Repair job on a late 1800s CL Guinand (of the Guinand Frères company in Les Brenets), an 18 sized Swiss made Antique Pocket Watch. The watch was purchased on auction and doesn't work.
The balance wheel was missing screws and the hairspring was out of shape. The movement was overall very dirty and likely hasn't been serviced in a century. The crystal was also shattered and needed replacement.
The Guinand Frères company was founded in 1865 in Switzerland by brothers Julien-Alcide and Charles Leon. They operated in a town situated on the border of France, close to many other French watchmakers who settled in this area during the French Revolution.
I am an amateur who enjoys restoring vintage watches to working order. Constructive critiques of the process are welcome. I am always learning.

You just helped me figure out what is missing on my Grade 27 Elgin which I had apart last week. As you were taking this watch apart I spotted you removing the over-wind protection star. When I opened my watch the winding index was in place but there was nothing on the post beside it. I had no idea what was missing and just hoped it wasn't something important. It is back together now but if I come across a star at some point I will know to save it for my watch. Thanks. Love your videos.

I’m glad I could be of some help! I later learned that this mechanism does more than protect from overwinding. It’s called the Geneva Stop-Work and this video goes into detail how it functions: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/op2TrKua2rG7pY0.htmlsi=yALPddsP7Xo21pd7

Some of the older Swiss watches you’ve worked on had very refined and elegant movements. This is the second one I’ve noticed that seems to be shall we say somewhat unrefined. Is it just the difference in quality or price when new. Just curious.

What a beauty! It is not clear how they could have made such small screws 200 years ago? And why didn't they add a repeater? A watch would be more attractive.

What's the curly bit on the end of the pallet fork do? Some sort of counter weight perhaps? I guess it's only in very old pocket watches that you see these "sideways" pallet forks. In more modern stuff, they are all pretty much the same part.

The winding arbor is supposed to be unscrewed into two pieces . Another possibility is that the two pieces are held together by a pin. Either way I would leave it as it is and try to clean it as best as I could. In most cases it is nearly impossible to separate the Arbor. And another thing, I noticed that you polished the casing of the watch. In your place I would not do it and I would just clean the case in ultra sonic. In that way, the patterns of the case are preserved and the case is clean. Other than that, nice job. 😀

I did one of these watches a few months ago and I believe that is a Geneva Stopworks feature, not an overwind protection star. But I suppose it could help prevent overwinding the watch. The way I installed it was to count how many turns till a full wind and set it so the springs stays at a more consistent torque curve for better time keeping. Unless I'm wrong and have no idea what I'm talking about lol
@csspinner
@csspinner Жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right, Tim. I have since learned it restricts the wind to about 4 out of the 6 turns (effectively eliminating the first and last winds )

I have spend a bit of time trying to look up any reference to the protection star. Nothing found. I am guessing they fell out of use fairly quickly and mine, being missing shouldn't cause a problem. I did leave the winding index in place. Should it come out when the star isn't there?

A prata fica perfeitamente limpa.

I think that berral gear is pres fit on the arbor shaft. Probably frozen on there from 200 years of being in place! Pocket watch parts are so large compared to wrist watches. Look at the bridges on this thing! Each one does one thing and they are easily 3X larger than a similar part on a wrist watch that has 3 jewels and holds several things.

How much would a watch like this be worth? I Bought 1 a couple of months ago at a flea market. The signature is similar, but not the same, and though the number is stamped inside the outer "flap" and also inside the inner "flap". (8280) The movement is VERY, close to being the same, I'm 99% sure, that at least one of "my" hands is not original. It runs, but need a service. (10 min off a days) But I won't take it to any jeweler.
