I adopted a puppy from a local shelter thinking it was a "Yellow Lab Mix." At just 8 weeks that's what she looked like to me and I didn't question the shelter. After about two months one ear started to pop up followed by the other ear. Well, I knew she wasn't a Lab but what kind of dog then was she? At first I thought she might be a Basenji and she looked it--but not 100%. Then after additional research I determined she might be a Thai Ridgeback Dog. Now I'm wondering if she might be a Carolina Dog! No matter really because she is the best dog, loyal, smart, beautiful. I would have ten of these dogs if I could.

All this seems a pretty accurate description. But, I've lived in an apartment the entire 11 years I've had my Carolina Dog. She is well adjusted to my city life style. I only have to take her out for a walk, usually 2 times a day. Also, it is true there coats are very low maintenance. But, they do shed a lot. They are very powerful for their size and can vertically jump a 6' fence with ease. This page recommends them for first time owners, but understand, they are very intelligent and strong willed, and need strong steady consistent training. But once they understand their place in the pack, they are obedient, loving and very good with children. They don't seem to be big barkers, however they can be vocal and make a sound as if they are talking. If properly socialized they are ok with other dogs, but keep in mind, they are very pack minded and will not tolerate another dog, encroaching on their dominance. This will certainly lead to a very violent confrontation. Once on the defensive, they can become extremely fierce. Do not trust them with small pets like hamsters or gerbils or rabbits. They are finicky eaters and do best with a high protein diet, and cooked chicken or pork. Changing foods, can be a difficult exercise. If this helps you decide to get one, do it. They are unique, loving and fun pets. They can follow you anywhere, love to swim, hike, play...but can be a couch potato if called for. Mine is amazing with small children, gentle and patient. They have very good memories as well.

rhbramley you are spot on with your description. I too, have lived with my CD for 10 years in an apartment. I walk her twice a day, and that works. She can be a couch potato too.

This video is very inaccurate and more than half the dogs pictured are not even Carolina Dog types. Carolina Dogs average height measured at the withers, generally ranges from 17¾ to 19 5/8 inches (45 to 50 cm), but can vary according to build. Type and symmetry are more important than size. Weight is dependent on the overall size and build of the individual, and varies from approximately 30 to 44 pounds (15 to 20 kg). Some from breeders have been larger. Females are generally lighter in build than dogs, but the sexes overlap broadly in both size and weight. At no time should the breed appear heavy bodied. Carolina Dogs are not for everyone and only experienced dog owners should attempt to own one because they are primitive and require training, extra socialization and exposure to different environmental things. They are by nature suspicious of strangers, strange things and are extremely aware of their environments. Most are not overly friendly with strangers and take some time to warm up to people not within their pack. They notice even the littlest things out of place and will alert you to it making them very good watch dogs. You can have them in an apartment, trailer or a home as a lot depends on the individual dog when it comes to energy level and how much exercise they need and get. Some are medium to high and others are low. Talk to your breeder if you are getting one as a puppy and they should be able to help you pick the right puppy for your life style.

That depends on the owner, you don't sound like you would be a good candidate for any animal ownership. Mine are both affectionate, love to be always next to me and have never run away.
