DIY Carbon Fiber Felt Burners. 3 sizes. video shows a few DIY Carbon Felt Wick "Burners" I put together. various uses include heating, lighting and/or cooking. these could also be used with some of my previously posted air heaters videos. the carbon felt seems to work great as a wick. the material "wicks up" liquid at least as well as cotton, possibly even better, and since the wicks don't visibly "burn up", they should last for a very long time. wicks were made from a 1/4" 6mm carbon fiber felt welding blanket 12" x 12".
*the fuel i use is a bio-ethanol blend. You can find it by searching for 'indoor ventless fireplace fuel'. It's extremely clean burning. No soot or smoke at all. only releases a little carbon dioxide and some water vapor.
*note: the last part of the video shows the wicks being used in my DIY alcohol lamps.

This works well with olive oil or vegetable oil too which is much cheaper. i made 2 oil candles with 5 wicks in each. Put under a cut section of cast iron gutter upside down which acts as a soot catcher just incase then dissipates the heat front and back of the gutter. Im curently using this as heat source in living room which with -4 degrees Celsius outside its doing a great job as its 19 degrees in here.

I also heard carbon fiber could wick up used fryer oil which is always in abundance, with that I have a question maybe you can help me out with I have an old perfection heater that uses kerosene and a wick well I want to convert it to using oil and carbon fiber wick I understand that's why I need ventilation but what do you think? Possible?

@@johnnymac8264 no I've seen other people need to do this with vegetable oil but I haven't needed it with olive oil at all. I use cotton lamp wicks which need lifted sometimes as it burns, carbon felt would work better as it wicks well but doesn't burn. I'm going to swap the wicks out soon.

@@johnnymac8264 That helps. I've been using denatured alcohol fuel i got from lowes to start soybean oil. It's kind of tricky and a bit erratic. I made a couple different burners from small camping pots and a small tin can from the dollar store. Sometimes they don't stay lit. The larger pan does better.

@@jayfredrickson9544 Robert Murray Smith tried to swap the wick from a greenhouse paraffin heater with a carbon felt wick which is similar to a perfection heater, it didn't work but when he tried it in a different one it did. It seems that the carbon felt wicks very well if the wick is contained in something like a bit of copper pipe so if if a straight swap doesn't work I'd try getting a bit of 15 or 22mm copper pipe and flattening itso it fits the shape of the wick wick if it's like a 1 inch wide wick.

I wonder if people will find heating by biofuel fuel cheaper than turning on their central heating system? Could you show how long using 4 0z of biofuel would last using your method of a carbon felt wick? I just got my natural heating gas bill, and it was over $110 for 30 days, and i live in a moderate climate state. It only hit freezing one night.

@AnneAndersonFoxiepaws
@AnneAndersonFoxiepaws 2 ай бұрын
I think capilliaries are generally smaller than hypodermic needles but, I could be wrong because those diabetic ones are really thin. You could try it with water or something to see if you got that wicking effect.

@desertsun02
@desertsun02 4 сағат бұрын
hi. i usually use regular scissors to cut the carbon felt. (technically they are barbers scissors but they are very similar to regular scissors). i don't think i would use a box cutter to cut it. those might give a jagged cut. you can also cut it with tin snips if you like but regular scissors are really all that's needed.

Not sure about the alcohol fuel but when fueling the burners with oil or grease only use for emergencies not regular use. They produce soot which is very harmful to the lungs. (Do some research on lung disease and native Alaskans). Women who did the cooking over oil lamps had a lot of lung issues as a result.

hi. the ethanol blend fuels (what i used) are 100x cleaner than the oils or greases. ethanol burns 100% particulate free and produces no smoke or soot at all. the only things produced when you burn ethanol are water vapor and a small (inconsequential) amount of carbon dioxide.
