2:32 That's not what I would consider voice leading is at least in the traditional sense and what's found in music theory books. Voice leading is usually referred that in harmony the "voices" travel as smoothly as possible (sometimes not at all) to the next note of the proceeding chord. For example, at 2:00 one could consider the chord is not being "voice led" optimally, since the voices of the chord (singular notes) are jumping quite a lot. Alternatively, at 2:08 the voice leading is quite smooth compared to the first example. We "achually" could argue that in the 2:32 example, the top voice is indeed traveling quite smoothly, but in the example, it functions more as a melody - I feel. I understand these are in a edm context, so maybe edm producers use terminology a bit different from what I am used to but for me personally, it was a bit confusing :) Sorry for the rant and the nerd moment, I think you have one of the most useful production-related KZfaq channels!

You're right, that confused me too, that was more of a melody/rhythmic movement than voice leading.
@Royvcent
@Royvcent Жыл бұрын
Haha I got a little confused here as well so immediately started looking for the comment that would point this out. Also, regarding the inversion part 1:49. If you inverse the bottom note of the chords, you' re actually also changing the chord. If you want to play the same chord it's best to copy the bottom note to an octave below.

Voice leading in classical music is writing chords where the highest pitch notes lead into eachother, creating a melody on top over the chord progression. Think C Minor to Ab Major where the G of C Minor leads to the Ab, the root, of the next chord.

Maybe trying to "live up" to what you expect, in some cases based on the music genre your aiming for, realise most times , a personal approach is best..... Actually don't use plugs ins or library's to create the base of your track... Sing , play bass... etc... Also , thats then the test... can you fit it into a genre, or is not just you? Making music should never be boring.. Because its always about "the Feels"

Damn those tracks were hot. Thanks for all the tips. To give back, one transition trick I've recently found, I call it "the power of the one". Most of the time loops are a bit unstable and deliberately avoid hitting the one chord at the end to keep the momentum up. So I do specifically that - I hit a big fat one chord and the root notes on all instruments and hold it till it's obvious the loop stopped, then add a small drum flourish to keep the momentum going and then go into a new section. It's a bit like the silence transition, but with a different flavour.

Be sure to look up voice leading, because that wasn't it. I'd describe that technique as "vamping" or a "chord riff". It's basically the piano equivalent of what rhythm guitarists do when they tap and mute one or two strings in a rhythm instead of just playing a sustained chord.
