversified Products eqipment was not good. In the 80's, "no pain, no gain" could be an error. Those things resulted in some back problems that stuck with me until I started Jeff's "pretzel stretch."

Jeff, I absolutely relate to the flat feet saga, and learning to listen to my body rather than do more leg extensions. I've found one of the best leg exercises for my flat feet and achy knees is to drag a weighted rubber 50 gallon trash can backwards for about 20 yards. Most leg exercises aggravate my knees, but that really fires up every muscle in my legs without hurting my knees. Discovered it at work, pulling a loaded can to the compacter.

Thanks again although I know a lot of this I still benefit by hearing it again. Your videos really are the best thing on KZfaq for many reasons. Not just from a weight lifter perspective (I am not a weight lifter but a cyclist) But your videos are applicable to so many things in training for any sport or just fitness. I can also tell you that your physical therapy videos have helped me so many times both for slipped lower back disc's & also rotator cuff/shoulder type pain/ injuries. The way you show what is going on with your example skeleton etc is all great! Thanks again! I plan to look at some of your home programs as part of my 2023!

you always show me exactly what i need to see and hear. thank-you. has happened many times. i have much respect for Jeff and how he pivoted to providing home workouts when the gyms were closed early pandemic. what a gift to the human race. if only they have ears to hear and eyes to see. almost 75, been serious about holding off sarcopenia for only the last 10 years - the result: muscles only i can see. been religious about aerobics on the Nordic Track Skier for 40 years. no sugar and only whole foods and well water for the last 4 years has been the corner stone on my best physical foundation ever. lo carb, healthy fat for the win. what i have learned about the body from studying biochem since Feb 2019, is the muscles are the flush pump for the body waste products. there is no lymph system "heart", instead we are designed to move and the musculature does this pumping action. i have learned much from Jeff and Jessie. Much respect to you both.

This is a great video with plenty of lessons that I would utilise in my own training and work with clients. A mistake I used to make is start my workout with a a bunch of isolated exercises, core exercises before I get to the actual workout I would be exhausted. Whereas now I focus on 4-5 compound exercises first and then finish with 1-2 accessory exercises. Thank you Jeff it is always a pleasure to learn from the best.
