I noticed that Zippo wicks have what appears to be strands of copper wire braided into them. I figure it is for wind resistance, the copper wire stays hot enough to keep the wick lit when the wind blows. I wonder if the copper wire braid idea would work for this too.

Wrap the paraffin forever wick strip in aluminum foil, or even copper foil and feed it through the paraffin lamp mechanism, just peel off a desired length to expose it for lighting. Experiment with how much is exposed at the bottom. The advantage would be no modifications to the paraffin lamp required and a wider use of more vicious fuels. Compressing the carbon foam to a higher density might be interesting too. Construct a copper or brass sheet channel for the strip to run through down into the tank that is half the thickness of the foam or try various levels of compression on the foam. My guess is the more compression on the foam, the more viscous the fuel the lamp will burn.

@@RickStewart1776 I’m not sure what temp is dangerous, that will require some extra research. I just remember reading about it when learning about hydrogen cells to avoid heating aluminium, in the old days aluminium pots and pans were a big deal but it was realised that aluminium can cause neurological damage and is also classed as a neurotoxin linked to Alzheimer’s. Aluminium is often used in vaccines to trigger an autoimmune response from the body to acknowledge whatever they are vaccinating you for, the problem is the body can’t get rid of aluminium and it resides in the blood brain barrier for life! Just one reason why I don’t drink anything in aluminium cans and refuse to cook with aluminium foil. Yes, cars are made with aluminium blocks and I’m pretty sure I read breathing exhaust fumes aren’t good for you either. 😅😂🤣

Very interesting. I wonder if soaking the 'forever wick' in the fuel first will help. I had a similar situation when running my kerosene hurricane lamp on citronella oil. I needed to soak the standard wick a bit longer to make sure there was oil at the burn point before lighting it. After that it would burn as normal.

How's this for a tangent? I am learning how to keep bees and they've been looking for the best material to soak-up and then slowly release oxalic acid and glycerol mixture as a treatment for the deadly varroa mite. Trouble is some materials fall apart from the acid, and others get nibbled to pieces by the bees etc etc. Others don't really hold enough... there's always an issue. Nobody has thought of using this stuff yet!

Years back a reasercher noticed that hives close to where mushrooms grew were constanly visited by the bees and had no mite problems. He has now found a fungi that thrives at hive temperatures and his paper was published in the science journal Nature. “Directed evolution of Metarhizium fungus improves its biocontrol efficacy against Varroa mites

@@yewtoob007 In parts of the USA I believe it is now approved to use slow-release oxalic acid. Which is a 50:50 mixture of oxalic acid and glycerin. This is then soaked-into something like a thin sponge or a bit of cardboard or shop-towel or whatever, and it is laid across the tops of the frames in the brood-box. Over 70 days, it will slowly release the acid, mostly by touch, and it is very effective in the long term. This is helpful because the effective lifespan of the treatment covers many generations of brood, so the fact that oxalic acid doesn't get into capped cells doesn't matter. It seems to be fairly gentle on the bees, too, compared with vaping or the drizzle method. However, different methods of delivering the acid have their problems. The sponge tends to fall to bits, the shop towel does too and isn't as effective. I think carbon felt is a very good candidate for good delivery and something you can just pick-up afterwards to tidy-up.

I took copper wire and sewed it into the carbon felt. Only thing I have to do is tip the lantern a bit to prime the wick, then light it. Thermal feedback from the copper wire is enough to make it work. Cotton wicks get used up. Carbon felt does not. When you run out of the cotton wick, your lamp is useless. To clean carbon felt if it ever needs it, remove it and burn it hot in a fire. Then it works again with no problems. Oh and I was using Kerosene in that lamp.

I would doubt this. If the flame is burning at the flash point of the oil, and the copper around the flame reaches that temp, then as the heat transfers down the pipe it will also radiate heat in the surrounding air. I would think the copper could raise the oil to a flash point, but it would need a much higher temperature source.

All fire create carbon monoxide to some degree. The dirtier the fuel the worse it us in general. For using any fire source for heating in an enclosed space the burn stream and the air stream have to be separated. Generally your fuel is burnt below a pipe or radiator that then pumps that heat into the desired space while the waste is pumped outside.

interesting that it doesn't work..... is that because the wett-abilty of the carbon is less than the cotton wick or perhaps the random fibre orientation of the carbon felt doesn't wick as well as as one with continuous fibres in the vertical direction it would be interesting to see if a suitable carbon cloth would work as a direct replacement.
@DFPercush

Heating the liquid reduces its viscosity. What that means is that the kinetic energy of the fuel molecules makes them slide past one another more easily and not stick to each other as much. So heat reduces the fuel's attraction to itself. Now if you have another material which has a very similar attractive force to the fuel molecules, it can be slightly less attractive when it's cold, but reducing the viscosity makes those molecules "prefer" the wicking material and start wetting it. That's my guess anyway. The wick is carbon, the fuel is basically carbon, so it's a small gap to overcome.

@DFPercush

The way to tell would be to preheat the fuel source (staying safely below the flash point) and see if it will wet the wick. I think changing the viscosity of the fuel by heating it brings it above some threshold where it's able to grab onto the wick. So capillary effect, to answer the question. P.S. At standard pressure, things are usually either a gas, or a liquid, there's no "almost", but at high pressures you can have supercritical fluids, those are weird.

Absolutely experiment!! theres no limits on experimenting (within obvious safety reasons) Expand brain, test, learn undertand. Thats when great things are discovered. :-) show us too if you like. that would be pretty awesome. i personally think the copper pipe as a heated 'path' for the fuel to be "conditioned". The more copper pipe.. the more heat, slowly stored. meaning somewhere you could actually drill holes in it and have sideways flames. the wick adjuster is merely a pinch roll, exposing the wick. longer wick means the exposed end is no longer helped by the pre-heater copper pipe. so back to the beginning. longer pipe. less wick exposed = sucess

Not convinced by the explanation or hypothesis that the sustained combution is due to the pipe conducting heat downwards. It lit too quickly for that. The flame shield (the top dome cap with the slots for the wick) is to reduce (shield) the wick from too much heat. I would say that the carbon felt was compressed in the pipe thus enabling capillary action by increasig the force. 𝜋(𝐷/2) squared 𝜌ℎ=𝜋𝐷𝜎 cos 𝜃 𝑐 Could this flat felt be permently compress thiner? Perhaps by passing it thru a steel mangle, in the hope that it wicks better in the stove’s proper wick winder? P.S. When did you last check the workshop’s smoke alarms? 😉

Well he mentioned fuel already being in the wick, so maybe he dipped the whole thing at one point. I don't think compression is the answer, it wasn't that tight of a fit. It's all about viscosity. When the fuel molecules don't cling to themselves as much, they can adhere to other stuff better. I think pure carbon is just barely less attractive to the fuel than itself when it's cold, and there's a threshold where it gets thin enough to wet it.

@@DFPercush As the fuel heats the density goes down - yes? Yet, you will see that 𝜌 has little effect compared to 𝐷 𝐷 = diameter of the capillary space, 𝜌 = density of the fuel, 𝜎 = surface tension of the fuel, 𝜃𝑐 = contact angle of the fuel within the capilary space. ℎ = height that the fuel rises to. From that we can also get: ℎ= (4𝜎 cos 𝜃𝑐) / 𝜌𝐷 The vesocity may well go down which will help with thicker fuels like vegetable oils and animal fats which flow too slowly to keep up with the speed at which they are consumed. However, that has no effect (given enough time) on capillarity. It is the space between the fibres which matter. Too far appart (as with this felt in its form as suppled) and it won’t wick - unless of course, someone comes up with a viable “Ah but you have overlooked…” explination. Asbestos has low thermal conductivity yet has been used for wicks for some 6,000 years.

@@Nuts-Bolts What I'm suggesting is that there's a binary factor in the system that turns on or off completely. That being, whether the fuel is able to wet the surface of the wick. Try drawing mercury up a glass capillary tube. If the surface is hydrophobic, or whatever-liquid-phobic, then that formula doesn't apply. But lowering the viscosity can flip that switch.

In the perfect fuel video, would copper oxide powder liberate its oxygen to iron the way iron oxide will to aluminium but in a more controled fashion? Is there a way to transport oxygen ions to an electrode made of compressed carbon powder that is porous. Is it possible to make a porous iron dust core? A porous electrically conductive iron dust core? How fast can iron powder be made to rust by chemical action or electrolytic chemical action? I think we're back to the iron battery again.....

Why fill it with paraffin?!? You could have used used veggy oil instead, because you're using a felt wick.

Robert, I really enjoy your videos but lately you've often used a liquid you call paraffin. To me, that's a sealing wax, solid at room temperature. What is the fuel called in the U.S. please. Thanks.

Can you just keep the original wick as low as possible and WICK the carbon felt on top. Since the carbon felt WICK doesn't burn? So cut a small portion of the carbon wick so that it touches the original. Why replace the whole wick?All you need is the carbon felt touching the original for wicking purposes. Like a zippo lighter. Why replace the cotton when only the wick burns. Just asking.

What if you pyrolize the ribbon wick and then used that? You can pyrolize it by putting it in a tiny tin can (such as those empty paint tins sold at hardware stores) punching a hole in it, and placing it in a fire until all the volatiles are burned off. Would a pyrolized ribbon wick work? I don't see why it wouldn't; The weave is tight enough, and the only difference is that it would be carbon rather than cotton if you pyrolize the wick to make it into char-cloth. Maybe the copper pipe you squeezed the carbon felt into is squeezing the fibers close together so that the capillary action can actually work, whereas when loose, the fibers aren't close enough to actually wick the parafin. The ribbon wicks are woven, so the fibers are close together. Could you test this theory?
