16th Raúl Prebisch Lecture by The Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados on 10 September 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The prestigious Raúl Prebisch Lecture is periodically delivered by a prominent thinker or head of state. It often tackles trade and development issues, but also covers other topical global concerns.
Prime Minister Mottley’s lecture is entitled "Invisible Yet Indispensable."
If ever there was a time when the world needed an international order to harness global efforts to tackle challenges too great for any one nation, it is today. Climate change is not a theory, nor prospect, it is the lived reality for an increasing number.
Small island states, coastal and low-lying states are on the front line. But the world order has been fundamentally undermined by the ad-hoc exercise of power over universal principle. The more international institutions are democratic and treaty based, the more they have been stripped of power and funding.
Today power resides in self-selected groups of the large, and not just political power but the power of business too. Most countries feel vulnerable and unprotected. But the crumbling of the international order will hurt the large and powerful just as much as the weak and small: no country can stand up to climate change and related global threats on their own.
It is time to reinvent the international order. One that builds local resilience as well as promoting global competitiveness, for it will not stand if many of its members feel invisible and dispensable.

Mia Mottley is like a breeze of fresh clear blowing to clear the toxic stale and contaminated air of corrupt self-serving, selfish current leaders. There is hope for not only the world, but poor nations and future generations. The world definitely need such leader like Mia Mottley who is articulate smart and more importantly fearless and principled. Blessings.

The voice of reasoned dialogue in the sphere of power and influence is like a very small oasis in a large desert of willful ignorance and intellectual dishonesty. Speak on Mother/ Sister Mia your voice is a refreshing drink from that oasis. May The God of Justice abundantly bless you and your family. For your family is large because you have embraced the world as your family. As a boy I always had respect for “Bajans” who lived in Trinidad and Tobago. You make me fully understand why I had this special care for Your countrymen who lived in Trinidad & Tobago May the Lord watch over your life. Thank you for being YOU.

This is a genuine contribution, it is consistent with the PM's first UN speech after becoming PM of Barbados, and thereafter. This however, is separate to our domestic affairs.

A must watch for all but especially the Caribbean and Diaspora. Are we not hearing a visionary Leader? Will her performance prove we deserve Leaders who do the people's will here in the Caribbean region? 'The Republic of Barbados' has been on the table for almost 44 years, Mia made it happen for them. Quite impressive so far. To all Barbadians I wish you all success to your wonderful Republic nation and its bright future

Caribbean Islands must trade with each other just like how African countries will be trading with one another by way of the Free Trade Area. Must also trade with Africa. The Caribbean must also be included in the FREE TRADE AREAS!!!!
@caribbeanbbc
@caribbeanbbc 2 жыл бұрын
Isn't the Caribbean Community (Caricom) already a free trade area sir ? The treaty of Chaguaramas (circa 4th July 1973) was the foundation for not only the free movement of citizens throughout the Caribbean but was the thinking behind the agreement and although it isn't perfect and could be greatly improved, to suggest that it doesn't exist is either disingenuous at worse or a genuine lack of appreciation for the post-independent history of the Caribbean region. As for Africa, I agree that more effort must be shown in the area of trade and the free movement of both people's who are undeniably linked by history and culture and that is long overdue.

South Africans, let us take back our land by the ballots instead of the bullets. Be patient as we will overcome this struggle without shedding the blood of our brothers and sisters. The enemies want us to fight and kill each other instead of uniting Africa. Julius Malema ask that we work hard to convince our people that the way out of poverty is to control the economy. Without the land there will never be ECONOMICAL FREEDOM!!!

Yes we might be trading, but we must be trading more and be united as one African nation of the Caribbean. Just as how we demands the United States of Africa, likewise we demands the United Caribbean Islands including Cuba and Haiti!!!!!
