In this video we discuss using toys to speed up your dog's obedience. There is a big difference between using toys and food treat rewards in training obedience.
In this video I discuss the proper use of harnessing your dogs drive for the toy to get them to do the right thing and speed up obedience. We also address how to deal with mistakes.

My 2 1/2 month old Malinois are the most intelligent dogs ever. they sit, lay down and much more. I have taught them to wait for the treat that belongs to them solely. This has been a challenge coming from a litter of 15! Thank you very much for your training videos. You have and will continue to have an influence on these super affectionate and dedicated to us canines. Socializing after 3rd series shots will be important. We crate train them and they do so well.

Love your channel rob! And your dog is a beauty! If he was to pounce at the toy before the command how do you correct? I have a 18 week dobie who I’m working the best of my ability he gets super hyper for his tug, quite hyper for a ball but only takes food rewards sometimes if he’s really in the mood so I’m focusing on using tug to train him but really struggling with him working on heel and not pouncing at my hands when teaching him down, any tips?

I have a male APBT that is a 'game type' . You can look up what that means... This dog really likes retrieving and catching a ball/rubber toy or Frisbee (I get Hero 215... the best). The dog will do obedience commands readily knowing that the game will resume. So the reward for obedience is to get to play a favorite game. A 'drivey' dog is a good one for this sort of game and it may take some coaxing for an insecure dog to learn it. Because a dog is a tough fighter does not mean he is secure about other things. Games help him develop confidence (trust in you and in his ability to have fun). A fave is a NERF 'jai alai' thrower and a tennis ball sized ball can be used all year round (tennis court in chilly weather is clean and ideal!). I like a ''Chuk-It' brand rubber one with 2 holes that whistles when thrown and is tough yet flexible and smooth).

What an obedient dog, I am trying to train my two Doberman puppies. They are almost 6 months old and seems to be responding well. Do you have advice with Dobermans?

Um I think what she’s asking is what she can do to help train her doberman while using breed traits to her advantage... I have a doberman and they typically have a very high prey drive. Use a flirt pole which mimicks small prey which will be extra interesting to high prey drive dogs such as dobermans, WHILE teaching him impulse control.

Hi Robert, I am thinking about getting a german shepherd puppy. As a woman, is it better to get a male or a female to be able to train it young?

1:35 This is VERY good advice if you want to get your dog to obey commands with precision and speed. 95% of all dog trainers/owners would have rewarded Goofy on his second try.

What makes Robert's advises so good is that he strives for top tier training methods, yet they are simple and not rocket science. Everything he says all makes sense when you think about it, and the results prove it! And on top of that, THEY DON'T TAKE TIME. There are soooo many issues about positive-only dog training methods and those who preach it like the gospel, but sticking to the topic, their two big flaws are that 1. Positive-only people just looooooove to ramble on and on about how studies have proven that yadda yadda, and make a big deal about technical terms. They focus way too much on the science of dog training (= lecturing) rather than providing actual real-life results. Though people may have varying opinions about him, one thing is for certain that the world needs to thank Cesar Millan for proving that ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. Just like how the devastating 2007 melamine contamination incident was when people began to really question processed pet food and begin serious research on actual canine nutrition, Cesar Millan is the one person who saved the entire dog training world from being completely taken over by positive-only methods. 2. Positive-only dog training works like magic on puppies and dogs without issues, but IT TAKES TIME to fix problematic behaviour, especially intense prey/killing drive. "The dog isn't ready for it yet because the stimulus is too much for him/her". It's all about having the dog getting used to things. Getting used to things you don't like takes time. Positive-only people don't understand that an animal's instincts are very strong, and that they can override the desire for a treat or a praise. They NEGOTIATE with dogs instead of teaching them. Everybody knows that when a criminal that has a place occupied with hostages inside, you first negotiate with them, but it takes hours upon hours to get any results. The fact that it has been over 20 years since positive-only dog training became a widespread thing, yet "professional" dog trainers even today are failing to fix dogs with severe aggression and label them "un-trainable" - which is absolute bullshit, as Cesar Millan has proven many many times - and put them to sleep proves that positive-only dog training isn't the only way, and can even HARM dogs (oh, the irony). Robert's techniques gives quick results without the need for memorising complicated scientific mumbo-jumbo. AND THE DOGS LOVE IT. A win-win for everybody! It boggles my mind how positive-only freaks see the results right in front of them, yet refuse to change their minds. smh

Mr Cabral. I have a one year 5 month old pup. He is a pure breed German Shepherd. I have a question..... When I give him a command sometimes he pauses for 5 - 8 seconds and then does what he is told. He has an unusual high bone on the crown of his head. And I am wondering why he takes time to respond. He is very loving and extremely affectionate. This is for Mr Cabral... Anyone else who isn't a professional trainer refrain from commenting. Thanks.

It could be something your doing wrong (like not being firm with him and letting him know that the faster he does something the faster he gets the toy or treat) or it could be a medical reason so if I was you I would take him to the vet just in case. (Yes I know you said you only want him to respond but he most likely won't so I figured I would answer so that you aren't waiting for months and months for an answer)

I have exactly the same breed and type of dog, nearly 6 months, with exactly the same trait - it takes 5-8 seconds to do what he is told. For Shepherds that is normal for that age, because the puppy is learning not only "the command", but 1/ building trust in you, and 2/ the puppy tries to differentiate the tone of your voice and make sure what is exactly that you want. It happens a lot with Shepherds within a family, where members of the household do not follow exactly the same routine, nor communicate with the dog with the same tone of the voice and body language. In time he will get much quicker. By now, I hope you found that out! :-)
