“Boho” today is a mass-marketed brand. Back in the hippie-dippy ‘70’s, we penniless college girls would repurpose old dresses and other finds from resale shops. It was a one-of-a-kind look which has thankfully seen its day. 😉

Well, there i s a shade of yellow, for everyone. But one needs very careful colour counselling to find the right shade. Yellow is best worn with white, black or grey. I accessorize in shades of yellow. But I go easy on the shade otherwise. Unlike orange, it's n o t a serene colour. You may find you want to get changed after wearing yellow close to your face for a while.

I just ordered a mustard yellow pair of fleece lined leggings to wear with the all black outfit I walk the dog with in winter. It should add a bit of brightness on grey, dull days and make it easier to spot us in traffic at dusk. But I would never wear yellow next to my face.

I was recently in France for 5 months for my student exchange and I have to admit - I've rarely seen French people where the things you do not wear. Even on a grocery store run, the ordinary French person dresses very well. Your disdain for American casual wear ( hoodies, athleisure etc.) Is soooo very French. Hahahaha, love it. It's easy to slip into "comfortwear' and get lazy but my mother is like you and always reminds me to "be elegant even at home". :)

I grew up in a French/dutch family, the women wearing stylish combinations of clothes/jewellry/accessoires. A good hairdresser and a good seamstress, were in high demand! Clothes were adapted to ones body. I do this myself nowadays. A boxy shirt looks much better on me when tailored! I do use lemony yellow accents, I do use fake eye lashes on a night out (the "natural" ones and cut them in half and in shape to align in the middle with my own lash length and on the outside being longer, to create illusion of a cat's eye) I do wear a legging under a longshirt with brogues or ballerina's depending the occassion. My wardrobe is classic french, but with my own twist.....

Such good advice Anne-Marie, the only item on this list that I do own is leggings but I always wear them like tights with a knee length top or dress. I despair when I look around and see so many women wearing clothes that don't fit or suit them, what happened to elegance and decorum!

I couldn't agree more on such a list! Although I have to admit I wear some of the items but only at home as loungewear, why people would wear such things in any other situation is beyond me. I will add to the list dirty shoes, nothing breaks a nice outfit like a pair of dusty or muddy shoes.

Marge the 'heavy set'' women are the ones pushing the leggings fad. They fit. The women can sit down and breath. But flattering?? NO way. I have seen a few women at the market with leggings, or tights, that are so THIN they may as well be naked. Really tactless!! Of course I wear crocs in my garden and at the campsite when it rains. Not going to ruin my good boots or shoes. It's hard figuring out how to dress as a senior citizen without looking frumpy. I see other women my age and I cringe. I don't want to look like that.

@@roxannegordon6162 I’m thin and fine boned and love leggings because many other kinds of bottoms, with the exception of jeans and wide leg trousers that fit well, look awful on me. I can’t wear most clothing made for older women because I don’t have a typical body. I just disappear in the stuff if I can even find something in my size. Anyone can look good in leggings if they style them well. They have to be heavy enough that you don’t see every outline or crease in your body (and even young women with perfect bodies have them). Some even come in fabric that can make you look better. You don’t buy the cheapest pair at Walmart or wear them with anything tight on top. One of my favourite ways to style them is with a turtleneck under a shirtdress that falls just above the knee, or a nice slightly oversized sweater in quality cotton or wool. They make me look taller and my legs look longer. If you’re heavier on top they can look good with a tunic or a long white cotton or linen shirt. I wear mine under jeans and pants in winter to keep from freezing. Some don’t like the look but I’m all for wearing them under a dress with ankle or knee high boots instead of tights. They’re more comfortable and keep your legs warmer.

I have what I’d call regular Uggs, that is simple ankle boots that look like other brands but are made by Ugg. The model name is Kesey. Although they seem well made they’re not warm enough for Canadian winters. When it gets really cold I reach for my Joan of Arctic Sorels or my rated to -70C Baffins. They’d both give classic Uggs good competition in an ugly boots contest. The fur trim on the Sorels make me laugh. A feminine touch on boots for shovelling snow?

I went to Paris for the 1st time in 1995 and I fell in love with how French women dressed. It totally changed me. At the time, everyone was wearing sweats everywhere in the US but not a single woman in Paris was wearing them. Not one. I noticed other things too and took them to heart. My rule of thumb ever since has been: don't wear anything you wouldn't be proud to wear in Paris (no yoga pants in public, none of the things you mentioned, etc). So, always keeping an eye out for what French women are wearing...which is exactly why I subscribe to your channel! LOVED THIS video. Merci bien for sharing it.

In the winter when there’s no place to sit outside and watch people walk by I turn to KZfaq to visit places all over the world. The difference between the way Parisians dress is striking especially how effortless it is. Italians seem well dressed but send a “look at me” message. The British can look polished but some are more willing to look eccentric and flashy. New Yorkers seem a bit more like the British but more casual. I’ve tried to decode the effortless part of Parisians. There’s this sense that they put the outfit together with thought and always check themselves in the mirror before stepping out the door. But they haven’t overthought the way they look. Comfort comes first. Minimalism triumphs over accessorising too much. They don’t seem to want to draw attention to themselves yet still want to look good. Most have excellent posture. And wear what suits them and not what happens to be the latest trend. This winter I’m mainly seeing them in classic wool coats, almost always accessorised with a scarf, crossbody bags with a few small and nice looking backpacks, lots of jeans including skinny ones, ankle boots and sneakers/trainers. Some of this reminds me of the way my mom (who wasn’t Parisian or even from France) used to dress, minus the jeans and sneakers of course.

@@polishtheday I did notice a difference between Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Finland on one side, and France, Italy, Ireland Brazil on the other side, the other side has women in a dress and heels far more often, and not always to dress up, while on the one side that is an absolute rarity and not that common even when dressed up. You could say weather, but Ireland is not exactly a tropical climate.

@@jamegumb7298 Did you find that women wore heels more in France? On the channels I watch most seem to be in sneakers/trainers or boots. The Italians seem to be the biggest fans of heels followed by the British, but that’s just what I’ve seen on KZfaq. I used to live in an Italian neighbourhood (now a former Italian neighbourhood) in Vancouver. There was and still is an Italian shoe store there called Kalena’s where Italians from all over the city would shop. You just knew they were Italian from how well dressed they were. There was also a supper club down the street with live music where both the men and women would get dressed up on Friday nights and gather. I’ve also seen Italian wedding parties held in a park in Montreal. They’re not only fabulously dressed but everyone in the family seems to be terrific at dancing.

@@polishtheday No not on YT, I went to those places myself. Not a hard rule but it did stand out. Not so much in Paris but Caen, Le Havre, somewhat Marseille if you stay out of the dodgy places (not counting the ladies along the street at night, seriously stay out of Marseille). Brest not at all from memory, a little at night. Probably dependent on the area, France is pretty big. In the UK (granted only really spent time in London) more feminine dress seems to be in certain areas and at night. An Italian can rarely be overdressed it seems. At least in most of Rome and Sicily. North (vacation at Lago Maggiore) I mostly drove past so no real idea, except at the lake during vacation in the high season so loads of tourists, bikinis, swimsuits.

Yes, it gets quite cold where we live in high country Australia New England area, so leggings are very good for layering. I never just where leggings, I always wear with them under a dress or skirt... dress as in a baby doll dress style. I'm over 50 & have primary lymphedema so feel self-conscious & also dress for modesty. My nan who was from Normandy always dressed nicely, never overdone, she kept her clothing simple... if going out to a nice restaurant, she would just add simple things to look more dressy. I can't wear overly bright colours, I have found mutted colours suit my tones better, like mustard yellow.. also now in my 50's discovering flax linnen looks nice on me & feels comfy.. dressy but not too over dressy esp for the country! Also my french nan mostly wore flats (they were simple but dressy looking), strappy heel sandles with medium height heel (usually nude in colour) & when dressup heeled courts or high heels. Her look was never daggy, but it was kept simple & suitable for the weather, or for the occasion. I would say simple, comfy classic french style.. but things are different for different regions.. My aunt who was a resistance fighter during ww11 & lived out her life edge of Paris ... choose practical, comfortable, but stylish... both were always feminine looking :)

Many years ago I happened on a photo of myself wearing leggings. I was so shocked by the sight that I destroyed the photo, pretended it never happened and needless to say, have NEVER worn leggings again. I agree with most of your other tips too, but admit to a weakness for yellow. You see, I am petite and unobtrusive, and yellow makes people notice me! :)

Direct, to the point, and correct. French Chic rules are the epitome of style and elegance and deviation is a slippery slope. To each his or her own when it comes to their style of course, but I have learned so much from sticking to this process to achieve the elegance of French Chic. Thank you, Anne-Marie. ❤️

My first rule: do not purchase or wear something because it is "in fashion". I have always admired women who know their body type and what clothing suits My second rule is to build an infrastructure of a wardrobe, the super basics in best quality I can afford, great blacks--the trousers, the long sleeve top, the turtleneck, the cardigan sweater and the standard long sleeve sweater, classic simplicity easy to dress up with scarves. Comfortable shoes. Knowing my best colors and although I love some yellows--they all make me look like I have end stage liver disease, will not compensate for complexion with makeup. Last basic rule: as little makeup enhancement as needed, light tinted moisturizer, light mascara, barely blush if at all, lipstick varies Rather than spend a good deal of money on makeup I prefer to have manicures and pedicures.

Heather…let me tell you they make those very expensive, torn/ripped jeans. I am 55, and my parents had a friend in the late 70s who cut his jeans to make shorts and when these were washed they shred where they have been cut. Now, when the industry found out how people were destroying their jeans to make shorts, this was the start of the trend. The trend didn’t pick up for another 20+ yrs but now they are sold and worn by young adults in the US only because this has not picked up in Europe.

There was a time back in the 80s I think when one wore 'city' shorts with opaque tights- and flats, never heels! I actually think Princess Diana wore that look a couple times too. The shorts had to be tailored, with pleats, and black of course, and worn with a blazer. It had to be just right, so a very limited outfit.

Agreed with everything you've said. The worst things on women: low-cut jeans/trousers with thongs/underwear showing and bras showing under cut-out or backless dresses - the quickest way to look cheap and common. And nobody should go out of the house wearing leggings - no one looks good in them and they leave nothing to the imagination. And ripped jeans (however expensive they are) are ridiculous on anybody past the teen-age years.

Leggings are great for exercise and sport, which take place out of the house. The best ones wick sweat away and don't restrict movement. And they pair well with sunscreen hoodies in the summer and bulky hoodies in the fall/ winter. The key is puckingvthem for appropriate times.
