Thanks. :-) Some people have just way too much money and not enough time I guess, Not my problem lol, I am afraid if Heather or I can't afford something than we better either do without or try to make it ourselves. Cheers, TC TTYL :-)

I worked at an MF dealership from 1965 to 1977 the single most common job was clutch replacements. The 35, 35x, 135,165, and early 175s all had the same clutch apart from the colour of the springs. I did at lease one a week that's over 500 clutches. The 175 could eat a clutch in a couple of weeks with a bad operator. MF brought out a heavy duty modification which went some way to cure the problem then later increased the size of the whole clutch. I once left the depot at 8.30 and was back before 1.00 fitted a new clutch and rear oil seal in a 35x fitted with a loader. The later tractors when they changed the bonnet around 1977 ( I cant remember the model ) had a recall to change the spigot bearing in the flywheel we could do one in two hours on site. It takes me that long to get out of bed now.

That's great Derek... When I got this tractor the clutch was slipping... I just kept adjusting it, But after this clutch job over a year ago, it's still going strong... But I sure could use some advise on adjusting the PTO clutch, When I push in the clutch the pto just keeps going. Thanks again. You take care ttyl... Cheers

Ok when you fitted the new clutch did you adjust the three bolts on the main drive plate. The factory setting was 90 thou. To check it remove the ignition key and put it in your pocket so no one can flick the starter while you are doing this " no joke " there are four large bolts under the centre of the tractor that hold a plate in position ( if there is a loader fitted the loader fits to these bolts ) remove these bolts and plate. There should be no oil in there. looking up inside the bell housing you will see the clutch. Pull out the stop cable first you don't want any chance of it firing while your messing up here. turn the clutch with a lever or something until you see a bolt with a lock nut. This bolt is screwed into the main drive plate or as we called it the bottom plate and then a lock nut to secure it. Between the head of the bolt there is a gap to a lug on another plate this is the pto drive plate. That gap should be 90 thou. however we used to increase this to 110 thou because sometimes the pto would disengage too early " before the transmission had disengaged ". So if yours in not disengaging the fault is most likely this gap is too wide. If you get someone to push the clutch down while your looking underneath you will see what I mean. The only other causes could be oil on the pto plate making it stick to the drive plate " unlikely " or more likely the pto clutch plate is damaged / distorted. This can happen when the tractor is put back together after a new clutch has been fitted. When the engine is pushed back to the transmission it can be a bit of a cow to get it back if the splines are not in line with the clutch plates and if you use slave bolts to pull it back you have to be very careful the plates don't get distorted. I have seen this a couple of times. What you need to do is put in some slave bolts tighten them just enough so the splines touch the plate then turn the flywheel with a screwdriver until it clicks in and also put the pto in gear go to the rear of the tractor and turn the pto by hand until it clicks in. When you have done a few hundred you get the feel of it. Good luck.

You are pretty handy there Cecil. Welding cast is always tricky, but you got it down pat. Nice job! Did you use NiRod or regular rod? So is it back together? Can't wait to see the ole Massey in action again. Take care. Jay

Thanks Jay. I actually just used my small mig welder with a soft gas wire, so it can flex a little without breaking or racking. No I did not get it back together yet... Other project got in my way :-( I will eventually get it done though, I may work on it in between rain showers today , Yeah I miss it as well :-( Cheers take care ttyl :-)

If you only had a foundry and a machine shop, what you could do and make. Instead of doing metal fabrication outside in the cold on your small tablesaw and probably without all the tools you need. The challenge & of course the $$ saved. When it's done it will be better than new, it's fixed by Cecil.
