Thanks for the ride. Love that Talmadge Bridge!! My dad said that he listened to R.E.M. a lot in High School (maybe college, too), when I asked him what music he listened to the most when he was my age. However, to my surprise, he doesn't own any R.E.M. CD's (if he does, he never listens to them or told me about them), so basically I hadn't heard much of their music before. I'm sure I've heard a song or two in the past, but this is the first time I've been vividly introduced to R.E.M., so thank you Jim. It is good music for sure.

I miss the days as a kid having road trips from ATL to SAV. The state of GA changed the exit numbers somewhere in early 2000 because I remember the I-516 was Exit 34 and the Talmadge Bridge was Exit 36 And its true about how mundane I-16 looks between Macon and Savannah.

So true about I-16. Mostly rural and very boring. Not very scenic. However, you forget all that when it ends in Savannah. I love Savannah. And can't wait to visit it again soon.

I agree. I live in Dublin ( I-16, exits 58 thru 49 ). As many times as I've been to Savannah, their roads are just as rough as Macon. And the scent you pick up the minute you get to Savannah.

I'm probably taking a trip down to Saint Simons Island next weekend, and the trip options are a U.S. highway or I-16 to I-95. I might honestly take the first option to avoid the endless purgatory that is I-16.

Very nice drive through. I-516 just makes no sense than "Savannah just wants another interstate." But good chilled-back selection of R.E.M. I keep forgetting that there's so many layers to their music.
@Freewayjim7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I agree, I think they'd have got along just fine without the I-516 designation. I'm not a huge REM fan, much of the music is quirky IMO but there are some gems there.

Watching these videos and your live streams, I-95 is starting to look like an old, familiar friend (and I haven't driven it since the late '80s!). I guess I *will* be using an REM tune later, too. The "Glenwood incident" took day #3 and all of Northern Colorado away from us... "Can't get there from here". REALLY looking forward to Charleston!!!

As a graduate of UGA, I dig the REM soundtrack. I like how I-16 ties in to the Talmadge Mem. Bridge, but that's about the only interesting thing about that road. The new bridge from SC to the main span looks great too. Maybe things will improve in Macon along I-16 in coming years... I just realized that I-516 is the only interstate I haven't drove in its entirety, I'm missing the mile or two north of I-16. Oh well.

I-16 is a pretty boring ride. Once you get a few miles past I-95, and a couple of miles past freeway ends, isnt the Savannah bus station on the right basicly in downtown Savannah? I remember taking a Greyhound to Jacksonville from Atlanta and had to transfer at the Savannah station to finish the route to Jacksonville down 95. I remember seeing a big bridge closeby, now I look at the map I see it was US 17 right on the SC border. For some reason I always thought it was the bridge that went to Tybee. They don't play around on those Greyhound buses. I remember we made a pit stop in Macon at the Macon Greyhound bus station (at the beginning of I-16 I believe), and there were 4 Bibb county police cars waiting. They had drug dogs come in and sniff around all over the bus and arrested some guy for having some pot in a mason jar. 3 deputies dragged him off the bus, I was like damn dude.
@waltersaul18077 жыл бұрын
One of my favorite cities. Thanks for the great footage of the Talmadge Bridge in both directions and for all the END signs. I hope you will come back to Savannah and take in the Veterans Parkway, US 80 east to its end in Tybee Island (bring change for parking!), and the President's Way. Can't wait until Charleston! I-26 is a far cry from I-16.

@tomsmith55847 жыл бұрын
Did anyone notice that very non-MUTCD sign advertising Georgia peaches at 1:33? Also with the amount of coin the Georgia Department of Transportation is dropping in the Atlanta metro area, you think they can spare some change to get some new I-516 shields for those gantry signs. Perhaps it's time somebody from the Guerilla Sign Company paid them a visit.
@ways71636 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more..Being a Savannah resident and driving on I-516 almost everyday, it's just harsh to see those old rusted gantries, and old signage. Some signs from the 80s still exist..Every penny's being dropped into Atlanta..All we are getting so far in Savannah are minor repaves, and new guard rails.
