In video 1648 I manage to pick open a BKS Detect3 - a "lowly" 5-pinner - and gutted it to see what secrets it contained.

Robin Ortmann Nice! Door Locks in Germany work different than the things they use in the US and GB. You can secure many double cylinder locks when you are at home from the inside. You lock the door from the inside and leave the key in, this way you can not turn the cylinder from the outside. Makes you sleep way better !

Btw, the ICS: 10 sliders (spring loaded) and 3 pin tumblers (with nasty narrow tips to fit in that key). Everything so tight and precise that the sliders bind against each other, so you easily drop one when on the neighbouring one. Definitely one of the nastiest europrofiles out there. Moreover with a beautifully-looking key that can't be impressioned or decoded from a photo. Have fun!
@CaptainHookNumber1
@CaptainHookNumber1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, the Evva ICS has 10 sprung sliders with false gates and 3 simple (shark finned standard) pin stacks to go with the center bitting. This was intended to allow mechanical access control. Picking them is really tricky and it's effective to take notes during picking or memorize the gate types. It's very similar to the 12 Slider Evva dual. I'd love to see you pick this lock so it gets the attention it deserves! If I can help you with this I'd be happy to help. On my channel I've videos on the ICS and Dual if that helps otherwise you can contact me. Great picking of the BKS and a bit disappointing that the name and the dimples on the key weren't so fancy in the end. Cheers

@CaptainHookNumber1
@CaptainHookNumber1 4 жыл бұрын
@@Pyrolock there are some neat tricks that help with the ping pong problem e.g. Finding the right slider to be a gatekeeper. Once one has sufficient knowledge about the bitting by jiggle testing all gates during picking that slider is set between the true gate and a false gate to prevent the sidebar from entering the false gates too much. These locks really need thinking

Hi Bill, at 0:29 the pin isn´t hardened but those screws are! And yes you´re right, it is hard to snap them, you need a good tool and at least about 4mm standing over the plate to have a chance of breaking it! Modular Systems are often used, specially at EVVA. You need to move it to the left and right plenty times and at a serious angle to snap it, downside of course is that you eventually gonna damage the lock itself with the cam and after you get that thing out something is not working... The Cylinder you´re holding is a modular, meaning you can change the length of it in about 2 minutes and addapt it to a lenth you wish. Kind Regards from Austria, Christian

Hi from Spain! When I got into lockpicking three months ago (I'm still a pure noob), I had no problem opening the Chinese training locks. Then I tried my Tifon gym locker lock, about 5€ in the hardware store, and it was very hard to open. I recall it took me two weeks to open it. I sensed a couple spool pins, and thought to myself I should be wrong because cheapo locks wouldn't be that good. Now I'm confident that European locks are way ahead of what the average American market sell.

Cool, I bought the training cut away lock from multipick and aside from the different keyway it's pretty much the same. A BKS cylinder with 2 spools (front one steel, second brass) and two of those t-pins that I'm really starting to hate. I've gotten really close to picking it but then nothing happens so I take a peek at the side and I can't even tell what's keeping it locked, all pins look perfectly picked, no oversets. It's also really hard to reach the deepest pins and it takes some serious twisting to get all the way up there.

Even for European standards, the BKS has a tight keyway. But most door locks do have paracentric keyways. Nobody here with ill intent picks a lock anymore. Not because it's too difficult, but because there are easier ways to enter someone's house. Burglars here just find targets of opportunity.

Just a few thoughts about the BKS lock being “high security”: The lock in the video is about 30 € for the 5-pin-version without any additional features, so it’s the “low end” variety. There are additional features available (e.g. sidebar, 6 pin version or nickel silver core), which will affect the price, of course. The indents in the tip of the key are necessary to move a cogwheel which blocks the actuator (see www.schloss-shop.com/media/image/6d/ae/3e/detect-innen3.jpg ). This is an additional feature to the lock and I’ve never seen it so far. BKS uses the same key blanks for different types of locks / levels of security. The BKS series 31 (detect3) can be found in large buildings (1000+ locks, e.g. universities, hospitals) where the “costs per door” matter. Usually the level of security on the inside is not much of an issue and the ‘outer shell’ will be upgraded by an alarm system or higher grade/electronic locks. Actually the BKS key can be fitted with an additional transponder to combine mechanical and electronic locks in one system.

Yeah, I probably need to replace a few of Multipicks. You need to remember that I use them for 2-3 hours EVERY DAY, so they get an above average amount of wear, compared to most hobby pickers. The picks are pretty much identical in wear because they are the same thicknesses and made from the same materials. Only the handles are different. Lastly, the SSDev picks have Euro-style thin shafts, so will bend more easily than other, wider-bladed picks.

I’ve been thinking of taking up lock sports, but maybe someone could give me some advice about something? I haven’t been able to find any videos about it, but I’m left handed, so I’m not sure how the technique would be any different? I think I could be somewhat dexterous to do some of it right handed, but I’d much prefer to do it left handed. I feel like if I were to pick a lock left handed, I’d either have to apply tension at a weird angle with my right hand, or pick the lock upside down and tension it more at a 7 or 8 o’clock angle rather than a 1 or 2 o’clock angle as he does in this video...

The two master pin chambers have multiple shear lines. So, if you have a building outfitted with these locks, they can be pinned in such a way that there is a key that can open all locks and keys that can only open one of each of the locks. Very handy for maintenance personnel etc. The downside is that it does reduce security somewhat.

ugly finishing on the BKS's front, weird, you'd tick that's the easiest aspect of all of its manufacturing

It’s a relatively cheap and cheerful lock.

I've been around for almost 1000 videos and still never broken a pick. That said, I don't take any chances with my 0.015" gear.

Are you using Person picks made from Government steel or other high end picks made for an extra strong steel?

@@danieljaworski1294 I get a lot of them from Sparrows, some of the earlier ones from Brockhage. The only set I've bought was the SS Dev Hooks (which are awesome) and everything else was picked out individually. Have you broken any picks? Would you blame the lock (bitting, traps, security pins) or human error (trying to pick warding, forcing pins) for the pick's demise?

@@InsaneFirebat I haven't broken one yet but if I did I would blame myself for being a noob especially since I have a Peterson set. I've bent home made picks to the point that I have to stop and bend them back to finish picking the lock so those aren't going to last very long because I use too much force.
