Loved those 2 safari reviews. Would be very interested to see a video on your whole dino collection. :)

it would be cool to see a Papo top 10! not sure how accurate Papo figures are but to me they look accurate.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I only have 2, so it would be a very short list 😁 Papo has been doing very dubious offerings in recent years, and I don't know what is the direction they are going in. Witness their Protoceratops offering for instance. It's sad because Papo was once regarded very highly for its highly detailed sculpt. I really hope they can get it together soon, as I would love to see them reclaim some of their former favour.

We now know that Tyrannosaurus rex did not had feathers as we thought there’s a paper that Dr. Thomas carr did

It was never something I could fully believe. A few patches here and there maybe. But a six ton animal completely covered? Very hard to comprehend. Think about the dead giveaway all those feathers would be to would be predators.

The great thing about the Triceratops to me as a paleontologist is the scales and osteoderms - that really is VERY similar to the actual skin impressions that we have for Triceratops where you have these broad scales across the side of the body with the occasional protruding nodule - I don't know how intentional that was but if you go take a look at Mark Witton's blog post on dinosaur skin you'll find some good examples there. Now, of course, Safari Ltd.'s quality is a good notch lower than, say, PNSO or Nanmu, but it's got a solid place in my heart, especially the 1993 Velociraptor, which I had as a kid back then and have now on my desk behind me as I write this facing off against CollectA's awesome Protoceratops. EDIT: Ah, I see you reference the skin impression - good on you ;)

Yes the good old Lane specimen. Perhaps as a palaeontologist you could explain how it could go so long without a proper published description? 😫 By the way also a pleasure to have a real palaeontologist drop in. I've actually had quite a few drop by here with a hello and pearls of wisdom!

At the moment I only have one Safari figure. But in the future, I'm hoping to get as much as I can. It'll take maybe years 😅😅but I will one day❤ And my favorite Safari Ltd figures list would be.... 1. Baryonyx (Love this figure) 2. Feathered Velociraptor (Most accurate Velociraptor figure out there I think) 3. Megacerops 4. Vagaceratops 5. Archaeopteryx (Most accurate Archaeopteryx figure I think) 6. Malawisaurus 7. Anzu Wyliei 8. Regaliceratops 9. Patagotitan 10. Edmontosaurus

Thank you for contributing your top ten list as well! I haven't got the Baryonyx yet though I might as some point. I'm glad to see someone else remembers the Megacerops and the Vagaceratops! These are easily forgotten by most people. I am wondering if I will get the Patagotitan. Will need to see some inhand images first!
@MrRajithasandaruwan

I think Safari Vagaceratops figure is the one and only Vagaceratops figure out there 🤔 And even though Nanmu Baryonyx looks so damn striking, Safari Baryonyx is the most accurate and affordable. And my dear Sir, you know I love mammals as well. So I'll never skip that Megacerops. And about the Patagotitan, I think it'll be a hit along with their upcoming 2022 releases. All in all Safari is definitely a company that deserve so much love and respect ❤

Not a fan of the feathered T. Rex - specifically because it's an example of current paleoart going too far and wide with the notion of feathered dinosaurs despite skin impressions from T. Rex itself as well as other closely related species which demonstrate that it had - at least over the main portions of the body including the neck - scales, not feathers (and if one employs a bit of logic it's easy to understand why: feathers generally serve 1 of 3 functions - 1. Flight, 2. Display or 3. Insulation or a combination of the above, and with a 9 to 10 ton adult T. Rex we can immediately rule out flight and given the hothouse environment of late Cretaceous north America and the sheer mass of the animal - big animals take a long time to cool down, which is why big African mammals tend to be largely hairless if they weigh over a ton or so - so insulation is unlikely as an adult....this leaves display, and the most likely place for display feathers on a Rex - since we can eliminate the sides of the body for the most part - would be along the neck and top of the back, if present at all). Of course, there ARE earlier basal Tyrannosaurids that had feathers - but it is a mistake to extrapolate from that and assume all did, just as it'd be a mistake to assume all mammals are covered in fur - they're not. So a fully feather-coated T. Rex is simply not accurate to what we know or to the application of basic thought exercises on the matter. Now, a juvenile or especially HATCHLING T. Rex is a TOTALLY different story and I wouldn't be in the least surprised if a very young Rex had insulating feathers (night in the Cretaceous for a small animal would still at times get a bit chilly). One could be excused for running a line of feathers along the back of an adult but a full coating? Simply incorrect. That SAID, I do appreciate that they at least made an effort at a more dynamic color scheme than we usually see with the usual earth-toned Rexes. I could certainly see a big adult Rex sporting some flashy colors above the eyes and on the face as a whole. We known face biting was a thing with Tyrannosaurs, so same-species combat and therefor competition was certainly a fact of life for them, and one thing is for sure among LIVING dinosaurs (birds) - color often plays a role in display.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 2 жыл бұрын
Haha can I assume you're not a fan of Luiz Rey? 😁 Truly I agree that there tends to be periods of irrational exuberance when it comes to feathers and colours. I never could understand why T Rex was given a full-feathered treatment. Just because a basal form has it is no guarantee it will. Features get lost with derivation all the time. As you say, flight is obviously out. Mass homeothermy rules out need for insulation. More crude and less scientific than that, I find it hard to believe a large animal like that leaving a trail of feathers wherever it went, making for a most colour carpet to the Cretaceous flooring and adding an interesting background detail to paleoart everywhere.

I'm also happy to see Regaliceratops here; truly it's a beautiful figure that deserves better paint apps. And of course, the Camarasaurus and Sauropelta I can easily imagine being on most people's lists!
