Tesla has made vast improvements to their Model 3 - in December I tested the rear-wheel-drive Highland version over a distance of 1000 km. The temperatures during the test were typical for Switzerland with winterly conditions and temperatures rarely above 5° C and in the mountains, I experienced temperatures down to -8° C.
Despite having the small 61 kWh LFP battery and just one electric motor, the car performed really well with fast acceleration, excellent traction, low consumption and a good range. Comparable cars from the competition typically have 20-30% higher consumption in these conditions.
And the build quality of the Model 3 Highland is very convincing. The Model 3 for Europe is built at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory and proves that the Chinese know how to build good cars, too!
The tyres used were Pirelli Sottozero winter tyres in the dimension 235/45 R18.
I hope you enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching and please subscribe to my channel!
Filmed in the Swiss alps in December 2023. Filmed and produced by DNTS Productions.

If you get confused about the indicatores, just remember that the right turn signal always points towards the center of the steering wheel no matter the position.

🥴Yes, ok, but still suboptimal. I find that holding your thum on the right turn signal button from when you enter the roundabout works reasonably well. But I do not like Tesla's solution.

I already have mine for a month, but the AWD version. I agree a lot about the quality, is a well finished car and has many features that you can find in cars in higher price range. However, as you mention, it has several "annoyances". 1. The BIGGEST one, the turn indicators. * Not having them in a fixed place bothers me a lot. Here in Belgium you have a lot of roundabouts, is very difficult to indicate when you are going to exit. * You always need to indicate before turn, otherwise it will be hard. * Some times in the highway, you press the wrong button (maybe in a stress condition), and is difficult to know which one you pressed. There is no indication, like in the normal cars, the lights in the dashboard * Other times, pressing the button does not work, so you have to press another time or harder * The lack of the normal "sticks" makes difficult to share the car to other people 2. Cruise control * I think I have like a 80% working rate for this. You have a small wheel to scroll up or down to increase or decrease the speed. If you scroll like 3 or 4 "clicks", it increase or decrease the speed by 5 Km/h, and you may fail this last frequently. So keep scrolling one by one * The last update, now allows you to disable the wipers. But again, it does not respect my preferences. If the wipers are turned off in the configuration and you turn the cruise control on, the wipers are changed to Auto and you have to disable them back again. * When the car detects a new speed limit, it automatically slows down if is lower that the previous one. In several situations, it detected wrongly the speed limit sign and it slows down without any reason and you start fighting with the car to speed up. It doesn't allows you to set a higher speed either. 3. Autosteer (like a cruise control but keeps your car centered in the lane) * I configured to set it on by making double click on the scroll wheel button in the steering wheel. A lot of times, when I have the cruise control on and try to start the Autosteer, it fail to recognize the double click and it disables the cruise control. The first times it happened, I paniqued because the car start breaking (because of the Regenerative Braking) in the highway and I had cars at the back. I learned that if I want to turn on the Autosteer, always put the feet in the accelerator! * Same other problems as the cruise control * Also problems with the high lights. When Autosteer is turned on, it change the settings to automatically turn on the high lights when needed. The problem is it turn them in the highway and bother other cars. So, you have to manually change the configuration to use the lower only. But there is a catch, when you park the car, the car lights will not turn off!!! You have to turn them off manually. I stopped using Autosteer at night or in low light conditions, to avoid disable all the time the wipers and lights, even is a really good option. * I think if you switch between Cruise control and Autosteer, you have to change back the wipers and lights again because are restored to Auto. I think, this are the 3 most annoying things that you will have. The last 2 are fixable by a software update, but the first one, we should complain a lot and maybe have a recall from the goverment to make Tesla give the option to put the light indicators again.

@@martinlisbonmusic2506 I'm not sure how familiar you are with rain or rather water repellents, but they are a great solution in this case. It makes the lack of a rear wiper much less necessary, as the wind will blow almost all the water off thanks to the very slanted roof. I personally use RainX on all my vehicles for this reason.

There are very few sedans that have rear wheel steering and way fewer (if any) at a sub 40k (usd) price point. I don’t find rear wheel steering to be necessary for a sedan anyway as they are already quite maneuverable compared to an suv or pickup. Otherwise I agree that this is a modern well built car.

Unless you are talking about head up display. If you care so much about over the speed limit , just set speed limit warning.

Great review! Agree 100% about your feedback regarding a HUD. I would only posit that with the transition away from stocks Tesla intends to turn to steer-by-wire with variable ratio steering in all future models, which makes the transition from stocks much more natural because of the associated small lock to lock angle with the steering wheel. Obviously it's more of a problem without the steer-by-wire.

Not at all a no brainer, just a choice worth considering. When you notice the noise at highway speed compared to other cars in that price range (Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, BMW iX1, Kia EV6) and the really bad seats for a tall person, not to mention the indicator and gear selecter choices, it doesn't seem a no brainer anymore. Good car, depends what you're looking for and what you like.

@@Bogdan27911 For me this is also an investment. Hyundai, BMW, Kia EV technology is already 10 years outdated compared to Tesla Highland, and yet their prices are higher! I would feel like buying a rundown apartment for more than a brand new villa! I rarely drive cars, so this will be first time getting properly used to a car, I don't mind if it's different than all others. The downsides you present are all related to comfort (or how spoiled or used to something else you are). Entirely superficial. For me it's a no brainer. But you can do whatever you want with your money, of course ;-)

@@Bogdan27911 I've always purchased cars around the price range of the Model 3 Long Range. And for the price, they offer the most features, and comfort from equivalent competition. I currently don't own the Model 3 Highland, but I do plan on purchasing it later this year, once my lease on my current car (2021 Acura) ends. Compared to my current car, it offers more features, and equivalent or slightly more comfort. As the other person already mentioned, what you value in the car is completely subjective, and you may put higher priority on certain aspects more than others. And what you are used to also plays a role in your final decision, of course. For me, personally, this car is a big upgrade from my current car, and nothing else in the market in the same segment and price comes close.

Hi, Thank you for watching. This is a screenshot from the Swiss Tesla website but the battery capacity was added by the editing team, so was the top speed. 61 kWh is gross capacity (approx.), available usable capacity is approx. 58 kWh. Tesla does not give you the number but you can calculate it by triangulating SoC and added kW when charging.

On your display if you put a long range travel above 1000 KM from Wien to let´s say Koln does it shows where all the chargers are or I will need a separate app for it? What about the western side of Europe for example from Wien to Budapest or Bucharest ? As well from your experience did it happened to arrive at a charger and see it missing or broken compared to the display on the map (if existed) ? Thanks. LG Gigi

Hey, thx a lot for the nice review! When I saw the first driving shot, I was like "that's Zug!" and then I realized that you filmed the talking part at the lake 😁 So I have a maybe weird question. I guess you bought the Model 3 in Switzerland, so does it also have the speed warning, when you are driving 2kmh over the speed limit like in the EU cars? Or is there a way to permanently turn it off with the models bought in Switzerland? Since both come from Shanghai I unfortunately expect it to be the same.

Hi, yes, I live in wonderful Zug! This car was a loaner from Tesla Switzerland (I am also an accredited journalist). Anyway, yes, the Highland has the new speed warning system and you have to de-activate the sound every time you drive (goddamn EU....), but no big deal as there is an icon on the screen you just touch once. It cannot be permanently disconnected.

@morten_hannesbo
@morten_hannesbo 6 ай бұрын
I was really impressed with the rwd, even in CH there is little won by buying the dual motor awd version. You'd get a larger battery and some more range but for a huge additional cost. The Model Y is the hatchback you should consider, or wait until the new Model 2 comes out. Many markets in Asia, Americas and Southern Europe prefer a sedan, hence Tesla will keep making it. The trunk is pretty big, though, and the rear seat back folds.

for tesla model 3 highland Do you know what car speed limit (for example like 80, 100 km/hour etc.) for Automatic Emergency Brekanig working ?
@morten_hannesbo
@morten_hannesbo 6 ай бұрын
Hi, it works between 5-200 km/h. Automatic Emergency Braking does not apply the brakes, or stops applying the brakes, when: You turn the steering wheel sharply. You press and release the brake pedal while Automatic Emergency Braking is applying the brakes. You accelerate hard while Automatic Emergency Braking is applying the brakes. The vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, or pedestrian is no longer detected ahead. Automatic Emergency Braking is always enabled when you start Model 3. To disable for your current drive, shift into Park and touch Controls > Autopilot > Automatic Emergency Braking.

Thanks for sharing your real world test results for the highland version. I agree with you about the indicator stalk. The buttons on the steering wheel will be awkward for signalling an exit from a roundabout. Can a turn signal be activated by voice command? If not, perhaps a software upgrade could provide a solution. Likewise, it would help if the software could give the driver an option to activate turn signals based on the destination entered into the route planner.

I imagine at some point the software solution will be a better option. As an example, imagine coming up to a roundabout and the navigation automatically uses the turn signal to enter and exit the roundabout. I just hope that when and if it is implemented that they don't restrict its use to FSD only.

@morten_hannesbo

Thanks Steve Martin. Good question, because it is difficult to see when you are a driver! I tested it, and I can tell you that it is a yes and a no. If regenerative braking is aggressively slowing (such as when your foot is completely off the accelerator pedal at highway speeds), then the brake lights turn on to alert others that you are slowing down. If you just use regenerative braking slightly it will not come on. PS Congrats on your son's purchase.

Good review. Your English sounds like you are Danish, like me. Are you planning to also review the BYD Seal RWD. Here in Denmark it is the clear competitor to the model 3 RWD. It is currently a little more expensive, but not if you go for the 19" wheels on the Tesla. But BYD sells the Seal almost 10000 Euro cheaper in Australia and even includes the HUD, real leather and V2L adapter with this model, which they dont do in Europe. In Australia they even sells an entry level version with a 60kw battery for around 30000 Euro. This model has a weaker motor, artificial leather and 18" wheels like the Tesla, and no HUD, much like the European version.

We do not have BYD here in Switzerland yet - but I look forward to testing out the Seal. BYD is the manufacturer to watch and the most likely manufacturer to challenge Tesla for leadership in EV sales. The BYD Seal should be fine, just make sure to lease it ilo of buying it because the residual values may be poor. The efficiency/range of the Tesla should be better, though.

It would be interesting to see wall power consumption via your charging app details, as Tesla’s trip computer doesn’t include climate while parked, preconditioning, phantom use while parked, sentry mode, and so on. Other cars may calculate things differently so going with the actual electricity charged into the battery provides more of an apples to apples comparison.

Hi, thx for watching. The car was a press vehicle from Tesla - so I cannot show the data. I do test all cars the same way though, i.e. run it as my daily driver and use it the way 99% of owners do. What I can say is that the Tesla M3 is exceptionally efficient and the heating uses very little energy because of the good insulation of the car, including double glazed windows.

We ordered Tesla model 3 Highland, and main reason for that is that i like what Tesla did ,is improving the Car significantly in comparison with previous one,and price stayed the same. It’s something that many Car manufacturers would not do. Head up display is something is really missing on every Tesla Car. I mean Electric Car is so cost friendly in day life, from Insurance to charging costs,inspection etc ( there is information that’s probably true about tiers that they don’t last long,something like 2 years, and if so it’s still ok for me,i can live with spending 800€ for new tires every 2 years) in comparison with petrol/engine car. Of course for somebody that drives long track very often is not best option,but form many people yes. In my case ,if we take vacation,its flying somewhere to 90% of the time. To be fair, from where i live , 800km range/radius (meaning start from home fully charged,and having one stop to charge on the way) it’s more then enough for us to take family trip.

Thank you for this important question. No, it is still not that easy and intuitive, but it does open. You lift the plastic cover off and pull the cable, and you need to know this. Anyway, it is likely never to happen, but worth improving. The front doors have a lever.
