Description: Me and a couple friends drove up to Rhode Island to see the New Avelia Liberty Trainset do test runs between Westerly and Cranston. I went to Wickford Junction while they went to Kingston. In total I saw 4 test runs, I missed the first southbound run, came by a few minutes after I arrived and I missed the third southbound after leaving to get lunch. Nonetheless, I captured it at a top speed of 160MPH on its last run of the day heading back to Boston. Also featured are a couple MBTA Trains, the OG Acelas, and 642 blowing for the MOW Truck.

@@daniellewis1789 More than half of the NEC trackage is already at 125+ mph. And Amtrak is in the process of upgrading those sections to 160 mph, as well as removing other slow sections and bridges. There are only two 150 mph sections on the Acela route currently, but this is changing as we speak. Amtrak got a ton of money to upgrade the NEC to full HSR, and they're intent on using it.

I don't understand why they are replacing the Acela Express. They should keep both the new and old trains running. Germany still has ICE 1 trainsets constructed in 1989 running. They were refurbished in 2005-2008. Amtrak could to the same.
@FFred-us9tw
@FFred-us9tw 2 жыл бұрын
The current Acela's lack the capacity and are in rough shape from 20+ of New England weather along the ocean. They could be extensively rebuilt but it doesn't solve the capacity issue. And it does not make any financial sense or logistical sense to maintain and operate two completely different types of train sets on one dedicated corridor. It's hard enough maintaining a parts inventory for one type of train.
@alexnefi
@alexnefi 2 жыл бұрын
@@FFred-us9tw The capacity problem could be fixed by only retiring half or a third of the acelas and adding the cars to the consist of the other trains. They are hugely overpowered for their length anyway, and while you can't decouple/couple them on a yard, I'm sure you could connect them somehow.
@FFred-us9tw
@FFred-us9tw 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexnefi they can’t extend the current Acela with more cars because the maintenance buildings can’t handle longer trains. It was looked into in the past but would be prohibitively expensive to reconfigure three different yards and maintenance buildings to fit a longer version of the current Acela. All that aside, As I mentioned above, they all need to be rebuilt anyhow. They are completely worn out and it would cost an enormous amount of money to rebuild them. It doesn’t make financial sense. And again, what I mentioned above about the having multiple brands. It becomes a logistical nightmare and complicates things, it doesn’t make them better. Sticking with one brand and type of equipment makes maintenance and repairs much easier. They are ordering 30 of the new train sets which is plenty of capacity they need for the schedules they run plus additional service.

Very exciting. Nice to see some high-speed equipment. But if Amtrak wants to be more than a glorified commuter train or tourist line, they need to do one thing: be CONSISTENTLY on time. People that need to be places to do things, cannot patronize a service that makes them hours late. Only people that have time to kill will use them.
@FFred-us9tw
@FFred-us9tw 2 жыл бұрын
Amtrak trains are rarely "hours late". Sometimes sure, but not daily. As an example i work 5 round trips a week and i can go weeks with none of my trains being late at all. Issues happen and trains can be late. Just like planes. But the idea that they are consistently late is nonsense .

@@Joesolo13 It's not that simple - some track would easily handle double the Amtrak service daily that it currently sees, even single tracked, if the freight traffic was scheduled and predictable and had adequate passing sidings. Some sections absolutely should be double tracked, and some should see triple or quad track return. Signalling upgrades go hand in hand with this.

Amtrak is required to try and turn a profit. They can't afford and aren't given the funding to add new electrification to (for example) the DC-Richmond segment, much less large stretches like NEC-Chicago or an East Coast-West Coast link. Further, most of their trackage isn't maintained to even 125 mph standards and is shared with slower freight trains, further limiting speeds.

@@daniellewis1789 Yes, I have seen the NEC speed chart. The presence of slower sections is completely normal for HSR lines. The vast majority of HSR lines travel on conventional rail to get to stations and have slow junctions, slow tunnels, sharp turns, etc. What matters is that the HSR high speed sections allow for a total trip duration comparable to flight + airport time. The NEC is basically just a bunch of HSR sections connected by slower track in the cities. That's how all HSR lines work. The older networks (France, Germany, Italy, Japan) have more of this. The newer ones (Spain, China, Korea) have fewer slow sections. That doesn't matter. What matters is that the HSR line creates a superior connection between two destinations that is faster and/or more comfortable than any other mode.
@TohaBgood2

@@daniellewis1789 I'll give you an example. Paris-Bordeaux averages 95 mph in perfect conditions. (SNCF never seems to actually hit that, but let's ignore that fact for now). 95 mph is the schedule average speed even though that entire section is comprised of two sections of 320 km/h (200 mph) and 300 km/h (186 mph) track. How is it that the train only averages 95 mph then? And this is one of the fastest routes in the entire TGV network! You can check the various Shinkansen lines and ICE lines in Germany. It's the same everywhere. There are Shinkansen lines that have 48 mph averages.

The reality on the ground is very different than the "skeptical foamer" viewpoint on the Acela. Look at some reviews by Simply Railway or other HSR/rail youtubers to get a better idea of what the average HSR line is actually like. You'll find that most of those people agree with me. In reality, there are a ton of very similar HSR lines in Europe and Asia. If you actually compare the Acela to it's peers overseas it ranks about average, maybe a hair above. It's a nice service. Very similar to most other services out there. It's not groundbreaking. It's not the best or the fastest in the world. But it is extremely similar to what you find on average. Yes, it needs upgrades to become better. But what we already have is perfectly respectable compared to other services.
